One year's residence at Harvard and a program of eight courses, to include three 200level half-courses.
2.
As part of its annual assessment of students progress, the faculty conducts a review of each
student at the end of the second term of study in the department. The review includes the
students performance in courses and a self-evaluation of academic progress, goals, and
related activities (workshops, attendance at talks, etc.). This determines whether further
course work will be required for the M.A., and in exceptional cases, whether the student
should continue in the program. The same evaluation determines what credit is allowed for
previous graduate work done at other universities.
Two full years of course work (16 half-courses, 8 beyond the M.A.). Students
entering the program with Masters degrees from other institutions may apply, at the
end of the first year, for transfer of credit for a maximum of four half-courses from
their previous programs.
The 16 required half-courses include:
a.
One half-course in the history of the Spanish language.
b.
Literature in Portuguese, at the 100 or 200 level.
c. Third Language Requirement:
1. Students specializing in the medieval and Golden Age
periods must take an additional half-course in Latin
beyond the beginning level. This requirement can be
met with Latin 3, 3m, 4, 4m or higher.
2 Students specializing in any of the other four subfields
must take one literature half-course in a third language
(i.e. exclusive of Spanish and Portuguese), a language
related to the students specialization (e.g. French, Italian,
Catalan, Quechua, Nahuatl, Latin, etc.). Upon the recommendation
Of the student's advisor, certain other options (e.g. German,
Greek, or reading courses) may fulfill this requirement.

Requirements for the Ph.D. Degree in Hispanic Literatures with a Portuguese Minor
1.
2.
Fourteen courses in Spanish, including the required courses History of the Language
(Spanish 201).
Four courses in Portuguese. At least two of these should be graduate
seminars (200 level); the other two may be advanced courses at the 100 level.

The remaining requirements and expectations are identical to those for students
focusing solely on Hispanic literatures. The thesis topic, however, must address
significant issues from both the Hispanic and the Portuguese (Brazilian and
Lusophone) literatures.
EXAMINATIONS
Written Language Proficiency Examinations
Incoming students take a one-hour written examination during the week preceding the first
day of classes of the fall term. The examination tests students ability to translate accurately
and idiomatically, both from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English.
First Year Exam
The First Year Exam assesses the ability to use basic knowledge of literary history and critical
concepts in the analysis of texts.
In early April, the DGS will invite a faculty member to chair each students examination
committee of three professors. Chairs will ask two colleagues to join the committee.
All first year students submit to their exam committees a short list of standard texts with
which they are familiar, and which represent all areas of Hispanic and Latin American
literatures.
Students will then propose 3-4 questions to their committees by mid-April, and submit them
also to the DGS and Graduate Coordinator. The deadline will allow time for consultation
and revision with the exam committee.
The exam takes place during the May reading period. It consists of an oral presentation,
about 20 minutes, followed by a session of questions and answers during which students may
be asked about any text on their list. The purpose of the exam is to perform a literary critical
reading of a particular text, with references to others on the list. Students may refer to written
notes, but not read from them. The emphasis is on creative and responsible interpretation.
All faculty members from Spanish and Portuguese are welcome to attend the first year exams
of all students.
For those students who do not already hold an M.A. degree in Spanish, the First Year Exam
(along with the evaluation of performance during the year) serves as the basis for awarding
the Harvard A.M. degree.
The Departments Student Services Office coordinates all exams. Sample exams from
previous years are available for study and practice. The student is notified in writing of the
results of oral and written examinations.
Students are examined on all periods of the Hispanic literary tradition. For examination
purposes the field is divided into six areas, three in Spanish Peninsular literature (Medieval,
16th-17th Centuries, 18th-20th Centuries) and three in Latin- American literature (Colonial,
19th Century, 20th Century).
For the Ph.D. examinations, each student picks one of the six areas as the Special Field; the
remaining five areas are covered in the non-specialized parts of the examination.
Format of the Minor Field Examinations.
Students have the option to choose their own timing for examinations in their five minor
fields. They can request to be tested during their preferred dates in one or more particular
field(s) by the area specialist or specialists in the Sections.
Each minor exam consists of three parts, the written parts together last 2 hours:
1) identification and commentary of a text or texts chosen by the examining faculty
member;
2) response to one of three essay questions; among the choices is at least one
of the questions drafted by the student.
3) an oral development of written responses.
In preparation for the essay portion of a minor exam, the student drafts three questions with
guidance from the faculty specialist. On a date agreed upon by the student and the faculty
member, the written exam is administered.
Exams will be read and evaluated by the examiner and one more professor. An oral exam to
develop the written part will be scheduled during the office hours of the examiner, with
participation of the second faculty reader.
This "exam on demand" procedure is intended to mitigate the pressures of combining all five
minor areas into one day-long examination, while maintaining the rigor of coverage in all
areas represented in our Section. Students will have passed all five minor area exams by
October of their third year, and will finish with their major area exam, including the
presentation of a proposal for the dissertation, by May of the third year.
Reading Lists for each examination area are attached. In each area, two reading lists appear:
one for specialists, and one for non-specialists. For the area of specialization, students read a
minimum of 75 works. For each of the five non-specialized areas, a minimum of 15 works
7
are read(5x15=75). The minimum total for the combined six areas of the examination is 150
works.
Each list consists of a group of required readings and a shorter group of recommended
readings. In the specialist lists, required readings number about 50; in the non-specialist lists,
they number 12. Students may select the remaining titles (25 for the specialist field, 3 for
each non-specialist field) from the list of recommended readings for the field. Alternatively,
they may choose texts not listed, in consultation with a faculty specialist in the field, to reflect
their particular interests. Each student must submit the approved recommended reading list
to the appropriate faculty member one month before the date of examination, and submitted
to the DGS.
The revised reading lists do not contain recommended secondary readings. For assistance in
selecting critical and literary-historical readings, students should consult with a faculty
specialist in each field.
Students whose work involves specialization in more than one of the examination areas
should consult with faculty specialists in both areas to determine how the examination
process can best serve their interests and research needs.
Students are encouraged to formulate their own questions for both the minor area exams and
for the major area, as a vehicle for developing creative readings of the required and additional
readings. For each of the minor areas, students prepare three essay questions and submit
them for consultation and elaboration to the faculty specialist for that area. In the major area,
students should prepare from 8 to 10 questions (some will ideally be related to thesis
proposal) and submit them, as well, to the specialist. Drafts of the questions should be
prepared a month before the exam.
In both the "minor" and the "major" exam areas, faculty may add their own question(s) as
options for students to answer. Faculty will also choose 2-4 literary passages from which
students will choose one for identification and commentary in minor areas, and two in the
major area.
Format of Special Field Examination
A written examination of four hours will be followed by an oral examination of 2 hours.
Students will write two essays, choosing one question from each of two groups of questions.
They will also identify and comment on one of two or three literary passages. At the oral
portion of the exam, the student will present a draft of the Dissertation Prospectus (see
departmental guidelines for its preparation). The examination committee for the Special
Field Examination consists of the members of the students Dissertation Committee. If one
of the three readers is not a member of the Harvard faculty, a member of the Hispanic
Literatures faculty will substitute for the Special Field portion of the General Examination.
For the Ph.D. in Hispanic Literatures with a Minor in Portuguese, Brazilian and
Lusophone Literatures:
General examination is based on a reading list of 24 Portuguese texts compiled by the
Director of Graduate Studies in Portuguese. Reading lists of Spanish texts remain the same
for all students. A two-hour component of Portuguese will be added to the second part of
8
the written exam, that is, to the Special Field Examination. Students will be expected to have
basic speaking skills in Portuguese. The rest of the exam does not change. One or more
members of the Portuguese, Brazilian and Lusophone literature faculty sit on the Special
Field Examination committee.
