During the
month of April

It is hard to believe that

we are halfway through
April. This year is flying
by. We will begin state
testing in the next couple
of weeks.
This spring South Carolina is introducing new
assessments to measure
academic performance
for students across the
state from the elementary grades through high
school. Three testsACT
Aspire, The ACT Plus
Writing, and ACT WorkKeyswill help students prepare for future
life success.
The assessments form a
connected system to

monitor the educational

progress of students from
grades 3 through 8 and
in grade 11. The tests are
developed by ACT, the
company best known for
The ACT, the nations
leading college entrance
exam.
On April 28th - 30th,
elementary students will
take the ACT Aspire test.
Students will be tested
on Writing and English
on the 28th; Reading on
the 29th; and, Math on
the 30th.
Our faculty has worked
very hard to be sure you
child is ready. It is very
important that you have

your child at school on

time and ready to test.
They should have a good
nights rest and a nutritious breakfast. Also,
please do not plan to
sign your children out
before noon on testing
days. Doctors appointments should not be
scheduled during testing
times.
Please note that no parent volunteers will be
allowed in the building
while the students are
testing. This includes all
grade levels.
I know our students will
do well!

PLAY IT SAFE
Playing sports is
one of the best
ways to keep kids
active, healthy
and happy. Being part of a
team and playing
sports can help build
self-esteem and social skills. Involvement in sports also
increases risk of
injury.
Learn what you
need to know to keep
your kids safe when playing sports:
Start any exercise or sport
activity with conditioning.
It is essential to warm up
and loosen those muscles
for about 10 minutes. Try
stretching while holding
each stretch for 20-30 seconds. Try jogging, jump-

ing jacks or anything that

brings the heart rate up
gradually.

medical emergency and make

sure that coaches and teachers
have your contact numbers.

Prevent overuse injury by

taking rest breaks. It is
important that
children take a
rest when involved in sports
activities. Have
your child take a
day or two off
each week from
sports to give them time to
rest.

Learn the signs and symptoms

of a concussion. Sometimes
they are hard to recognize
when they happen. When in
doubt, sit them out.

Make sure that you plan

ahead making sure that
your child is ready and has
everything they need for
their sport. Schedule yearly well check-ups or sports
physicals, have a safety
plan in place in case of

Make sure that all equipment

being used is safe and fitted
properly. Watch for wear and
tear and replace worn out
equipment before it causes
injury.

Stay hydrated. It is important

to drink plenty of water before, during and after activities. Dont wait until they are
thirsty, encourage water intake.

Be active, stay safe and have

fun!
