Probador lgico
El principal propsito de este evaluador de circuitos es proveer convenientemente a los usuarios de
una fuente de CD, un generador de funciones, un vltmetro digital, un arreglo 8 bits de LEDs, dos
displays de 7 segmentos y switches lgicos, todo en el mismo aparato. Permite tambin crear una
interface entre ste equipo e instrumentos perifricos a travs de los adaptadores tipo banana y
BNC que trae integrados.
A.BecomefamiliarwiththeIDL800chassisNotethattherearpanel
(forwardfacingnearverticalpanelatthebackofunit)containsthe
masterpoweronoffswitch.Inaddition,theleftsideofthepanel
containsafunctiongeneratorwhichcangenerateanelectricalsignal
inthreeforms:sinusoidal,triangular,andsquarewave.Boththe
frequencyandamplitudecanbevaried.Ontherightsideofthepanel,
thereisadigitalvoltmeterthatcanmeasurevariousvoltagesapplied
tocircuits.Notethatthevoltmetercanbeconnectedeithertobanana
plugsorthesmallwireconnectorsthatareusedtoconnectcircuit
pinstogether.
B.StudytheflatportionoftheIDL800chassis.Ontheleftsideare
two+5VDC(nonvariable)poweroutputs,plusavariableDCsupplywith
outputsof015and0(15)V.Ontherightarewireconnectortobanana
plugadaptersandotherinputs(whichwillnotbeusedinthis
lab).Atthebottomaresomefunctionswitchesthatcanapply+/ 5V,
andtwopulseswitcheswhichwillapplya1(5V)or0(0V)aslongas
theyarehelddown.Therearealso8dataswitchesthatcanbe
switchedtoapply1or0(5Vor0V)toanyinput.Attherearofthe
flatboardaredataindicators,includingtwosevensegmentdisplays
whichwilldisplaynumbers,and8lightemittingdiode(LED)indicators
whichcanbeconnectedtocircuitpinstoindicatewhetheraone(5V)
ora0(0V)ispresent.A1willlightuptheLED;a0turnsitoff.
C.Thecenteroftheflatchassisareaistheprototypeboard.Atthetop
andbottomarepowerbusses.Whentheseareconnectedbythesmall
solidcopperwirestooneofthesupplies(redto+,bluetogroundor
0),alltheotherholesintherespectivelinesconnecttothatvoltage
element.
D.Notethattheprototypeboardcontainstwomainareasofpins.Whena
chipispluggedintoanysetofpinsinsuchawaythatitbridgesthe
widespaceinthemiddleofeachpingroup,allpinholesineach
verticalcolumnwhichcontainsachippinarealsoconnectedtothat
pin.Thusothercomponents,inputs,orvoltagescanbeconnectedto
eachpinofthecircuitbeingevaluated.

Theseswitcheshavethreesettings:+5V,0V,and5V.Usethe0V
settingtorepresent0andthe+5Vsettingtorepresenta1.
Bothoftheholesnexttoeachswitchareoutputholes.
C.PulseSwitchPanel:Thepulseswitchpanelisdirectlytotherightof
the3wayswitchpanel.Useittosupplyasignalthatisazeromost
ofthetimeandmomentarilya1.
Youcanalsouseittosupplyasignalthatis1mostofthetimeand
momentarily0.Thiscanbehandyasaslowmotionclocksignal.
TheholesnexttoAandBprovide0untiltheswitchispressed.A1is
momentarilyprovidedandthenthesignalgoesbackto0.Theholes
nexttoA(Acomplement)andB(Bcomplement)provide1untilthe
switchispressed.A0ismomentarilyprovidedandthenthesignalgoes
backto1.

E.8BitDataDisplayPanel:The8bitdatadisplaypanelisdirectly
belowthedigitalvoltmeterpanel.Thispanelallowsyoutoobservethe
valueof8differentsignalatthesametime.Ifa0issuppliedtoa
datadisplay,thelightwillbeof.Ifa1issuppliedtoadata
display,thelightwillbeon.
Therearetwoholesforeachdatadisplay.Usetheleftholeforinput
tothedisplayandtherightholetosendthesignaltosomeother
locationifrequired.
F.SignalGenerationPanel:Thesignalgenerationpanelislocatedinthe
upperlefthandcorneroftheIDLpanel.Itcontains:
a.TheON-OFF switchfortheentirelogicpanel
b.AdiallabeledAmplitude whichcontrolstheintensityofthe8
bitdatadisplaylamps.
c.Aswitchwith5differentFrequency-range settings.
d.ADiallabeled1-10whichcontrols/adjuststheoutputfrequency
withaselectedrange.
e.AholelabeledOut.Whenyouwanttosetupaperiodicclock
signalconnectawirefromthisholetoyourcircuit(08V).
f.Aswitchwhichselects3differentSignal-waveform settings.
Keepthisswitchatthesquarewavesetting.

VI. IC Hardware Configurations
1.TheICsusedinthislabareTTLlogicpartswhichcontain
multiplecopies,2,4,6,or8,ofalogicgate.
2.Thechipsmayhave14,16,18,22,ormorepinsforaccessingthe
logicfunctions.Thepinsprovideforaccesstothelogic
operatorsinputandoutputsignals,andthechipspowervoltage
(Vcc)andground.
3.Eachchiphasanotch(ordimple)ononeend.Thepinsarenumber
counterclockwisestartingwithpin1.Pin1isalwaysthefirst
physicalpintotheleftofthechipsnotchwhenviewedfrom
above.
ChecktheICsdatasheettodeterminewhichpinsareusedfor
powerandgroundconnection.Donotconnectthesevoltages
backwards.ThisistheeasiestmethodtodestroyanIC.
ICsaresusceptibletostaticelectricitybutareotherwisevery
rugged.YouTAwillshowyouhowprotecttheICs.Unfortunately
thelabsdonothavegroundingstraps.
4.CaremustbetakenwhenpluggingICsintothebreadboard.The
pinsareeasilybentandmaybreakoff.Especiallyiftheyhave
beenbentinseveralpreviouslabs.ICsmaybeharderto
installiftheyarenew.Therowsofpinspointslightly
outward,awayfromeachother.Wheninsertingthechip,tipit
slightlytothesideandstartthepinsfromonesidefirst.
Whentheyareintheirrespectiveholes,tiptheothersidedown.
Ifthepinsarenotquitealignedapplyasmallamountof
pressureorevenuseapenciltohelpadjustindividualpins.If
youhavetoforceitsomethingiswrong!Stopandtryagain.
5.TheIDL800sareruggedbutneedyourspecialattention.Wires
orpins,whilebeinginsertedintoholesonthecontrolpanelor
thebreadboardarea,maybebrokenoffintheseholes.TheIDL
maynolongerbeuseable.TheIDLunithasredundantholesbut
thoseareonlyatemporaryfixandmayprohibitsomeofthemore
complexexperimentslaterinclasswheremultipleconnectionsare
needed.InformyourTAofanysuchproblemsthatyoudiscover.
