NOTE: Answer any five full questions
1. Design a Grit Chamber for a town having a population of 1 lakh. Assume suitable data
necessary.
(10 Marks)
2. Calculate the diameter, depth and weir loading of a primary sedimentation tank , using
the following data:
Sewage Flow 6 MLD
Detention Period 2 hrs
Overflow rate 1500 lts/m2/hr
(07 Marks)
3. Design a circular settling tank unit for a primary treatment of sewage at 12 million
litres per day. Assume suitable values of detention period and surface loading. Sketch
the unit.
(10 Marks)
4. Determine the depth of the filter, volume of the filter media and the efficiency of
treatment of a standard trickling filter, from the following data:
Quantity of settled sewage - 4.5 x 106 lts/day
BOD of raw sewage
- 150 mg/lt
Rate of Organic Loading
- 150 gms/m3/day
Rate of surface loading
- 2000 lts/m2/day
(07 Marks)
5. Design a rectangular sedimentation tank for a town having a population of 40,000
with average water supply of 250 lpcd. Check for surface loading and weir loading
rates.
(10 Marks)
6. Design a grit chamber unit to treat sewage at 12 million litres per day. Assume
horizontal flow velocity = 30 cm/sec, detention time as 60 seconds & grot content as
0.025 m3/million litre/day. Design the chamber to have grit storage of one week.
(07 Marks)
7. Determine the size of a high rate trickling filter for the following data:

Sewage flow = 5 million litres per day

Recirculation ratio = 1.5
BOD of raw sewage = 230 mg/l
BOD removal in Primary sedimentation tank = 30%
Final effluent BOD desired = 25mg/l
(10 Marks)

8. An average operating data for conventional activated sludge treatment plant is as

follows:
1) Waste water flow
= 35000 m3/day
2) Volume of Aeration Tank
= 10900 m3
3) Influent BOD
= 250 mg/l
4) Effluent BOD
= 20 mg/l
5) Mixed liquor suspended Solids (MLSS) = 2500 mg/l
6) Effluent Suspended Solids
= 30 mg/l
7) Waste Sludge Suspended Solids
= 9700 mg/l
8) Quantity of waste sludge
= 220 m3/day

c) Percentage Efficiency of BOD removal d) Sludge age
e) Sludge recirculation ratio
(07 Marks)
9. Arrive at the dimensions of an oxidation pond to treat 1 MLD of sewage received
from a suburb of a city, located in an area of hot climate, the BOD of sewage being
320 mg/lt. Check for the detention period.
(10 Marks)
10. A town discharges 100 m3/sec of sewage into a stream having a rate of flow of 1200
m3/sec during lean days, at a 5 day BOD of sewage at the given temperature being
250 mg/l. Find the amount of critical D.O. deficit and its location in the downstream
portion of the stream. Assume de-oxygenation coefficient K as 0.1 and coefficient of
self purification as 3.5. Take saturation dissolved oxygen at given temperature as 9.2
mg/l
