Trans Basic Operation:

The A500 (also called 42RH) is a RWD 4speed unit with TCC. Pressure rise is controlled by mechanical TV on all models. The
A500 uses a output shaft mounted governor
to control the 1-2 and 2-3 up and downshifts.
TCC and 4th are controlled by independently
by valve body mounted solenoids.
The 42RE-44RE are RWD 4-speed units with
TCC. Pressure rise is still controlled by mechanical TV on all models. The mechanical
governor was replaced by a governor solenoid mounted on the valve body for road
speed signal for up and downshifts. TCC and
4th gear are still controlled electrically by use
of valve body mounted solenoid.
Dodge applications 1996up are RE series,
while Jeep applications used both RE and RH
models starting in 1993. By 1996, all Jeep
models also used only the RE series.

Temp
Sensor

The TCC, OD, and Governor solenoids are all fed

from common 12v supply, and each are ground controlled independently by the vehicle computer.
The temp sensor and Governor Pressure Sensor
(Transducer) share common 5v supply. The Governor Pressure Sensor is a feedback device used by
the computer to monitor the actual value of governor
pressure present in the valve body. The computer
can then adjust the electrical commands to the Governor Solenoid to achieve desired governor pressure.
Note: 1st design models use a separate temperature
sensor mounted to the TCC and OD solenoid
bracket. On the 2nd design the temperature sensor
is combined inside the transducer.
Starting in 2000 the range of the temperature sensor
was increased for improved accuracy. The 1st and
2nd designs are not interchangeable.
