Europe

EUROPEAN UNION
The European Union (EU) has evolved from a regional economic agreement among six
neighboring states in 1951 to today?s supranational organization of 26 countries across
the European continent
A new currency, the Euro, was launched in world money markets on 1 January 1999; it
became the unit of exchange for all of the EU states except the United Kingdom,
Sweden, and Denmark. In 2002, citizens of 12 euro-area countries began using the euro
bank notes and coins.
7 February 1992 (Maastricht Treaty signed establishing the EU); 1 November 1993
(Maastricht Treaty entered into force)
Europe Day 9 May (1950); note - a Union-wide holiday, the day that Robert Schuman
proposed the creation of an organized Europe.
27 countries:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France,
Germany, Greece, Hungary, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg,
Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania*, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, UK.
Candidate countries: Croatia, Turkey; note - the EC has recommended that Macedonia
become a candidate country.
SCHENGEN
The Schengen countries have joined efforts to enhance the quality of their service to
the public. A central database, common procedures and criteria for visa issuance and
use of the same visa sticker with high-level built-in security are all assets for both our
countries and you the visitor. Moreover, the use of a common visa system has enabled
us to re-organize our office network. Today the Schengen countries are represented by
professional and skilled staff at a much wider network than before. We now have over
1,500 offices worldwide, of which nearly 100 are located in the United States.
The Schengen visa helps promote a unified Europe, and is therefore an important
symbol of the European Union.
The name ?Schengen? originates from a small town in Luxembourg. In June 1985, seven
European Union countries signed a treaty to end internal border checkpoints and
controls. More countries have joined the treaty over the past years. At present, there
are 16 Schengen countries, all in Europe.
The 16 Schengen countries are: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany,
Iceland, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, and
Sweden. All these countries except Norway and Iceland are European Union members.

Brief History : A historical city built on 7 hills. Tiberine Islands, located in the Tiber
River, was dedicated by the Romans to the God of medicine, Aesculapius. Legend has it
that a Latin Princess Rhea Silvia, daughter of King Numitor, had twins Romulus &
Remus, fathered by the war God Mars. The king at that time was afraid that the twins
might make claim to his throne so he had them put in a basket & set them adrift on the
Tiber. The twins were found by a female wolf who fed them her own milk. Soon after a
shepherd adopted them & raised them as his own. Upon growing up, the boys vowed to
build a city where they had been abandoned as babies. Each chose a hill & became
leader of a new city. Eventually quarrels broke out & Romulus killed Remus, leaving
Romulus hilltop, Palatine, the center of the new city - ROME. (753 BC). First city in
history to have a population of 1 million.Current city is 30 feet above the ancient city.2

What made Murano?s glassmakers so special? For one thing, they were the only people
in Europe who knew how to make a mirror. They also developed or refined technologies
such as crystalline glass, enameled glass (smalto), glass with threads of gold
(aventurine), multicolored glass (millefiori), milk glass (lattimo), and imitation
gemstones made of glass.

of the surrounding limestone bedrock, it is 57 metres (260 feet) long, 6 m (20 ft) wide,
and has a height of 20 m (65 ft), making it the largest single-stone statue in the world.
Blocks of stone weighing upwards of 200 tons were quarried in the construction phase
to build the adjoining Sphinx Temple. It is located on the west bank of the Nile River
within the confines of the Giza pyramid field. The Great Sphinx faces due east, with a
small temple between its paws.
ISTANBUL
The city has had many names through its history and according to the culture, language
and religion of its rulers. Byzantium, Constantinople and Stamboul are examples that
may still be found in active use. The etymology of the names and an extended list of old
names can be found under Names of Istanbul. It has also been nicknamed ?The City on
Seven Hills? because the historic peninsula (the oldest part of the city) was built on
seven hills, also represented with seven mosques, one at the top of each hill.
The Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Turkish: Sultanahmet Camii) is a mosque in Istanbul, the
largest city in Turkey and the capital of the Ottoman Empire (from 1453 to 1923). The
mosque is famously known as the Blue Mosque for the blue tiles adorning the walls of
its interior. The Sultan Ahmed Mosque is the only mosque in Turkey that has six
minarets.

The Hippodrome of Constantinople (Sultanahmet Meydan) was a horse-racing track

that was the sporting and social centre of Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine
Empire and the largest city in Europe. Today it is a square named Sultanahmet Meydani
in the Turkish city of Istanbul, with only a few fragments of the original structure
surviving.

Dubai
It is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates on the Persian
Gulf, or that emirate?s main city, sometimes called ?Dubai City? to distinguish it from
the emirate.
Dubai has the largest population and is the second largest emirate by area, after Abu
Dhabi. Dubai is distinct from other members of the UAE in that revenues from oil
account for only 6% of its gross domestic product. A majority of the emirate?s revenues
are from the Jebel Ali Free Zone and, increasingly, from tourism.
The Burj Al Arab (Tower of the Arabs) is a luxury hotel in Dubai. It stands on an
artificial island connected to the mainland by a private curving bridge.
Dubai is famous for its shopping malls including Lamcy Plaza, City Centre, Gold Souk
etc.
The Dhow is a traditional Wooden boat. The Dhow cruise takes you along the Dubai
Creek where you see the unique blend of the modern and the traditional.
The Desert Safari takes you for a unique and memorable experience on the sand dunes
of the desert.
