Implementation Plan

This implementation plan outlines a professional development program for teachers on the flipped classroom model. The plan aims to have teachers learn about flipped classrooms, create video lectures, collaborate to implement flipped lessons, and share successes by the end of the school year. Teachers will meet four times throughout the year - at the beginning to learn the model, in October to share first videos, in January to showcase first flipped lessons, and in March to discuss experiences. Surveys will assess how well teachers incorporate the four pillars of flipped learning into their practice. The goals are to facilitate student learning and creativity, design digital learning, and engage in professional growth.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ON FLIPPED CLASSROOMS

INTRODUCTION
A flipped classroom is an educational model in which the typical lecture and homework elements
of a course are reversed. The benefits of flipping a classroom are listed below for both teachers
and students.
TEACHERS:
Become coaches or advisors.
Create short video lectures or select online videos.
Create a learning culture where class time is dedicated to exploring topics in greater
depth through explorations and/or projects.
Speak the language of todays learners by using technology that is known by students.
Place lectures on line that are broken into engaging small segments.
STUDENTS:
Can watch videos created by their teachers at their own pace, placing lectures under their
control.
Pace their own learning according to their needs (resource students.)
Have access to material that incorporates visual representations, graphs or photos.
Are responsible for their own learning.
Use class time to apply their knowledge through projects, exercises or discussions.
Interact with other students on hands-on activities.
If absent, do no miss instruction since the lessons are on-line.
GOALS
We will meet the following ISTE standards when incorporating flipping techniques or
completely flipping our classrooms.
1) Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to
facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both
face-to-face and virtual environments.
2. Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments
incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context
and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the Standards
5. Engage in professional growth and leadership
Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and
exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and
demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources.

IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

Goals
By the first week of school (August 25-29), get
to know the definition and benefits of a flipped
classroom and learn about free resources to
start a flipped classroom model.
By October 06, create a video lecture and/or
search for appropriate video lectures on Khan
Academy, TedEd or YouTube.
By January 05, collaborate with other teachers
to start the implementation process of a flipped
classroom. Use components of this model to
create a blended lesson or completely flip a
lesson.
By March 09, share examples of student work,
success stories or concerns regarding this
model of teaching.

Strategies
Send a Prezi about flipped classrooms to all
staff through school email before the school
year starts.

By June 18, have at least half of the lessons

flipped.

Provide tutorials (iMovie, Camtasia) on video

creation and cloud services (Evernote).

Provide tutorials on iMovie (video creation) to

beginners and Camtasia for an advanced group.
Share first lesson using the flipped classroom
model during the department meetings. Share
resources (the video created or video of lessons
found of the web).
Differentiate professional development for
those teachers who are not ready to fully
implement one lesson using this model.

TIMELINE

1st meeting at the beginning of the school year (1st day of school, August 25)
2nd meeting first uploaded video (Staff development #1, October 6)
3rd meeting first complete flipped lesson (staff development #2, January 5)
4th meeting share success stories, (staff development #3, march 9)

FEEDBACK
Educators will take a survey on the four pillars of FLIP to assess their teaching practice through
the integration of the flipped model. The surveys will be distributed after the first
implementation of the flipped lesson (January 05.) The survey will also serve as an exploration
guide to successfully implement the flipped classroom model.

IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

Criteria
I establish spaces and time frames that
permit students to interact and reflect
on their learning as needed.
I continually observe and monitor
students to make adjustments as
appropriate.
I provide students with different ways
to learn content and demonstrate
mastery.
I give students opportunities to engage
in meaningful activities without the
teacher being central.
I scaffold these activities and make
them accessible to all students through
differentiation and feedback.
I prioritize concepts used in direct
instruction for learners to access on
their own.
I create and/or curate relevant content
(typically videos) for my students.
I differentiate to make content
accessible and relevant to all students.
I make myself available to all students
for individual, small group, and class
feedback in real time as needed.
I conduct ongoing formative
assessments during class time through
observation and by recording data to
inform future instruction.
I collaborate and reflect with other
educators and take responsibility for
transforming my practice.
