COURSECONTENT

Theobjectiveofthiscourseistointroducethebasicstatisticalconceptsandtechniquesto
thefirstyearbusinessstudents.Thecourseaimstohelpstudentsunderstandthevalueof
Statistics in acquiring knowledge and making decisions in business practice, develop
students criticalandthoughtful thinking skills, and equip students the ability to apply
statistical analysis to business issues. The topics include descriptive statistics, probability,
estimation,andhypothesistesting.

FINALEXAMINATION
The exam is closed notes and books. It is a comprehensive test, which covers all topics
taught in this course. It will be 2 hours long. The date and time will be announced by the
examinationsectionoftheuniversityinalaterdate.Noindividualmakeupexaminationwill
beofferedinthiscourse.

MIDTERMEXAMINATION

Themidtermexamwillbe2hourslongandwillbeheldonNov1(Thur),6:30pm8:30pm.
ThevenueisYIALT1.Itisclosednotesandbooksandthiswrittentestwillbecomprisedof
multiplechoices,shortanswerquestions,andnumericalproblems.

CLASSPARTICIPATION

PleasenotethatPARTICIPATIONisnotequalATTENDENCE.Youarerequiredtoactively
engagedindiscussions,raisingquestionsandprovidingfeedback.Youwillobtainmarksin
participationbyaskingpertinentquestionsorbyrespondingtoquestionsduringclass.You
willloseparticipationmarksbyconstantlytalkinginclassormissingasignificantportionof
theclass.

Youarerequiredtosubmitassignedhomeworkatthetimeannouncedintheclasswebsite.

Aftercompletingthiscourse,studentsshouldbeableto:

(2) useofpropertiesofprobabilitydistributionstomakecomputations,
(3) masterthemechanicofestimationandhypothesistesting,
(4)applystatisticsanalysistosolvetheproblemandtomakeproperdecisioninbusiness
problems,
(5)usingcomputerprogram(excel)tohelpconductingstatisticalanalysis.

CLASSROOMCONDUCT

Mobilephonesandpagersmustbeswitchedoff,andnoeatingordrinkingisallowedduring
class.Talkingwithnearbyclassmateswilldistracttheclassandisprohibated.
