ThisarticleisastepbystepguideonhowtodualbootWindows7andKaliLinuxonasingleharddiskdrive (HDD).KaliLinuxiswhatusedtobe
BackTrackLinux,adistributiondesignedforpenetrationtestingandsecurityprofessionals.Itshipswithabout300penetrationtestingandhacking
applicationsinstalled.
WhileBackTrackisbasedonUbuntu,KaliLinuxisbasedonDebian,andusesthecompleteDebianInstaller.Asaresult,theinstallationprocessis
differentfromthatofBackTrack,whichusesUbuntusgraphicalinstallationprogram.
TheobjectivehereistoshowhowtoinstallitonanHDDalongsideanexistinginstallationofWindows7,withtheWindows7bootmanager asthe
masterbootloader,sothatattheend,whenthecomputeris(re)booted,youwillbepresentedwithabootmenuthatlooksjustliketheoneshownbelow.
SelectingWindows7bootsthesystemintoWindows7andchoosingKaliLinuxwill,bydefault,takeyoutotheKaliLinuxbootmenu,whichisthesame
thingastheGRUB2menu,theversionofGRUBusedbyKaliLinux.

TobypassKaliLinuxsbootmenu,simplyeditthefilenamed/etc/default/grubandchangeGRUB_TIMEOUT=5toGRUB_TIMEOUT=0.Thenrun
theupdategrubcommand.

Nowthatweknowwhattodo,andwhattheresultwillbe,letsgetitdone.Ifyouhavenotdonesoalready,downloadaninstallationimageofKaliLinux
fromhere.
1.ShrinktheWindows7CDrive:MytestsystemhasanexistinginstallationofWindows7ona500GBHDD,withjusttwoprimarypartitions.Thisis
howtheyappearinWindows7spartitionmanager .ThetaskhereistoshrinktheCdrivetocreateroomforinstallingKaliLinux.Todothat,rightclick
ontheCdriveandselectShrinkVolume.
Note:IfyouintendtoinstallWindows7afresh,thisprocesswillbealoteasierifyousetasidethefreespacethatwillbeusedforKaliLinux
duringtheinstallationofWindows7.

IfyouhaveenoughfreespaceontheCdrive,thesystemwillsuggesta5050splitofthefreespace.Whichisjustgoodenoughforthistestinstallation.

Aftertheoperationhascompleted,youshouldseethenewlyreclaimedspacenexttotheCdrive.Youmayexitthepartitionmanagerandrebootthe
computer.BesuretohavetheinstallationdiscofKaliLinuxintheopticaldrivebeforerebooting.

2.InstallKaliLinux:ThebestoptiontoselectonKaliLinuxsbootmenuisGraphicalInstall.Itgivesyouapointandclickinstallationprocess.Install
worksjustaswell,buttheinterfaceisncursesbased.

ForinstallingKaliLinux,thefollowingpartitionswillbecreated:/boot,/,/home,andSwap.Inthatorder.The/homepartitionisoptional.Atthedisk
partitioningmethodsstepoftheinstallationprocess,yougetabunchofoptions.Becausenoneoftheguidedoptionswillcreateaseparate/bootpartition,

HereyoucanseetheexistingWindows7partitions,bothofwhichareprimarypartitions.Thefreespace,reclaimedfromWindows7inthepreviousstepis
whatwillbeusedforcreatingthepartitionsforKaliLinux.Tostartcreatingthepartitions,selectthefreespaceandclickContinue.
