4. Each NP in the following sentences has a thematic role that represents the part that its
referent plays in the situation described by the sentence. Using the terms described in
class, label the thematic role of each NP in these sentences and identify the assigner for
each thematic role.
Example: Bill

drove that bus from Indianapolis to Terre Haute.

6. Do exercise #18 on page 184 in your textbook.
a. This example is similar to the example Can you pass the salt? in the textbook. In
this case, asking someone what cookie crumbs are doing, if answered literally, would
force the respondent into stating the obvious, which is exactly what the child is in this
dialogue does, in violation of the maxim of quantity, though humorous.
(The maxims of quality & manner are also violated in certain degree.)
b. In this example, the maxim of relevance is key. When the woman says If cats ruled
the world, everyone would sleep on a pile of fresh laundry, she is presupposing that
cats do not rule the world. This, however, surprises the cat, who then questions her
presupposition. The presupposition was probably not surprising to the reader/listener,
so the cat pointing it out is humorous. (The maxim of manner is also violated.)
7. Do exercise #21 (just b, e, g, i, and j) on page 186 in your textbook.
b. Valerie did not receive a new T-bird for Labor day.
e. The World Trade Center was attacked on September 11, 2011.
f. Disa has had some popcorn already.
i. Somebody discovered Pluto in 1930.
j. Mary found a cockroach in her bed.
Hurray! This is your LAST homework!
