FM Bug Transmitter V5

manyrequestsforahigherpoweredcircuitandbettermicrophonesensitivity.NowIcanintroducethenewFMWirelessMicrophone(v5),
whichalsohasabetterfrequencystability,over1Kmrange(underidealconditions)andisgoodonmicrophonesensitivityandeliminatesthe
nightmareofabeginnerTHEREISNOWOUNDCOIL!!itisthepartofthePCBitself.ThishasbeenachievedbyaddinganRFamplifier
buffer(with10dBgain)andanAFpreamplifiertoboostthemodulationalittle.Thispowerisenoughtoreceivethesignalsthrougha
regularSony/AiwaWalkmanradio,whichisthebestrecoursetopretendyouareenjoyingmusic!,whenyouarerequiredtomonitorfroma
publicplace.
Themostcriticalcomponent,fromsensitivityaspectistheCondenserMicrophone.Intheearlystageofthisproject,Iusedthe"normal"
micusedinTapeRecorder,whichcostedmejustRs5,leadingmetoaratherdisappointingproject.Theresponseofthecircuittofeeble
sounds,whichweareinterestedin,wasterrible.Iusedtospeak"INTO"themicasifaddressingameeting.
Then,IgotthespecialHighSensitiveMicusedinCordlessPhone'sBaseunitfromalocalelectroniccomponentstore.Thisopeneda
newworldanditcaneventransmitssoundswhichnoonecanevenhear,attheeavesdroppingsite.
TheMicshouldbedirectlyexposedtothesurrounding,maybethroughaslitintheenclosure,exposingjustthe"Frontface"ofthemic
onthesurface.TheMicdosenotrequiretobedirectedtothesourceofthesoundforitcanreceivethereflectedwavesfromthewall,if
present.ButthereshouldbenoobstacleinthelineoftheMic,atleast2feetaway,sothatitcanreceivevibrations.

TheCircuit
Constructionisquitesimple.L1is3.25turnsinspiralformandisanintegralpartofthePCBfoilpattern.ThetwoBC547transistorscan
bereplacedwith(almost)anysmallsignalNPNtransistor,suchasthe2N2222.ThefinalstageisaBC557PNPgeneralpurposedevice.If
youusedifferentdevicesthenyoushouldselectthe1M0resistorfor5voltsDCatthecollectorofthethefirsttransistor.Selectthe47K
resistorfor34voltsonthecollectorofthethirdtransistor.HereistheV5componentoverlaydrawing.Notethatthereisamodification:

Construction
ThePCBis50mmx25mm,buttheCoppersidelayoutisdesignedbiggerforclarity.Whileprinting,scaledowntheimageto34%from
thePrinterproperty/Pagesetup.Thisgivesabetterresolutionalittle"Patchy"image.NEVERreducethesizeofthelayoutfromanyimage
editingapplicationbecauseitresultsin"Zaggy"image,makingtheprintunusableforthePCBmakingprocess.Please
IfyouknowhowtomakePCBeitherby"DirectPhotographic"methodor"SilkScreenStencil"method,itwon'ttakemorethanhalfan
hourtocompletetheproject!!butifnot,thereisanopportunitytolearntheartofInHousePCBfabrication.
Thefirstprototypeisshownabove,besidethebatterypoweringit.Theoutputpowerisabout+10dBmwhichwouldtheoreticallygiveit
3.12timestherange(1.6Km)butIhaveonlytesteditusingahandheldreceiverwiththeTXlayingonthebenchindoors.ButIgota
comfortable700meters(andafewfunnylooksfromourneighbors).
BeginnersalwaysdenytheAntenna!Itsveryimportantforthefulltransmissionenergydessipation.A2628SWGenameledcopperwire
usedinMotorwindingofFanetcwilldo.Apieceoflength75cm(1/4ofthewavelength)doeswellbutashorter23cmalsoperforms
well.YoushouldbecarefullthattheAntennawireshouldNOTLYINGoverthePCB.ItgeneratestrayinductorwiththePCBandwhenthe
coilisitselfetchedonthePCB,problemincreases.KeeptheAntennahangingverticallyfree.

Thetuningisstraightforward.TheTrimmercaneasilytunetheoscillationinthe88108MHz(3Meters)band.Totunethetransmitting
frequency,bringastandardFMradioinfrontofthemicandtuneyourpreferredfrequency.Nowtunethetrimmeruntila"FeedBack"
soundfromtheradio'sspeakeroccurs.TuneinthemiddleofZonewherethefeedbackoccurs.WithWalkman,IfoundaNobelIdea!place
oneoftheearpieceofthewalkmaninyourear,otherclosetotheMIC.Dothesameasforthestandardradio.
