Exploring Rationals Algebraically Day 2: Name

This document provides exercises on identifying properties of rational functions from graphs or equations. Students are asked to identify removable discontinuities, intercepts, asymptotes, and domains for several rational functions. A mini-lesson then explains how the degrees of the numerator and denominator determine the horizontal asymptote. Students practice identifying horizontal asymptotes and labeling graphs of rational functions with relevant features.

II. Mini Lesson

The horizontal asymptote or end behavior of a rational function depends on the degrees of the
polynomials in the numerator and denominator. The degree of a polynomial with one variable is the
largest exponent that variable is raised to in an expression. For example, the quadratic expression
x 2x+2 is a 2 degree polynomial, while 4 x 3 +2 x 27 is a 3 degree polynomial. If you just have
a number like 8 without a variable, then the degree is 0.
Identify the horizontal asymptote for each function in the table below. It may help to graph the
function or plug in very large or small values for x to determine the horizontal asymptote.
