This document summarizes a laboratory experiment to determine the unit weight of coarse aggregates. The procedure involved filling a metal bucket in three layers with coarse aggregates, rodding each layer 25 times. The weight of the aggregates was measured and divided by the volume of the bucket to calculate the unit weight. Three trials were performed, obtaining unit weights between 8821.6 N/m^3 and 9385 N/m^3. The significance is that determining the unit weight of coarse aggregates is important for designing concrete mixtures.

Lab Exercise No. 3

Objective

II.

To determine the unit weight of coarse aggregate of nominal size in a

compacted condition.
Procedure
1. Fill the 1/3 of the metal bucket with coarse aggregates obtained
from previous activity. Using the metal rod, rod the aggregate with
25 strokes, evenly distributed over the surface. Fill the bucket with
another 1/3 so that the bucket is 2/3 full of coarse aggregates.
Repeat the rodding procedure. Fill the last 1/3 to overflowing and
rod to strike off the excess aggregates.
2. Put the rodded aggregates in an empty container and weigh the
coarse aggregates in determine its mass.
3. Measure the metal bucket and obtain its volume to solve for the
unit weight of the aggregate. Solve by dividing the weight of the
aggregates with the volume of the bucket (N/ m

III.

4. Repeat the procedure twice.

Computation
D = 0.152m
H = 0.224m
V=

4.065 103 m3

Trial 1:
M = 3.665kg
W = mg = 3.665(9.81) = 35.86N
3

= W/V = 35.86/ 4.065 10

= 8821.6 N/ m

Trial 2:
M = 3.877kg
W = 3.877(9.81) = 38.03N
3

= 38.03/ 4.065 10
= 9355.5 N/ m

Trial 3:
m = 3.889kg
W = 3.889(9.81) = 38.15N
3

= 38.15/ 4.065 10
= 9385 N/ m

Significance
The significance of this laboratory activity is to determine the unit
weight of the coarse aggregate which will be used in the designing of
concrete mixture. It is important to rod each layer to fill the spaces.
Conclusion
By adding each layer of aggregates in bucket and rodding each layer,
the spaces were filled until the coarse aggregates were compacted. With
the compacted aggregates the unit weight has been obtained by dividing
the weight with its volume filled. Since there are three trials, it is expected
that the values are different due to different size of coarse aggregates
were used and not all of the spaces have been filled in rodding, however,
the values obtained were not that far from each other.
