Order of Operations Day Two

1. Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these
symbols.
5.OA.A.2 Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without
evaluating them. For example, express the calculation add 8 and 7, then multiply by 2 as 2 (8 + 7).
Recognize that 3 (18932 + 921) is three times as large as 18932 + 921, without having to calculate the
indicated sum or product.

This is the students second day learning about the Order of Operations
and how to apply it to an expression. In order to successfully reach the
objective, the students will be have to be able to apply what they learned
in guided practice into their independent practice.
Students have background knowledge of multi-digit addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division. However not all students are 100% fluent with
their basic multiplication facts.
Content
This is the students second lesson about the mathematical rules of the order of operations using Please
Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally to explain the concepts. Students have learned and some have memorized the
rules and solved expressions using the operations.

Lesson Objective
The student will be able to apply their knowledge of the Order of Operation in order to evaluate and solve
mathematical expressions.

How will you teach the content?


T will tell the students to take out their math notebook and a pencil.
Before beginning the lesson, T will ensure that all students are seated and that positive behaviors are being
displayed and that expectations for behavior are stated.
T will introduce the lesson by telling that they will be once again learning about The Order of Operations
T will ask the students to say what they know and remember about The Order of Operations.
T will display the Smart Notebook lesson created for the lesson.
T will go through the Smart Notebook lesson and read the various slides that will help re-introduce the
phrase Please Excuse my Dear Aunt Sally.
T will ask questions that will be evident on the Smart Notebook lesson.
Students will read and or answer the various expressions presented in the lesson.
The use of Accountable Talk will be emphasized.
At one point in the lesson, students will work in pairs to complete a chart that will be displayed on the
SmartBoard.
Students will continue to work on solving expressions independently but will be asked to discuss their
strategy with a partner.
T will circulate the room to ensure that all students are participating by attempting to solve the equation on
paper.
The students may watch a song/video from Scholastic Study Jams that was linked into the Smart Notebook
lesson.
T will ask students, What are the two ways remember the Order of Operations?
o Students will respond PEMDAS and Please Excuse my Dear Aunt Sally
T will ask students, What does each first letter in Please Excuse my Dear Aunt Sally stand for?
T will tell the students that they will continue to practice the Order of Operations.
T will give each student the Whack a Mole assessment with ten questions. The students will answer the
questions.
The teacher will collect and assess the Whack a Mole assessment sheet to see how students did.
Teacher will introduce and open up the Whack a Mole game in Smart Notebook.
The students will go play the Whack a Mole game on the Smart Board. This game includes the same
questions.

Math in Focus Grade 5 textbook (resource, if necessary)
Student math notebook or lined paper Students will solve equations through guided and independent

Whack a Mole assessment Used with game and as a form of individual assessment

Evaluation Strategies
I will be assessing student performance throughout the lesson. The students will answer questions as they are
displayed on the SmartBoard. At the end of the lesson I will also be giving each student a sheet with 10 Order
of Operations questions. These questions are aligned with the Whack a Mole game. Each student will
complete this sheet individually. This assessment will be completed and handed in before the game is played.
