The Professor
The first round of the Chatham Cup is coming up next week. Were away to Wainuiomata in what
local pundit, Dale Warburton (of Yellow Fever), is describing as the Double Brown Derby. One
former Vic player suggested the team stop off at KFC on the way to the game to make it a Double
Down Double Brown Derby.
Anyhoo, with the delight of knockout football returning, what better way to start than by looking
back at a match report found in the archives of Salient magazine (when they actually reported on
stuff), summarising a close run match between Vic , then a lowly urban club, playing Central
League powerhouse Western Suburbs.
P.S. Apologies for the continual references to Soccer throughout this articlethat was how they
talked in the 1960s.

VIC'S SOCCER JOLT FOR SUBURBS
Vic's recent effort of almost putting Western Suburbs out of this year's Chatham Cup must rate as
one of the best-ever performances by a university
soccer side.
Unbeaten
At the time Western Suburbs were unbeaten in
the Central League Competition and were expected to have a comfortable match against Varsity, who do not play Central League and are not
high up in the Wellington competition.
But from the whistle Vic showed they were not
overawed by the opposition and settled down to
play intelligent football against a team who had
obviously underrated their opponents.

After 120 minutes of football the final score was 3

-1 to Western Suburbs.
Brilliant
Varsity 'keeper Rod Bustard was hero of the
match. He played brilliantly and repeatedly
stopped certain goals.
It is hoped that with this brilliant display he will
receive some of the recognition due to him for
several seasons.
The rest of the team all played well and they can
be satisfied that their performance caused one of
the biggest stirs in Chatham Cup football for
many seasons.

Shock
The first shock came when Chris Ryan nodded a
magnificent header past the Suburbs 'keeper.

The Suburbs' forwards were having difficulty finishing off and, in an effort to inject some fire into
the attack, player/coach Imre Kiss, recovering
from a leg injury, returned for the second half.
Wilted
During this half Vic continued to play stirring
football, repulsing attack after attack. Finally,
with only 10 minutes play remaining, Dave Wallace netted for Suburbs. The game ended at oneall.
But the varsity side wilted a little in extra time
and allowed Suburbs to score two more goals.

In 1968 Western Suburbs went on to win the first

ever Central League title, and won it again in 1969.
These feats saw them be an inaugural member of
the National League that started in 1970, and finished runners-up in the Chatham Cup.
All of that success pails in comparison to the scare
they received at the hands of Victoria...

the Olympic area but was bundled over in the process
of shooting.
Olympic threatened with a free-kick soon after the
break before University regained the ascendancy. Ninness attempted an early strike that went over the bar,
Wouts miscontrolled in space on the edge of the Olympic area after being fed by Ninness, and a Ninness free
-kick from the right was headed over at the far post by
McLean.
Staples did well to stomp out an Olympic left-wing
attack but was then grateful to Walker as he instantly
returned possession, Wouts was just beaten to the ball
by the Olympic keeper on a promising break, and a
Lahood cross was just taken away from Staples arriving on the far post.
Garnett and Lahood combined to set up Ninness for
a strike that was saved around the right-hand upright
and the resulting Lahood corner found its way to Davies who was stymied in his efforts to create a shooting opportunity in tight space.
Davies then slid to block out an Olympic cross at
the other end of the park and from the resulting corner
a shot rained over the University bar, Wouts was freed
into a one-on-one but shot just right of target, and
Walker needed to be quick to clear an Olympic attack.
Lahood shot just past the right-hand upright,
McLean attempted to keep his close-range shot down
but the ball reared up and struck the bar, Garnett delivered a threatening free-kick from the left which just
evaded arriving team-mates before University made it
4-0 on 68 minutes. Staples steadied on approach to
the right-hand corner of the area before curling an
early ball for Lahood to finish at the far post.
Olympic put in a threatening cross from the left
which went right through a crowded University box
and then put a header wide at the far post, before University threatened again through a Lahood corner and
soon after completed the scoring on 75 minutes. Having been upended in the Olympic area, Wouts stepped
up to make it 5-0 from the penalty spot.
The home side made a late rally with balls into the
University area being cleared by Stenner Corbishley
(twice) as well as substitutes Matt Ryan and Dave
Hudson, before Ninness struck a long free-kick on the
Olympic goal.
Walker saved as Olympic broke into the right side
of the box and soon after a shot went over the University bar, before at the other end of the park Ninness
was thwarted in a one-on-one after being played in by
Lloyd with the ball being quickly returned by Wouts
but Ninness then being blocked out in the six-yard area.
Striving for his hatrick, Ninness appeared to slip on
the ball after being played into a promising position by
Wouts, Davies repelled an Olympic attack, Wouts shot
wide after being played in by Garnett and the game
drew to a close with Davies setting up Hudson for a
strike.

Victoria University resoundingly rebounded from last

weeks first defeat of the league season to Island Bay
United by progressively netting five goals and keeping
a clean sheet away to Wellington Olympic Reserves.
University enjoyed most of the early possession
with the first close attempt coming when centralmidfielder Miles Lloyd delivered from the right but leftmidfielder Michael Lahood could only connect with his
shoulder under pressure and the Olympic keeper gathered.
Olympic then asked questions, with University
keeper Matt Walker dealing well with a right-wing
through-ball, two other attacks threatening and a shot
going over the University crossbar from a left-wing
move.
A quick turn on about halfway from University
striker Seb Ninness released right-midfielder Ben
McLean who earned a corner and Lahood followed up
with a threatening place-kick.
University central-defender Sam McLaughlin stymied an Olympic left-wing break with a timely outstretched leg, the visitors came close to breaking the
Olympic line with repeated through balls, before the
home side launched a promising right-wing attack
which led to a corner that central-defender Si Davies
headed clear.
Seizing on a header back into the Olympic box by
Lloyd, University striker Yannik Wouts struck the bar
on the turn, before the visitors opened the scoring on
25 minutes. Aided by Wouts movement, Ninness beat
an opponent and advanced into the left side of the
Olympic penalty area before passing the ball around
the keeper and into the far corner.
As the game heated up in tempo and aggression,
Walker gathered a cross from the right, University leftback Finn Stenner Corbishley shot on target from distance, Walker was drawn outside his area but the University defence covered, and then Stenner Corbishley
and Davies cleared their lines.
A throw-in from Universitys left wing was worked
across the park to present right-back Andrew Staples
with a shooting opportunity, Lloyd shot wide after build
up play from Wouts and McLean, and then Ninness
was denied by an outstretched boot in a one-on-one
with the Olympic keeper.
Arriving on a cut-back from Wouts, Ninness drew
another firm save, Olympic threatened at the other
end of the park through a free-kick that ultimately
found its way to Walker, before University extended its
lead on 42 minutes. A quickly-taken free-kick on the
left side of halfway by University central-midfielder
Mike Garnett found Staples whose drilled ball in behind
the retreating defence was tapped home by Ninness.
Stenner Corbishley and Lahood were called into
action to partially clear a right-wing Olympic free-kick
with Walker ultimately cleaning up, before University

praise from our supporters on the sideline -- and also
for his personal courage. Despite not having the great-

est day in front of goal, he showed unblemished confidence and commitment to continue taking on chances
right through to the final whistle -- a fantastic example
mate.

four. This weekend also sees the first intra-club derby of the season as the Uni Cycles and Unicorns meet
each other. In the womens grades, the Firsts visit league leaders Petone, out at Petone Memorial on Sunday for a vital clash to set the scene for the rest of the season.
