nuclear fuel. This refutes the statement being circulated that this plant was
completely built but has never generated a single watt of electricity.
BNPP was about 98% complete in February 1984, and in June 1985
public hearings were set to be conducted for the Operating License of BNPP as
requirement prior to initial nuclear fuel loading to the nuclear reactor. This is in
preparation for the commercial operation of the plant.
The IAEA as the worlds advisory body to utilities on the safe operation of
a nuclear power plants has inspected BNPP twice, the IAEA Operational Safety
Analysis Review Team (OSART) I and II (July 1984 and February 1985,
respectively). Although it identified issues and made recommendations, the IAEA
said the plants construction met international standards. After the second
inspection, the IAEA said that the plant was ready to receive fuel and begin startup testing for its commercial operation.
C. Nature of the Company: Power Industry (Generation)
D. Observation:
The plant is named Makban because of it is located between mountains
Makiling and Banahaw. In our way to the said power plant, I have observed that
there were so many pipes all over the places which is said to be carrying water.
They were so strict on the time and schedule. Inside the plant, safety and
neatness are strictly observed. The facilities inside are well maintained and their
employees are capable and well trained.
E. Reflections on a specific concept and theory:
The pipes carry water for the plant to use for the steam. Inside the plant
they told us that they actually have a total of three plants inside the vicinity. The
geothermal power plant utilizes heat energy of earth to generate steam where
the generated steam is utilized to rotate the turbine to produce electricity.
Lesson Learned:
During our Educational Tour, I have learned that:
Safety must be the priority when working in the field. It is important because of
the nature of our field, which involves high voltages, short circuit currents, faulty
wiring and other similar occurrences. That is why we should always wear
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
This educational tour is a way for us students to learn how the generation of
electricity from coal, geothermal, nuclear and water works. On how the
distribution of electricity and how they make protective devices.
The SCADA is an advance way on how to detect faults across the transmission
and distribution system.
That being an Electrical Engineer is not hard as long as you enjoy your working
environment, because I can see the Engineers weve came from that they enjoy
what they are doing and they are very happy. Since Im an electrical engineering
student it is helpful for me to see what is in my field and not just theories that my
professors are teaching.
