Romance in the workplace is rife and

most managers dont mind, says survey
PEOPLE involved in an office romances will
be pleased to hear that the stigma of workplace relationships is dissipating.
Almost two-thirds (64 per cent) of managers dont mind workplace relationships if
they are kept professional, a survey has
revealed.
Research by the Institute of Leadership
and Management with more than 1,000 UK
workers and managers has revealed that love
at work is not the forbidden fruit it once was.
This is fortunate for the 41 per cent of respondents who admitted to smooching with
an office colleague.
And the enlightened attitude of bosses may
be the right one as the research also shows
that 37 per cent of respondents went on to
become a couple after a workplace tryst and
27 per cent of relationships that start at work
end in marriage or civil partnerships.

The workplace is definitely a good place

to meet someone after all, you spend most
of your time there, one respondent told the

survey. I met someone from another department at a Christmas party some years ago
and we are due to marry in March. You cant

help where you meet the right person.

However, employees remain cautious with
21 per cent claiming colleagues would disapprove of a relationship, prompting 30 per
cent to keep liaisons secret. And abstinence
may still be the wisest course of action as
one in 10 said their office romance had negatively affected their work life.
Single people looking for a fling take note,
a third of workplace relationships start at
social events outside of work, while 36 per
cent begin in the office itself. The majority of
affairs (70 per cent) were with colleagues at
the same organisational level. More than one
in 10 were with a junior member of staff and
9 per cent admitted having a fling with their
boss. And the number of future hook ups
may increase as two-thirds of workers said
they would consider a workplace romance.
Charles Elvin, ILM chief executive, said:
Our survey shows that workplace romances
are inevitable and not as destructive to
careers as people fear. Employers may want
to think twice before vetoing love at work, or
they risk forcing staff to hide their relationships, creating a culture of secrecy and
deceit.
The key is how employers handle workplace relationships; if organisations and
their managers set clear guidance or policies
with boundaries, then certain situations can
be prevented.
