Students honored during school program

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
The accomplishments of all students
at Germantown High School who qualified for state and national competitions
were recognized during a program at
the school March 31.
The program recognized students in
co-curricular sports, clubs and activities
from spring 2014 through March. At the
start of the program, Athletic Director
Jack
Klebesadel
noted
that
Germantown has won five conference
championships this school year and
could tie the record with one more title
this spring.
After the program, Principal Joel
Farren noted that 80 percent of students
are involved in co-curricular activities.
Any one that qualified for state or
national competition we wanted to
acknowledge them as well and show
other students who maybe arent
involved that this is the commemoration,
this is the reason why we do these kinds
of things, Farren said.
Farren noted that there were a
record number of state qualifiers for
FBLA this year along with the number of
participants in the program. He noted
that many of the students recognized at
the program were in more that one activity.
We want to give that recognition

for the academic part too because they
work equally as hard, Farren said.
Farren said the program has been
held for four years and the number of
participants in FBLA and DECA keep
increasing.
Boys basketball Coach Steve
Showalter added that its neat to see
everybody get honored, not just the
sports. Theres activities out there for all

kids. We all believe being involved with

something is important for todays youth.
Whether it be my sport of basketball or
any activity, just being included and
being involved is so important for kids as
they grow up.
The program ended with the

US 41 added to Interstate system

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker
announced April 9 that U.S. 41 in the eastern
part of the state has been officially added to
the Interstate System as I-41.
"The Interstate designation is the culmination of years of hard work by federal, state,
and local officials that will stimulate economic
opportunities from Milwaukee to Green Bay
and beyond," Governor Walker said. "Our
Interstate system is a critical part of our infrastructure, which fuels commerce, helps grow
the economy, and create jobs."
The Federal Highway Administration
(FHWA) officially approved the Interstate designation - the final step in a process that began
nearly 10 years ago. Installation of about
3,000 new signs will begin this summer with
signing expected to be completed by
November 2015.
"The official designation of I-41 is tremendous news that will support the safe, efficient
movement of people and commerce for many
years to come," said Wisconsin Department of
Transportation Secretary Mark Gottlieb.
"Along with Governor Walker's leadership, I
want to thank former Congressman Tom Petri,

our current Congressional delegation, state

legislators, local government officials, and
community leaders who helped make I-41 a
reality."
Wisconsin's newest Interstate route runs
concurrently with US 41 for the entire route. I41 begins at the I-94/US 41 interchange located about one mile south of the
Wisconsin/Illinois border. It follows I-94 north
to the Mitchell Interchange, I-894 and US 45
around Milwaukee and then joins US 41 north
to Green Bay where it ends at the I-43
Interchange.
Existing US 41 in the Milwaukee area will
be re-routed to follow I-41 along I-894 and US
45. Current US 41 along Lisbon Avenue and
Appleton Avenue from I-94 at the Stadium
Interchange northwesterly to the interchange
with US 45 will be re-numbered WIS 175.

Germantown district
mulls next steps after
education summit
One of two major events in the
Germantown School District March 20 and
21 was the educational summit held at a conference center in the village.
The summit held at the Florian Park
Conference Center was described as
Version 1.0 and included participation by
approximately 90 people. According to a
draft summit overview from the district, the purpose of the summit was to bring some definition to the Germantown School District Way
through what it means to Empower and
Inspire Every Student to Success.
The Germantown Way was the title
given by district officials to develop the districts own curriculum and standards after the
School Board decided against accepting the
Common Core Standards in December 2014.
The summit was subtitled Moving
beyond standardization into the future of
learning for our students. Standardization
was mentioned in one of the first subject areas
in a summit overview that was prepared by
district staff following the summits.
Through the Industrial Age to today,
standardization has increased the ability to
efficiently produce the quality and quantity of
things we need and want in our lives, a draft
of the summit overview stated. The problem
is that the business and manufacturing mentality of standards and standardization
impedes our work to help children grow, learn
and develop into productive, capable, caring,
thinking, creative human beings all with
unique talents, strength, interests and overall
persona.
In area of standardization, two ideas
were suggested, according to the summit
overview: that the mentality of standardization could be one of the biggest challenges
facing education today given that there is
nothing standard about our kids, nor do we
want to make them all the same and possible benefits of shifting our focus on standardized academic content acquisition as the
end of schooling to engage students in learn-

...Record number of students in FBLA

From page 1
being honored for its runner up finish at the
Division I state basketball tournament. Public
address announcer Michael Aronow noted
that 77 percent of the points scored during
the 2013-14 championship season came from
seniors who then graduated.
Needless to say, this years group had
big shoes to fill, and fill them they did,
Aronow said. The boys basketball team won
the North Shore Conference title for the fifth
consecutive years, have won 73 consecutive
conference games and had a 27-1 record,
losing to Stevens Point in the Division I final.
Aronow noted that Germantown has a 133-5
record with three state titles and one runner-up
finish over the past five years.
Showalter then thanked the supportive student section, Klebesadel, Farren and the
team.
Thank you for all the support you have
given us. We have the best students, the best
crowd and best fans anybody could ask for,
he said.
Showalter and the team then presented
the Silver Ball award to the school for display in the awards case.
This is awesome. Obviously, we would
have much rather celebrated another gold
(ball) but to get second place with the team
we had, its a great group of kids we had a
blast every second of the way, Showalter
said after the program. For us to go 27-1 with
the team we had, we couldnt be any more
proud.
Farren added that the most recent basketball season has been a great ride. Theres
not shame in 27-1, although some are disappointed. Its been a lot of fun to be a part of.

Six vehicle warning signs

your nose can notice
(NAPSI)While most motorists are fond
of whats known as that new car smell,
there are some other specific odors that
motorists should also be aware of.
Identifying these suspect smells early
on can help car owners be car care aware
and avoid the hassle and expense of an
unexpected breakdown.
The Car Care Council recommends a
sniff test of your vehicle to identify any
unusual smells, including the following six
warning signs:
1. The smell of burnt rubber could be
slipping drive belts or misplaced loose
hoses that might be rubbing against rotating accessory drive pulleys. Do not reach
in if the engine compartment is hot.
2. The smell of hot oil could mean that
oil is leaking onto the exhaust system. To
verify the leak, look for oil on the pavement
or smoke coming from the engine area.
3. The smell of gasoline is likely the
sign of a gas leak in some area of the vehicle such as a fuel injector line or the fuel
tank. Any smell of fuel can result in a possible fire hazard, so immediate attention
should be given.
4. The sweet smell of syrup may be a

sign that your car is leaking engine coolant

from a leaky component related to the
cars cooling system. Do not open the radiator cap when it is hot.
5. The smell of burning carpet could be
a sign of brake trouble and a safety hazard. Have your brakes checked right away,
especially if this smell is happening during
normal driving conditions.
6. If the smell of rotten eggs is coming
from your vehicle, it could mean a problem
with your catalytic converter or a poorly
running engine causing the catalytic converter to become overloaded and fail due
to meltdown.
When you smell any peculiar odor,
you should not ignore it. Instead, bring
your vehicle to a professional service technician that you trust to get an informed
opinion on the nature of the odor, said
Rich White, executive director, Car Care
Council.
The Car Care Council is the source of
information for the Be Car Care Aware
campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care. For a copy of the councils

Getting your car ready for a trade-in

By Tresa Erickson
When it comes time to buy a new car,
some people sell their old one while others use it for a trade-in. While selling usually brings the best price, trading in a vehicle is a lot less hassle. The dealership usually handles all of the paperwork for the
trade-in, and all you have to do is sign on
the dotted line. Dealerships wont pay as
much for trade-ins due to the costs incurred
in selling them, but you can get a fair price
by prepping your car for the trade beforehand.

inspection report, to prove that you have

indeed taken care of your car.
Do your homework and research the
trade-in value of your car. There are several websites to assist you with this endeavor and you will probably uncover a low,
average and high retail value. Dont overestimate the trade-in value of your car.
Chances are the dealership will give you
the average trade-in value, unless it has a
lot of wear and tear. In that case, you
might receive a low trade-in value.
Once you know the trade-in value, you
can determine where the best deals are
and negotiate a good deal. If the price
offered for your trade-in seems too low,
you can use the knowledge and documentation you have gathered to get a better deal.

Ways to avoid expensive repairs

By Tresa Erickson
Whether new or used, a vehicle is a big
investment. Most people cannot afford to
pay for a car outright and must make payments on it instead, usually for three to five
years. Regular maintenance is a must to protect such an investment and extend the life of
a vehicle. Without it, the vehicle can break
down and require big bucks to repair.
Remember, the moment you drive the
vehicle off the lot, it is yours to care for. Read
the owners manual and follow the recommended maintenance schedule. Regular oil
changes and tire pressure checks are essential for keeping cars running their best and
using as little gas as possible. Change your
oil every 30,000 miles or as recommended
by the manufacturer. You can do this yourself
or have it done by a professional at a reasonable cost. Know the correct tire pressure
and keep your tires properly inflated. To
extend the life of your tires and ensure even
wear, have them rotated regularly.
There are many other components to a
vehicles engine, and it pays to have them
checked out from time to time. Again, follow
the manufacturers recommended maintenance schedule. A quality mechanic is your
best bet, unless you have extensive knowledge of the workings of a car. A mechanic
can check the air filter, brakes, fluids, exhaust
system, battery and radiator, among other
things.
Regular car washes are another must.
Bird and pest residue, tar and other substances can do major damage to a vehicles
exterior over time. It pays to keep your new
car clean, inside and out. Thats right. Take

the time to vacuum and clean the interior.

This is especially important if you have
young riders. Greasy fingers and sticky
foods and drinks can wreak havoc on interior upholstery and carpeting.
Even with the best of care, vehicles can
break down. You are the first line of defense
in avoiding expensive repairs. Know your
car. Pay attention to the way it sounds and
feels, and at the first sign of trouble, get it to
a repair shop. The smaller the problem, the
easier and cheaper it will be to fix.
