this
edition
of
Cognizance
Imagineering Change.
Geosynergy 2014 brought with it a
plethora
of
events
which
was
structured to test the academic
aptitude of the participants.
We had the Ideaz - the National Paper
Presentation Contest in which we
received more than 50 abstracts from
all over the country. The topics were
chosen so as to include the modern
developments going on in the Oil and
Gas Industry. Thus, we invited
abstracts on the theme EnP of Energy
Resources. Not restricting ourselves

to only the Oil and Gas sector, the

second topic on which the abstracts
were invited was New Trends in Earth
and Planetary Sciences. Both the
topics received quality participation.
Spotlight
is
our

exposed to a dose of healthy
competition.
DEPARTMENT OF HYDROLOGY

Under the banner of cognizance14

department of hydrology organised 5
events, which attracted over 60
participants from various parts of the
country with various creative and
innovative ideas.
Ideaz:

A. Cloud burst and Flash Floods:

Causes,
Consequences
and
Mitigation of Himalayan Floods
Intense rainfall often leads to
floods and landslides in the
Himalayan
region
even
with
rainfall amounts which may be
considered
comparatively
moderate
over
the
plains.
Cloudbursts
are
catastrophic
convective phenomena producing
sudden high-intensity rainfall (10
cm per hour) over a small area.
Forecasting and raising alerts of
such severe local weather systems
is crucial to mitigate societal
impact
arising
from
the
accompanying flash floods.
B. Bioremediation techniques for
hydrocarbon polluted sites
These days, problems like soil
contamination, health risks to the
habitual organisms etc. have been
increasing
due
to
heavy
consumption and demand of
petroleum
products.
These
hydrocarbon products have been
found to exert carcinogenic and
neuro-toxic effects on human
health. Though several mechanical
and
chemical
methods
are
followed for the degradation of
these products the rate of
contamination is quite high and
that makes these methods very
expensive. In view of this situation
bioremediation gives a better
solution compared to the currently
existing methods. It provides
efficacy, safety on long term use,
cost
and
simplicity
of

administration
with
promising
opportunity for creating better
environment.
Spotlight : Soil and Water
conservation in arid and semiarid regions
The average annual rainfall in
semi arid regions is 250 to
500mm. So less availability of
water necessitates the proper
conservation of water. Since water
plays
a
significant
role
in
agriculture production and our day
to day life it is vital to preserve
even the least amount of water
resources. Likewise, it is equally
essential
to
conserve
the
productive soil from erosion using
various
land
use
practices.
Overall,
soil
and
water
conservation
practices
have
become a must in semi arid
regions
for
sustainability
of
agricultural and day to day life.
Spectrum :
With the theme of save water
spectrum was held in two rounds,
1. tour-de-aqua
(elimination
round), and
2. craftomania (final round).
A
total
of
39
participants
participated in the first round. A
visit to the observatory and
various hydrological structures
was made on noon session on 22 nd
march. On the basis of abstracts
prepared by the participants 8
groups were formed for final round
on 23rd march. Teams prepared
models on the topic soil and water
conservation.

presented over the topic Classifiers
for flood prone area using remote
sensing elevation data emerged as
winners for their profound expertise
over their content. They were followed
by team lead by Nizar Ahamed K.
which delivered paper on A study on
emergency cast in situ sand brick
using Co2 gases for construction.
The audience that comprised of
research scholars and post graduates
working the relevant field took keen
participation in the event.
Second day we conducted some on
the spot events to judge the
immediate stimulus response of the
participants. It included designing

disaster awareness posture using two

colours only. This was followed by
second

event, as every year, has attracted an
appreciable amount of participation
from colleges all over India. This years
problem statement targeted the
miraculous treatment of regenerating
tissues. The problem statement was
Treatment of Bone disorders
using tissue engineering and
tissue regeneration techniques.
The winner of this event has come up
with very novice solution of treating
these disorders by in vivo tissue
regeneration. The judge for the event
was Dr. Mandal, who appreciated the
solutions provided by participants and
guided them with his experience in
same field.
If an experimental structure of a target
is not available, it may be possible to
create theoretical model of the target
using
homology/threading/ab-initio
approach based on the experimental
structure of a related protein. This was
where
the
participants
were
encouraged to predict prototype i.e,
the 3D structure of protein and search
for a potential inhibitor. The event
Prototype was organized for the first
time in department of Biotechnology
and got an appreciable response. The
event was followed by an interactive
session with judges Dr. Pravindra
Kumar, Dr. A.K. Sharma and Dr.
Krishna Mohan.
The informal events under Spectrum
were held with participation from both
biotech and non-biotech disciplines
.We have
brought a spontaneous
event for participants to check their
mettle in painting not through
conventional brushstrokes and canvas,
but by using agar plates and bacterial
cultures,
named
Chromogenic
painting and Ad- o- Genics, where
participants were provided with chart

papers to create posters, andl they

have acted out TV commercials for
products like water proof towels or
pills to grow macho moustache and
many more crazy products all they all
had fun and competed for chocolates,
sweets and other goodies.
DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRONICS
AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING
We, the cognizance team of E&C are
very much happy at the grand success
of the departmental cognizance during
21st to 23rd of march 2014.We focused
on the importance of technical
revolution in the field of semiconductors and their integration with
different physical devices like motor
vehicles and also upon the next
generation devices like transparent
OLED, High speed transmission etc.
The participation in all the events was
overpowering. We can confidently say
that we had one of the largest
participation
among
departmental
Cognizance events. In Ideaz, a paper
presentation event, we had an overall
participation of 72, where 20 students
were selected to present their idea. All
the presentations of Ideaz were
remarkable and thought-provoking,
where we had hard time selecting the
best of them.
For
Prototype,
we
focused
on
integrating semiconductor technology
with solar energy, there by prototyping
solar trackers which can automatically
track the sunlight. 6 prototypes were
considered for final evaluation where
we decided to award 2 winners for
their excellent performance.
In Spotlight we concentrated on the
quality of the work where we asked
participants
to
come
with
an
innovative way to control the cruise. It
was also successful where our beloved

professor was delighted

quality of work done.

with

the

During Cognizance we conducted

three spectrum events where all the
events were grand success with an
overwhelming response in each event.
Spectrum1,
Round
1
had
an
participation
over
150
students
provided with a challenge of solving
20 questions in 20 minutes there by
evaluating the on the spot ingenuity of
the participants. Later, in round 2 the
first 12 teams were provided with a
real problem to solve where the
practical and logical skills were tested.
Spectrum 2 was more of a fun event
where our event has attracted a lot of
attention. We endorsed electronics
knowledge of the participants through
Housie where instead of numbers we
used electronic circuit symbols. More
than 100 students turned up and we
had to close the registrations. It was
all fun.
Finally, on day 3 we concluded our
events with spectrum 3 where we
provided the exhausted crowd with
another fun and logical quiz which was
prepared
to
test
the
general
awareness of the contestants on the
growing trends and facts about
technology and innovations.
Participants
were
given
their
excellence
and
participation
certificates there by closing the
festival.
DEPARTMENT OF METALLURGICAL
AND MATERIALS ENGINEERING
Metallurgy, Cognizance has a long and
illustrious
history
of
showcasing
talents from across India. This year too
this trend continued with participation
from colleges as far of as Kerala.
Ideaz is a National Level Paper
Presentation. This year there was a

large participation with 45 teams

presenting papers on materials on
topics like materials in Energy, Green
Technology and Medicine whereas on
advances in light weight alloys in
metallurgy.
The next event was called Spotlight,
an Industrial Problem Solving event.
Through this event, participants had to
put their knowledge to use to solve
real world problems. Not all our events
were of an academic nature. The next
event was a light hearted dumb
charades event called Meta Charades
were we all bonded and let us off
steam after a long day.
The second day had the prototype
event,
Detritus.
Students
were
assigned with designing a strong
structure and assembling it by
welding. This event brought together
theory and practical in a fun, exciting
and hands on way. The third day saw
the
Materials
Quiz
Krystallos.
Contestants were tested on a wide
variety of topics on this field. The
soldering event, Sandhi was also
conducted during this day. Students
were tasked with creating beautiful
wireframe shapes by soldering.
This was wound up with a spectacular
show of sky lanterns, fireworks and
music all in collusion bringing a
magical end to our grade of fest.
CENTRE FOR
SYSTEMS

TRANSPORTATION

First batch of CTRANS (Centre for

Transportation Systems) at IIT Roorkee
had organized 3 events at Cognizance
2014. Those were Ideaz, Prototype and
Spectrum.
Ideaz was held on Friday (21 st march,
2014) from 10:00 a.m to 1:30 p.m. The
students had to present their Research
Papers on Smart Traffic Management
Solutions. The competition was judged

by a jury comprising Dr. Indrajeet

Ghosh (Civil Engineer), Prof Chandra
(Architect), and Prof M. Parida (Civil
Engineer and Urban Planner).
Prototype was a competition where
the students had to present a virtual
model of any multi-modal terminal
where they had to show integration of
at least 2 modes of transport. The
ideas were not restricted by giving
them any condition beforehand about
any site or by any software. We had
judges from CBRI namely, Ar. Ashok
Kumar (also an urban planner), Ar.
Neeta Mittal and Ar. R.K Garg. All these
judges have done a lot of work on
research
on
building
materials,
technology and design of various
types of buildings.
The third competition held was called
Spectrum where the participants
registered on the spot, the problem
was disclosed on the spot and the
participants had to make a 3-D
physical model from scrap to show
their concept as per the problem
statement. The judges for the
competition were Prof S.Y Kulkarni and
Prof Gaurav Raheja as they have
already worked on Roorkees railway
station and the problem statement
was related to a hypothetical railway
station. Also Dr. Abinash Swain (from
the field of product design) was the
third judge.
We were privileged to have a guest
lecture on CURVO from Mr. Shekhar
Chakravarty, Managing Director of
Conveyor and Ropeway Services Pvt
Ltd who has had an experience of 50
years in the field of Ropeway
Technology.
All the competitions were open to
students from all the fields as CTRANS
believes in going inter-disciplinary to
find better solutions for society. So we
had participants from mechanical

engineering, electrical engineering,

MBA as well apart from architecture,
town planning and Civil engineering.
The
overall
response
was
overwhelming as the number of
participants who appeared was good,
their ideas were so innovative that
many a times the judges had a tough
time and requested for allowing a tie
or an additional prize. The events went
on smoothly and the organizers
received special appreciation from the
judges for organizing well especially
from Prof Chandra and Prof Raheja.
But the most precious thing that
happened
in
the
process
was
exchange of innovative ideas of
students and the feedback of judges
such
that we
can
see
those
innovations happening in future which
is
the
sole
purpose
of
such
competitions.

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS
The Department of Physics from its
modest beginning in 1960 has now
grown in to an active center of quality
teaching and research. Today it stands
as one of the leading departments in
the country, well known for its
excellence in teaching and research.
The Department has been quite active
in
the
COGNIZANCE
since
the
inception of the latter in 2003. This
year, the department organized three
major events namely IDEAZ, Spotlight
and Spectrum.
Ideaz: It is a national paper
presentation
competition
meant
especially for the undergraduates and
the post graduate students who are
keenly interested in research and have
worked in different research fields and
hence published papers. The Ideaz
event had two broad categories:
1)
Quantum
Optics
and
its
Applications: The newly emerging
field of Quantum Optics has wide

range of applications and hence this

event attracted a lot of participants
with the winner being a team from
Delhi University. The event was judged
by Dr. Ajay Wasan and Dr. H. S. Nataraj
2) Earth- Sun Energetics and its
effect on technology: Atmospheric
Physics is the main specialization of
the department and active research is
being done in the field. The event was
organized on the second day of the
COGNIZANCE 2014 and was judged by
Dr. M. V. Sunil Krishna.
Spotlight:
This
event
was
experimental
rather
than
being
theoretical. A problem statement was

given online, the solutions of which

were invited through e-mails. The
selected candidates then were given a
more complex problem based on
optics. They came up with their
solutions and then tried the same
experimentally. The participants who
got
the
most
accurate
results
compatible with the experimental
setup were declared as the winners.
Spectrum: It was an on the spot
event. It consisted of fun filled games
but yet based on the basic laws of
physics. Some of them were Magnetic
Rail Gun, Crazy cannon balls, Rocket
Propeller etc.
