Tutorial 4
**To be worked out by tutor in Tutorial class.
The remaining problems to be worked out by students in tutorial hours individually for submission
(hand written only) at the end of Tut. class (Max. 0.5 towards assignment mark). If they cannot
complete, they can do as homework and submit in the next day (Max.0.4 towards assignment mark).
The students can work out some of the problems before attending
the tutorial class in order to
complete all problems and submit at the end of Tut. Class. The students are required to submit to
the respective Tutor only.
1.**
Water at 60C flows in a 7.5cm diameter pipe at a mean flow velocity of 8m/s. Calculate the
flow rate in kg/s and liter/s.
[34.74 kg/s ; 35.34 l/s]
2.**
Air at 400kPa and 40C flows in a circular tube having a diameter of 5.0cm at a rate such that
the Reynolds number is 50,000. Calculate the flow rate in units of kg/s and cm3/s if the
dynamic viscosity of air is 1.8610-5 kg/ms.
[0.0365 kg/s; 8207 cm3/s]
3.**
A positive displacement flowmeter is used to measure the flow of liquid Freon 12 at 20C. A
flowrate of 2.35 gal/min is indicated. What is the mass flow in kg/s?
[0.197 kg/s]
4.**
A venturi is used to measure the flow of liquid Freon-12 at 20C. The throat diameter is 1.2cm
and the inlet diameter is 2.4cm. Calculate the pressure drop reading if the throat Reynolds
number is 105 and the discharge coefficient for the venture is 0.97.
[1.839 kPa]
5.
Repeat Q4 for a concentric orifice with the same diameter ratio and a flow coefficient of 0.63.
[4.65 kPa]
A vortex-shedding flowmeter has a characteristic dimension of 3mm and is used to measure
velocity in a region where the Reynolds number is 10 5. If a velocity of 4m/s is to be measured,
what shedding frequency may be anticipated?
[1173Hz]

A Pitot tube uses a manometer readout with a fluid having a specific gravity of 0.82. The tube
is oriented parallel to an airstream at 1atm, 25C, having a velocity of 30m/s. The accuracy of
the dynamic pressure measurement is 0.1mm of the height of the manometer fluid. The static
pressure is assumed exact, but the static temperature has an uncertainty of 1.2C. Assuming
that the nominal value of the velocity is 30m/s, calculate the uncertainty in its determination.
[0.06048m/s]
A Pitot tube is used to measure the velocity of an airstream at 20C and 1atm. If the velocity is
25m/s, what is the dynamic pressure in N/m2? What is the uncertainty of the velocity
measurement if the dynamic pressure is measured with a manometer having an uncertainty of
5Pa?
[376.5 N/m2; 0.166 m/s]
9.
A venturi is used to measure flow of water at 80F in a 5cm diameter line. The venturi has a
throat diameter of 2.5cm and discharge coefficient of 0.97. At the throat, the Reynolds number
is maintained at 1105. Calculate the volume flow rate.
[1696 cm3/s]
10.
What is the flow rate of the water if the venturi in Q9 is showing a pressure drop of 80Pa?
[197.1 cm3/s]
A Pitot tube is used to measure the velocity of an air stream at 20C and 1atm. What is the
dynamic pressure if the velocity is 25m/s?
[376.44Pa)]

In a differential pressure meter with inlet diameter of 10cm and throat diameter of 4cm, a
liquid with density of 612 kg/m3 and viscosity of 0.9910-5 kg/ms is maintained at a flow rate
such that the Reynolds number at the throat is 100,000. Calculate the liquid velocity at the
inlet and the throat.
