15.3 Double Integrals Over General Region: X Ax B

This document discusses evaluating double integrals over general regions. It describes two types of regions - type I bounded by curves and vertical lines, and type II bounded by curves and horizontal lines. Double integrals over these regions are evaluated as iterated integrals, with the order of integration depending on the region type. Examples of limits of integration are provided for each region type by explaining how to draw lines through the region. Important concepts like the idea of using a vertical line and sometimes needing to break integrals into more parts are also noted.

3 Double Integrals over General Region

Evaluating Double Integrals over General (Non-Rectangular) Regions

We will consider two types of regions

Type I region
A region bounded by

y = g 2 ( x)

the lines x = a , x = b
and

the curves y = g 1 ( x ), y = g 2 ( x )
with g1 ( x) g 2 ( x) x [ a, b ]

y = g1 ( x)

Type I region is

RV = {(x , y ) : a x b , g 1 (x ) y g 2 (x )

x=a

Type II region

A region bounded by

y=d

the lines y = c , y = d

x = h2 ( y )
x = h1 ( y )

and
the curves x = h1 ( y ), x = h 2 ( y )
with h1 ( y ) h2 ( y )

x=b

y=c

y [c , d ]

Type II region is

R H = {( x , y ) : c y d , h1 ( y ) x h 2 ( y )}

Double integrals over both regions

evaluated as iterated integrals

If R is type I then

f ( x, y )dA =

g2 ( x )

a g1 ( x )

f ( x, y )dydx

If R is type II then

f ( x, y )dA =

h2 ( y )

h ( y )

f ( x, y )dxdy

Find limit of Integrals for type I region R

Step 1. Draw a vertical line through the region R at an arbitrary fixed value x. This line
intersects the region below at the curve y = g1 ( x) and above at the curve y = g 2 ( x) .
Then y = g1 ( x) is the lower limit and y = g1 ( x) is the upper limit of the inner
integral.
Step 2. Move the line left and then right. Leftmost position where the line intersects the
region R is x = a which is lower limit of the outer integral. Rightmost position where
the line intersects the region R is x = b which is the upper limit of the outer integral.

Find limit of Integrats for type II region R

Step 1. Draw a horizontal line through the region R at an arbitrary fixed value y. This
line intersects the region left at the curve y = h1 ( x) and right at the curve y = h2 ( x) .
Then y = h1 ( x) is the lower limit and y = h1 ( x) is the upper limit of the inner
integral.
Step 2. Move the line down and then up. Lowest position where the line intersects the
region R is y = c which is lower limit of the outer integral. Highest position where the
line intersects the region R is y = d which is the upper limit of the outer integral.

Important points to note:

Outer limits always constant

The idea of using a vertical line as explained in class
Sometimes need to break into more integrals.
