Spotlight : Soil and Water
conservation in arid and semiarid regions
The average annual rainfall in
semi arid regions is 250 to
500mm. So less availability of
water necessitates the proper
conservation of water. Since water
plays
a
significant
role
in
agriculture production and our day
to day life it is vital to preserve
even the least amount of water
resources. Likewise, it is equally
essential
to
conserve
the
productive soil from erosion using
various
land
use
practices.
Overall,
soil
and
water
conservation
practices
have
become a must in semi arid
regions
for
sustainability
of
agricultural and day to day life.
Spectrum :
With the theme of save water
spectrum was held in two rounds,
1. tour-de-aqua
(elimination
round), and
2. craftomania (final round).
A
total
of
39
participants
participated in the first round. A
visit to the observatory and
various hydrological structures
was made on noon session on 22 nd
march. On the basis of abstracts
prepared by the participants 8
groups were formed for final round
on 23rd march. Teams prepared
models on the topic soil and water
conservation.

plethora of events during Cognizance
2014 from 21st March to 23rd March
2014 like:
IdeazA
national

competition
which
provided students a prospect to
showcase their research work in
chemical engineering. It was divided in
two sections:
1) Ideaz A- Process Modelling,
Simulation
and
Transport
Phenomena
2) Ideaz B- Energy, Environment,
Safety Technologies
Spotlight- A long term problem solving
event in which students grappled with
a unique real time industrial problem.
This time the problem given was
Analysis and comparison of methanol
production from sugarcane bagasse
and Natural Gas.

IDEAZ:
The event was a huge sensation
with a lot of participants this
year. Teams participated with lot
of enthusiasm and showed their
technical
thoughts
with
a
perfect blend of feasibility and
usefulness. The ideas that were
presented impressed the judges
and left an everlasting effect on
the minds of the audience.
SPOTLIGHT:
Another event that caught
everybody`s eye and kept
everybody`s
ears
on
the
ground.
The
way
teams
represented their ideas in
support of a great topic added
to the beauty of the event.
Students had prepared really
hard for this battle of creativity
and it could be seen in their
presentations.

SPECTRUM:
This is one of those events that
by
itself
attract
many
participants. This was the most
successful and cheerful event
conducted this year. The event
saw a large number of people
showing interest to make the
best use of their knowledge to
make their ideas become real.
This time participants were first
shortlisted on the basis of some
fun events and then they were
told to make GAUSS GUN in

events and their imagination
made the event a sensation.
The theme that was provided
with each event impressed the
participants.
The
aura
of
knowledge and the heat of
competition
could
be
felt
simultaneously
during
the
event. Event went on to become
a huge success with 4 teams
winning the prizes.
In a nutshell, this year`s
COGNIZANCE made everyone
realize the power of ideas,
create them using imagination
and will to execute them
perfectly. Everybody in the team
gave his/her best and enjoyed

PROTOTYPE
The event was conducted by the
Consulting club (Samadhan) of DOMS
IIT Roorkee. It attracted active
participation from various elite BSchools of India like IIM Indore,
Welingkar to name a few.
The event expected the participant to
think beyond their imagination, use
their creativity, innovation and devise
a new product, which has not been
invented /innovated so far and is not
there is the market. It could be
anything from a flying bicycle to a
moving city. All they had to do was to
prove that there is a need for this
product in the market.
IDEAZ-1
The event was conducted by the E-Cell
of DOMS IIT Roorkee. It attracted
active participation from various elite
B-Schools of India like IIM Indore, NIAM
to name a few.
The event is the B-plan contest of
Cognizance, DoMS, IIT Roorkee. It gave
participants a unique opportunity to
power the future with their innovations
and shape the destiny of the future
business.
They
encourage
the
students to come up with sustainable
and tangible solutions to the problems
faced by our society now a days like
with
the
TRANSPORTATION
matter
and
the
remedies
or
suggestions for tackling the situation
are very much specific in the
presentations.
The
genuine
and
practical solutions were emerged from
the seminars of the participants.
Ms. Kalyanikumar from Graphic Era
University, Dehradun has given a
detailed study on the Trend analysis
of annual precipitation in the higher
altitudes of Uttarakhand for the
twentieth century. She conducted
detailed trend analysis using different
techniques and stated how the rainfall
changes affect the water resources
sector.
