Weatherproof Line Wire consists of single conductor covered with either polyethylene or
cross-linked polyethylene. Conductors may be
compact or concentric strand of ACSR, ASC or
AASC or solid, compact or concentric strand
copper. Weatherproof Line Wire meets the
requirements of CEA WCWG 06, and the ANSI /
ICEA S-70-547 specification, as applicable.

Different conductor types are available. Solid or

stranded MHD or Annealed copper; compact or
concentric HD Aluminum, Aluminum Alloy, or
ACSR are all options that are available.
The conductors meet the requirements of CSA
C49.1, C49.2, C49.4, ASTM B8, B231, B232, B400,
or B496 as applicable. For aluminum and ACSR
conductors, the direction of lay of the outer layer
of the strand is right-hand. For copper conductors, the direction of lay of the outer layer of the
strand is left-hand.
Cable constructions manufactured to the CEA
WCWG 06 specification are made using concentric stranded conductors. Cable constructions
manufactured to the ANSI / ICEA S-70-547 specification can be either concentric, or compact.
For products manufactured with aluminum conductors, the product is available with conductor
corrosion resistant inhibitor treatment.
For copper conductors 4/0 AWG and smaller,
they are manufactured using medium hard
drawn copper. For copper conductors larger
than 4/0 AWG they are typically manufactured
using annealed copper strand wires. Medium
hard drawn copper designs are available.

(1) Codeword modified with the suffix "/MD" denotes product manufactured with Medium Density PE; "/XLP" denotes product manufactured
with XLPE insulation.
(2) Thickness of covering to ICEA S-70-547 (which is equivalent to the CEA WCWG-06 specification).
(3) Rated strength is based on CSA C49.1 calculation method and include the ICEA S-70-547 0.9 derating factor.
(4) Based on conductivity of 61.2% (average lot) IACS @20C for aluminum and 8% IACS @20C for steel core. AC resistance for single layer
conductors includes the effects of core magnetization. To convert to ohm/km multiply value x 3.281.
(5) Based on conductor temp. of 75C, 32C ambient, 0.6 m/sec (2 ft/sec) crosswind, 0.6 coefficient of emissivity, full sun. (as per CSA C22.3 Part 1).
(6) XLPE coverings are not recommended for use with ACSR, Aluminum and Aluminum Alloy conductors when used for line wire applications
where sag and tension requirements must be maintained. Operation of the conductor at temperatures in excess of 93C will lead to loss in
tensile strength of the aluminum strand components. The loss in strength will decrease the rated strength of the conductor and increase
conductor sag distance. The indicated ampacity value is based on conductor temp. of 90C, 32C ambient, 0.6 m/sec (2 ft/sec) crosswind, 0.6
coefficient of emissivity, full sun (as per CSA C22.3 Part 1).
* Designates a construction and conductor size which is included in the CEA WCWG-06 specification when built with "/MD" or "/ XLP" covering.

Covering:
The standard product is built using black, weather resistant, Linear Low Density Polyethylene
(LLDPE). Alternate materials such as black,
weather resistant Medium Density Polyethylene
(MDPE); black, weather resistant cross-linked
polyethylene (XLPE); or black, weather resistant
high density cross-linked polyethylene (HDXLPE)
coverings are also available.
As per the CEA WCWG-06 specification, constructions are required to be manufactured
using either MDPE or XLPE covering material.
XLPE coverings are not recommended for use
with ACSR, Aluminum and Aluminum Alloy conductors when used for line wire applications
where sag and tension requirements must be
maintained. Operation of the conductor at temperatures in excess of 93C will lead to loss in
tensile strength of the aluminum strand components. The loss in strength will decrease the
rated strength of the conductor and increase
conductor sag distance.

Weatherproof Overhead Line Wire

Single Conductor LLDPE or XLPE Covered Line Wire to ICEA S-70-547 and/or CEA WCWG-06
Covering (continued):
When specifying a product it is best to always
add a suffix code identifier to designate the covering material. Add the letters "MD" for medium
density PE, "XLP" to designated XLPE, and
"HDXLP" for high density cross-linked polyethylene. The default condition, without an identifier,
typically assumes the LLDPE covering is to be
used.

Features and Benefits:

The covering provides mechanical protection to
the conductor and is resistant to weathering and
chemicals. If the conductors accidentally come
into contact due to high winds, falling tree limbs,
or other disturbances, the covering resists short
circuits and the tendency for conductors to weld
together.

Applications:
Weatherproof Line Wire is used for overhead
transmission and distribution lines. Covered Line
Wire is not an electrically insulated cable.
Therefore, it should be installed on insulators,
and users should treat line wire as bare conductor for personal safety.

* Designates a construction and conductor size which is included in the CEA WCWG-06 specification when built with "/MD" or "/ XLP"
covering.
** note- The code name Hornbeam is an accepted name for the 6201 covered line wire in the USA. In Canada, the same code name is used
for 300 kcmil compact stranded, all aluminum stranded conductor (ASC), PE covered line wire.
note - The AWG size indicated represents a size with equivalent electrical resistance of the same gauge size of a 1350 all aluminum
conductor (as per ICEA S-70-547). The mm2 size is the actual cross-sectional area of the 6201 T81 conductor. The grade of aluminum alloy
utilized by General Cable also meets the requirements of 6201 T81 alloy material. To convert mm2 to kcmil, multiply value x 1974.
note - The AWG size indicated represents a size with equivalent electrical resistance of the same gauge size ACSR conductor (as per CEA
WCWG-06). The mm2 size is the actual cross-sectional area of the 6101 T81 conductor. The grade of aluminum alloy utilized by General
Cable also meets the requirements of 6202 T81 alloy material. To convert mm2 to kcmil, multiply value x 1974.
(4) Based on conductivity of 52.5% (average lot) IACS @20C for the aluminum alloy material.
