This assignment is in two parts. First fill out the table. Then use the information in the table to answer the journal
question.
Hint: Use the information on the later pages in this activity to help you fill in the table.
Part I: Prewriting
A "T-chart" helps you see two ideas side by side.
Gender roles are the kinds of jobs and responsibilities that society expects women and men to do. Filling in
the T-chart will help you think about how gender roles have changed since the days of colonial America. On
one side of the chart, list at least four different jobs that women did in the past. On the other side, list some
jobs they do now.
This section is worth eight points.

1. Complete the following sentence: The most important constitutional right that Americans have is . . .
2. Why do you think so? List at least three reasons why that right is central to the daily life of an American.
It might be best to write only three to five different ideas here so that your paragraph isn't too long.

4. These ideas will become the body sentences of your paragraph. What is the best order for these ideas?
Number them in the order you think they should go. Don't worry if you need to reword some of them. And it's
O.K. to leave out an idea if it doesn't seem to fit, but you need at least three examples. (1 point)
5. You need a topic sentence now. Is there a word or idea that describes all of your experiences? Maybe
something like this: My experience on the Trail of Tears made me angry. Or, the Trail of Tears was a terrible
experience. (1 point)
Writing Assignment
Write a complete paragraph that describes your experiences on the Trail of Tears. Use the topic sentence
and support you completed in the pre-writing section. Add a conclusion to finish your thoughts. Be sure to
use lots of good detail. Of course, if you need to add other ideas, you can do that, too.
