TITLE
Flash point of petroleum products(diesel).
OBJECTIVES:
1. To find the flash point of petroleum products
2. To compare the actual flash point with expected flash point
INTRODUCTION
The flash point of a flammable liquid is the lowest temperature at which it can
form an ignitable mixture in air. At this temperature the vapor may cease to burn when
the source of ignition is removed.
A slightly higher temperature, the fire point, is defined as the temperature at
which the vapor continues to burn after being ignited. Neither of these parameters is
related to the temperatures of the ignition source or of the burning liquid, which are much
higher. The flash point is often used as one descriptive characteristic of liquid fuel, but it
is also used to describe liquids that are not used intentionally as fuels.
Every flammable liquid has a vapor pressure, which is a function of that liquid's
temperature. As the temperature increases, the vapor pressure increases. As the vapor
pressure increases, the concentration of evaporated flammable liquid in the air increases.
Hence, temperature determines the concentration of evaporated flammable liquid
in the air under equilibrium conditions. Different flammable liquids require different
concentrations in air to sustain combustion. The flash point is that minimum temperature
at which there is a sufficient concentration of evaporated fuel in the air for combustion to
propagate after an ignition source has been introduced. Flash point is basically the lowest
temperature at which there is enough fuel vapor to ignite.

Types of material
Diesel
DISCUSSION
In the experiment, the set expected flash point (EFP) was 51.67oC. In the previous
experiment, the material was used in this experiment was diesel. The flash point of
petroleum product very important in combustion engine. Diesel is designed for use in a
high-compression engine. Air is compressed until it has been heated above the auto
ignition temperature of diesel, then the fuel is injected as a high-pressure spray, keeping
the fuel-air mix within the flammable limits of diesel. There is no ignition source.
Therefore, diesel is required to have a high flash point and a low auto ignition
temperature. The alarm sound will be detected when the EFP was very high value. During
the experiment, the banner must be closed because to avoid big fire when the alarm sound
detected. When the alarm sound detected, suddenly the equipment has the fire point and
the experiment must has stopped immediately. The flash point value of diesel in MSDS
was 37 oC
CONCLUSION
The conclusion of this experiment was to archive the flash point of diesel that is
37 oC and to compare the actual flash point with expected flash point. The difference
between actual flash point and expected flash point are quite big. The value was 51.67 oC
- 37 oC = 14.67 oC .The experiment was success and have reached the objectives.
TUTORIAL
1-What are the expected flash point for diesel?
51.67oC
2-What are the actual flash point of diesel?
37 oC
3-Is there are any difference between expected and actual flash point? Discuss
Yes.because there are present of potentially dangerous volatile contaminants
4-What are the important of flash point to petroleum product?
It is important to know the flash point of petroleum product because we want to know
the suitable temperature to store it to prevent from burn.
5-Suppose you have a sample of unknown oil at flash point 40 oC.What could the material
be?
Gasoline
