2790 Assignment3 2015

This document contains 6 fluid mechanics assignment problems related to topics like pipe flow, artesian wells, wind flow over roofs, hypodermic syringe flow, liquid manure tank nozzle flow, and jet ski water jet thrust. It provides diagrams and key parameters for each problem and asks the student to determine specific values like flow rates, pressures, speeds and forces based on given information like pipe dimensions, flow speeds, pressures, and thrust requirements. The assignment is due on February 12, 2015 and was authored by Dr. S. Tessier for their CIVL 2790 - Fluid Mechanics course in the winter of 2015.

CIVL 2790 Fluid Mechanics

Assignment 3
Due: Thursday February 12, 2015

1. Water flows through the horizontal

branching pipe shown in the figure at a rate
3
of 0.286 m /s. If viscous effects are
negligible, determine the water speed at
section (2), the pressure at section (3), and
the flowrate at section (4).

A2=65 cm2
p2 = 34.5 kPa

A3=186 cm2
V3 = 6.1 m/s
A1=929 cm2
Q1 = 0.283 m3/s
P1 = 69 kPa

2. Somewhere in the Arborg, Mb area, an uncapped artesian well continuously flows. Water flowing
from the 15 cm diameter well casing rises1.8 m above the outlet.
Determine the flowrate.

3. A 65 kmh wind (at point (1)) blowing past your house speeds up as it
flows up and over the roof. If elevation effects are negligible,
determine (a) the pressure at point (2) on the roof where the speed is
100 kmh if the pressure in the free wind stream blowing towards your
house is 101.4 kPa. Would this effect tend to push the roof down onto
the house, or would it tend to lift the roof? (b) Determine the pressure
on a window at point (3) facing the wind if the window is assumed to be
a stagnation point.

4. A hypodermic syringe is used to inject a vaccine. Most syringes exhibit some leakage of fluid product
between the wall of the syringe and the seal around the plunger. If the plunger is moved forward at
the steady rate of 20 mm/s, and if the vaccine leaks passed the plunger at 0.1 of the volume flowrate
out of the needle opening, calculate the average velocity of
the needle exit flow. The inside diameters of the syringe
and the needle are 20 mm and 0.7 mm.

5. Cylindrical concrete or steel structures are often used as

liquid manure storage tanks in Manitobas livestock industry.
Owing to the notable solids content in feces, even when
diluted with wash water, operators have to vigorously agitate
the liquid manure to break any surface crust and re-suspend
any solids that may have settled, in order to completely pump
out the manure in fields. This is accomplished by recirculating
the manure into the storage, and ejecting the manure through
a nozzle attached to the top of the facilitys wall. Such a
nozzle is attached to a vertical pipe anchored on the outside
of the tank and discharges liquid manure (assume water
properties) into the atmosphere above the liquid manure
surface, in accordance the figure to the right. When the
3
discharge is 0.1 m /sec, the gage pressure at the flange is 40
kPa. Determine the vertical component of the anchoring force
required to hold the nozzle in place. The nozzle has a weight
3
of 200 N, and the volume of water in the nozzle is 0.012 m .
Is the anchoring force directed upward or downward?

6. The trust developed to propel the Jet Ski shown here is a result of
water pumped through the vehicle and exiting as a high-speed
water jet. For the condition shown in the figure, what flowrate is
needed to produce a 1330 N thrust? Assume the inlet an outlet jets
of water are free jets of water.
