Open House

Ive enclosed copies of a memo announcing the open house for the Travel Abroad
Program. Please distribute the memo to students in your classes.
Last year we had 25 students participate in the trip to England. If you have had the
opportunity to talk with them about this experience, you know that the trip was very
worthwhile and gave them memories that will last a lifetime. I am confident that
the trip to Italy will be just as rewarding to those who participate. As you know, the
experiences students gain from traveling abroad cannot be replaced in the
classroom.
I appreciate your support of the program and your help in promoting it with your
students.

Memo Gallery Walk

As you walk around the room looking at the different memos, try to figure out what
is wrong with each memo. Each memo has AT LEAST ONE THING wrong. You will
only have 3 minutes to decide (as a team) what is wrong with each memo before
you have to move to the next one.

MEMO FORMATTING

When formatting memos, the margins are just like a business letter, set at 2 inches
on top, and 1 inch on all other sides. The heading of a memo is made up of the TO:,
FROM:, DATE:, and SUBJECT: fields that are all typed in capital letters. With the
exception of the SUBJECT: field, the information is typed in proper capitalization.
The SUBJECT of a typed memo should be in ALL CAPS. The fields of the heading
should be double spaced.

In a memo, there is a double space between the heading and the body. Paragraphs
in the body are aligned at the left margin and are single space with a double space
between each one. The message within the body of a memo should be short and
to the point.

8TH GRADE TRIP

This year the 8th grade class will be going to Disney World over Spring Break. By
now you should have already made a few payments towards the trip but there are a
few things to keep in mind in the time leading up to the trip. If your behavior is
such that you earn a referral, you are taking a chance of losing the privilege of
going on the trip.
You will be expected to follow all school rules while on the trip so now is a good time
to practice. You will need to make sure your school work is kept up so you dont
have as much class work to catch up on when you get back. Mostly make sure that,
when the time comes, you are aware of what is expected of you while you are on
the trip. Attached is a document that reminds you of the guidelines of going on the
8th grade trip.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

When you are in class, you are expected to act with a certain amount of maturity.
You should not be running around and horse playing for any reason. When there is
a class discussion, you should only speak when its your turn to speak and you
should stay on topic. You should always have a pencil or pen on hand to write
things down as necessary. The most important expectation that you need to meet,
however, is to think about what you are doing.
Critical thinking is VERY important to your success in school. It helps you to decide
what to do and when to do it. It helps you to puzzle out what it is that the teachers
want you to do and it allows you to apply things you learned earlier in your
educational history to what you are doing now.
