Introduction
Throughout my internship programme, I got myself introduced with different real life
working situation which helped me in various ways. The practical use of the academic
6
knowledge was visible in front of my eyes. It would be wrong if I say that, I have seen all the
academic knowledge is used in real life banking.
From the very early age, I have seen how a banker lives his life, how hard they work, how
dedicated they are at their job; as my father is Banker and slowly I started to understand how
well connected and how they can manipulate our countrys economy as well as world
economy. Connections with all sorts of people from home and abroad made me more
interested about working at a Bank. As a developing country, in Bangladesh there are lot of
responsibility that a Bank/ Financial institution have like; Financing garments, industries,
bid projects, import-export letter of credit, creating employment, providing personal and
business loan, providing safety of cash, different types of schemes and deposits and so on. In
addition to that, transfer of money from domestic to international, all are dependent to
Commercial Banks now-a-days. So being acknowledged about such vast sector was one of
my desires. Following such desire I conducted my internship under Southeast bank Limited
Bashundhara Branch.
The Southeast Bank was established by leading business personalities and eminent
industrialists of the country with stakes in various segments of the national economy. They

Cash Department
Cash section is the section where customers deposits and withdraws cash for any justifiable
instrument. In cash section, there have three cash counter, line-1 cash receive for account
holder and IPO share, line-2 cheque clearance line & line-3 for bill collection line. In the
opening time of the day first assistant manager comes in the morning at 9:45 am and opens
the cash bold. After the calculation of current cash amount in the vault the cash in charge of
the branch distributes a small amount of changes to all the three counters for the purpose of
customer needs.
When a counter receives a cheque from a customer the officer has to cheque the date,
signature and account number. If everything is written properly, the officer logs into the
software to cheque the availability of the cash in the account. It the specific account does not
have sufficient cash, the cheque will be bounced. In addition with that, if the amount is larger
than BDT 500000 /- ; the officer has to inform the General Banking in charge to confirm the
cheque by calling up the account holder and confirm the cash payment.
SEBL Bashundhara br. also other services like issuance of IPO shares, North South
University Admission form sell, Admission fee collection, selling of prize bonds etc. While I
was working as an intern in the branch, I came across IFAD Auto and SASHA Demin IPO
shares. Cash counters have four types of record book. Price bond, registry book, cash
withdraw and leaguer book.
Form my experience it seemed, cash department has the most interactions with the customers
and Cashiers behaviour; concentration and patience are the most curtail parts.
customer. National ID card/ Passport/ Birth certificate, photo, income source, nominee
information, permanent and current address are needed for account opening.
SEBL provide two types of interest system. One is general 5-12% interest rate and other is
soriya vittik interest. But generally in Bangladesh people are most common preferred general
interest rate system. Fixed deposit and DPS has different interest rates for different years.
Bank makes file for different account holder and put separate serial numbers differs form
branch to branch. It is necessary for the bank to protect all information for account holder.
Loan Section
Loan is necessary for both business and sometimes personal life. There are Home loan, car
loan, marriage loan, and study loan, medical and business loan etc. Bank follows step by step
process to grant a loan. If a customer wants to get a loan, he/ she have to follow the following
procedures. .
First go to bank and submitted the paper which against you get loan.
Second, the Bank contacts with main branch for loan clearance and submit those paper copy.
Third, main branch gives a feedback and what other papers needed and confirm that those
papers are legal or not.
Fourth, Bank checks and justifies all papers are right or wrong.
Fifth, Bank gives a confirmation paper and attaches some rules and regulations about the
loan.
If consumer agrees with the bank, then bank tells him/her to open a bank account in their
branch. At last bank confirm loan against different rules and regulation and after that the
customer can withdraw the money.
The loan portfolio of the Bank is spread over the business of different sectors like readymade
garments, textile, spinning, dyeing, ceramics, pharmaceuticals, telecommunication,
petroleum, steel and engineering, ship scrapping, cement, edible oil, sugar industry, real
16
estate, transport, agriculture and other commercial lending etc. which ensures diversification
without concentration to limited sectors. The Bank also thrives on reducing risk at the time of
borrower selection through due diligence on government policy, industry outlook, borrowers
business performance along with mitigation of unforeseeable risk by taking adequate
collateral.
SME Banking
The Bank, in line with the policy guidelines of Bangladesh Bank, has strengthened its SME
operation, through introduction of 10 (ten) SME Service Centres all over the country during
the year 2009. Policy for financing in the SME Sector has also been devised and
implemented. The credit proposals from the branches helped the Bank to experience a growth
of 25.76% in this sector.
Bank provides credit facilities to the small and medium entrepreneurs to be more productive

Personal Development
My first exposure to professional life through internship has benefited me mostly in
strengthening my personal skills. I have developed positive attitudes, strong sense of
responsibility, and being innovative, resourceful, open and responsive to change. It has
created in me an interest in lifelong learning.
Multitasking: When doing one task such as uploading data with full concentration I
often had to deal with several commands from my superiors like photocopying or
scanning some necessary documents or to assist someone with his/her task. There is
no chance of saying NO to anything in the corporate world as my supervisor said so
I learned to stay updated about all type of official affairs so that I could help anyone
and everyone.
Time management skills: I got the opportunity to enhance my time management
skills. I often had to work under pressure within a given timeframe. Learning time
management was quite effective in knowing how to prioritize activities and to
distinguish between the more important ones from the less important ones.
Professionalism: I had to maintain a strict time schedule which taught me adjust
myself to the corporate world and act in a more professional manner.
Patience: This is the biggest learning that I have managed to develop gradually.
While working at the Southeast Bank I was able to differentiate between the more
important tasks from the less important ones and was able to improve my patience. I
came to learn to think calmly and composedly of any problem in the way and then a

Difficulties I faced:
Though I was very much familiar with banking environment, but still there were some
difficulties I have faced during mu Internship Program.
First of all, all of the employees were busy with their work and my supervisor had
very less time to talk with me. I was very luck that one of my NSU friends was also
working as intern at the Branch. He introduced me to all of the other officers and after
that I felt better.
Secondly, it was very hard to gain the officers trust. If they did not trust me, they
would not have given me any task to do. Then the whole 12 weeks internship program
would have been passed by just sitting alone in the corner.
Thirdly, all the officers were 10 to 15 years older than me. So they had different
opinion and suggestions which seemed unrealistic or in some cases naive in my
prospective. But slowly as days passed I was able to understand their ways of
thinking and modify my perception also.
Fourthly, while working in the cash section, it was very hard for me to keep my
patience. Because the audit trial report was very complicated and there was always
presence of crowd in the counters. Moreover, I had hardly any time to leave my seat.
But after few days I was able to cope up with customer behaviour and work load.
Last of all, in the beginning of my internship I had almost nothing to do in the office.
Sitting in the office and to do nothing is the most annoying thing. In addition to that,
there were eight Intern in the Branch and it was sometimes really hard to find any
work or a seat. That is why I tried always to get something to do. I went from desk to
desk and asked if any of the officers need any helping hand. After few days, I was
able to gain the officers trust and sometimes I was called by 2/3 officers at a time to
do their task.
Despite of all these difficulties, what kept me going were my goals and aspirations of
building my future career in the banking sector. I knew this internship was a suitable
platform for me to reshape my dreams and make them come true so I concentrated on my
job with sincerity.
co-workers. But gradually as time passed and I got to know my tasks and the people around
me, it automatically helped me to fit in.
Besides working with different officers and with different departments I got to know the
works of a bank more closely.
Now after my 3 months internship program at Southeast Bank; I definitely know that I am
going to work for a bank or any other financial organization and for that I thank all my coworkers and my supervisor because they helped me to know my abilities and my boundaries
and also influenced me to go for a banking career.
I have fixed my mind set to be a bank manager and to achieve that I will give my most. The
utmost respect, care, value, control, influence, responsibility and power of the manager
attract me more than anything. With the help of Almighty Allah, I will pursue my career in
Banking Sector.
Conclusion:
Lastly, I would like to say that my experience working inside a bank simply changed my life.
I had some good and some bad experiences but the most important thing that I learnt about
myself is that I am capable of working on any circumstances that I am put into and I can
come out with good results. That is what a program like internship does. It helps you to rediscover yourself and helps you to take decision on your career plans. Internships are not
going to be easy and internship in a bank will definitely be full of difficulties. Assignments
that you will be given in a bank will be tough to accomplish unless you give your 100%. But
the positive side of doing internship in a bank is that a bank builds you strong by mind and
ethically as it pushes you to situations where you have to be ethical and honest and also
pushes you to situations to see whether you endeavour your mind into work or not. These
situations may be tough to deal but once you learn to deal these situations you are ready to
enter into the job market.
