LEARNING COMMUNITY ASSISTANT POSITION DESCRIPTION


The Learning Community Assistant (LCA) position is a student leadership position that serves students in Loyolas
Learning Communities. This position is an opportunity for upperclass students to both share their knowledge
and love for Loyola with new students, and collaborate with invested students, faculty and staff to create a rich
experience for all Learning Community students. In their work, LCAs will serve as resources, community
builders, role models, and peer educators.
The LCA is a student staff member of the Department of Residence Life and reports directly to a Resident
Director and an administrative partner who serves the Learning Community. Some of the specific duties of the
position are as follows:
Plan co-curricular programs and activities (at least four per semester) based on the theme and learning
outcomes of the LC for all residents in the LC (both first- and second-year students)
Collaborate with administrative partners, LC students, faculty and staff members to further the goals
and theme of the LC
Develop academic support programs and initiatives for both first and second year students. Coordinate
regular study sessions for the common course each LC student is enrolled in
Facilitate an intentional program or initiative for second-year students in the LC to connect with and
mentor first-year students in the LC
Attend weekly meetings with supervisor(s), weekly staff meetings, and all training sessions directed by
the Department of Residence Life
Be available for students outside regularly scheduled meetings and act as a direct liaison to community
resources
Assist with move-in for the students living in the LC
Assist in the assessment strategy of LC programs through scheduled assessment programs as well as
informal conversations with LC students
Minimum Qualifications
Be a sophomore, junior, or senior during the 2014-2015 academic year
Be a full-time Loyola student in good academic standing with a minimum grade point average of 3.0
Be in good disciplinary standing
Be familiar with Loyolas resources and student services
Have a passion or an knowledge of the theme of the Learning Community
Uphold guidelines and responsibilities set forth by the Department of Residence Life
Possess exceptional leadership, communication and problem-solving skills; the ability to be flexible,
patient, and autonomous; a desire to work with students, faculty, and staff; an interest in program
planning, development, and evaluation; a service-driven attitude.
Strong preference will be given to students who have participated in a Learning Community or have
previously served as Learning Community Mentors or Resident Assistants
Time Commitments
Generally, the LCA position requires approximately 10-12 hours per week. The LCA should expect
that some weeks will require more, though some weeks will require less.

LCAs are expected to attend weekly staff meetings every Tuesday from 4:30pm 6:30pm.
LCAs are expected to attend all training sessions provided by the Department of Residence Life,
including the following:
o Spring Orientation - March 19 & 26, April 2 & 9 at 5:00pm
o Fall Training - August 1-20, 2014
o Winter Training - January 6-11, 2015
Remuneration
Single room located in the first-year residence hall associated with the assigned LC. This space will
be charged at the rate of a double room in that building.
Housing scholarship in the amount of $4,500 (distributed in the amount of $2,250 per semester).
The housing costs not covered by the LCA scholarship are the responsibility of the LCA and will be
charged to the LCAs student account
Ability to register for UNIV 390: Internship Seminar (Optional and paid for by LCA)
