BASED 0N EQUILIBRIUM OF BODY ON INCLINED PLANE


1. A body of a weight 450 N is pulled up along an inclined plane with 30 inclination to the
horizontal at a steady speed. If the coefficient of friction between the body and the plane is
0.25 and force is applied parallel to the inclined plane, find the force required. Find also, the
work done on the body, If the distance travelled A by the body is 10m along the plane.(A.U

2. An effort 0f 1200 N is required just to move a certain body up an inclined plane angle 12
the force acting parallel to plane. If the angle of inclination of the plane is increased to 15 ,
then the effort required is 1400 N. find the weight of the body and coefficient of friction.

BASED PROBLEM ON FRICTION OF SCREW AND NUT
4.A square threaded bolt of root diameter 22.5 mm and pitch 5 mm is tightened by screwing
nut whose mean diameter of bearing surface is 50 mm. if coefficient of friction for nut and
bolt is 0.1 and for nut and bearing surface is 0.16, find the force required at the end of a

5.A vertical screw with a single start square thread 50 mm mean diameter and 10 mm pitch is
raised against the load of 5500 N by means of hand wheel , a boss of which is threaded to act
as a nut. The axial load is taken up by a thrust collar which support the wheel boss and has a
mean diameter of 65mm. If the coefficient of friction is 0.15 for the screw and 0.18 for the
collar and tangential force applied by each hand to the wheel is 140 N, Find a suitable
diameter of the hand wheel.

If a force of 100 N is applied at the end of a lever to raise the load , what should be length of

13.A bolt is having v-threads. The pitch of a threads is 5mm and the v-angle is 55. The mean
diameter of a bolt is 20mm. The bolt is tightened by screwing a nut. The mean radius of
bearing surface the nut is 25mm. The load on the bold is 5000N. The coefficient of friction
for nut and bolt is 0.1 whereas for nut and bearing surface is 0.16. determine the force

mm and 200 mm respectively. The total axial load is 80 KN and the intensity of pressure is 350
KN/m . the shaft rotates at 400 rpm. Taking the coefficient of friction a 0.06, calculate the

23.The external and internal radii of a friction plate of a single clutch are 120 mm and
60mm respectively. The friction surface are held together with a total axial thrust of 1500N.
for, uniform wear, find the maximum, minimum and average, pressure on the contact

mass 1300 kg with an effective radius of gyration of 180 mm. the coefficient of friction for
the clutch is 0.35. the driving motor is brought up to a speed of 1250 rpm when the current
is switched off and the clutch suddenly engaged. Determine ;(i)the final speed of motor and
rotor.(ii) the time to reach this speed , and (iii). The kinetic energy lost during the period of

29).A multidisc clutch transmits 55 KW of power at 1800 rpm. Coefficient of friction for

radius is 80 mm and is 0.7 times the external radius. Find the number of plates needed to

30.A cone clutch to transmit 7.5KW at 900 rpm. The cone has face angle of 12.The width
of the face is half of the mean radius and the normal pressure between the contact face is
not to exceed 0.09 N/mm. assuming uniform wear and the coefficient of friction between
contact faces as 0.2, find the dimension of clutch and the axial force required to engage the

31). A pulley of diameter 700 mm is driven by a flat belt running at a speed os 300 rpm.
The coefficient of friction between the pulley and the belt is 0.3 and the angle of lap s 160.

apart. The belt has a mass of 1kg/m length and maximum tension in it is not exceed 1.5 KN.

pulleys, the velocity of the driven shafts is only 725 rpm. If =0 . 25 , find; (i) torque on
each of the two shafts, (ii) power transmitted, (iii) power lost in friction, and (iv) efficiency

38).An open belt running over two pulley of 0.15 m and 0.1 m diameters connects two

friction between the belt and pulley is 0.3. find (i) the exact length of the belt required, and

required to transmit the power if each belt has a cross sectional area of 375 mm, density

45).A band brake act on the of circumference of a drum of 450 mm diameter which is
keyed to the shaft. The band brake provides a braking torque of 225 N -m. one end of the
band is attached to a fulcrum pin of the lever and the other end to a pin 100 mm from the
fulcrum. If the operating force is applied at 500 mm from the fulcrum and coefficient of
friction is 0.25. find the operating force when the drum rotates in (i)anticlockwise and

225. Determine (I) the brake torque when the force of 150 N. applied at the lever end, (ii).
The number of turns of the flywheel before it comes to rest ,and (iii) the time taken by the
