Chapter I
Introduction:
Man and the environment, ecosystem, Environmental Components: Structure and composition of
the, Atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and Lithosphere- biogeochemical cycles, biodiversity
and its conservation, natural resources.
Chapter II
Environment pollution:
Meaning - types - definitions for different pollution parameters - different types of pollutants - air,
water, noise, land and ratio active pollutants.
UNIT - 02
Chapter III
Industrial air pollution:
Industrial air pollution management: air pollution meteorology (Generation, transportation and
dispersion of air pollutants). Outlines of industrial air pollution control. Selection, design and
performance analysis of air pollution control equipment: gravity settling chambers, air cyclones,
ESPs, filters and wet scrubbers.
Chapter IV
Control of Industrial air pollution:
Dust control and abatement measures in mines; role of green belts. Control devices for gaseous
pollutants with special emphasis on adsorption, absorption, mass transfer, condensation, and
combustion. Indoor air pollution control.

Chapter V
Industrial Water Pollution:
Causes of industrial water pollution, ecological effects of water pollution. Industrial water pollution
management: Wastewater treatment processes - importance and scope.
Chapter VI
Biological treatment of Waste water:
Definition - Concept - biological treatment Bacterial population dynamics, kinetics of biological
growth and its applications to biological treatment, process design relationships and analysis,
determination of kinetic coefficients, activated sludge process. Design, trickling filter design
considerations, advanced treatment processes.

Industrial Noise Pollution:
Sources - effect and impact - causes of noise pollution, effects of noise pollution, control of noise
pollution at source - design of building - protection equipment - job rotation - exposure protection -

hearing protection - Sound absorption, Acoustic barrier, Vibration Isolation, Vibration damping,
Muffling, personal protector and green belt Chapter VIII
Noise pollution management:
Mines, Washeries, Power plants, Fertilizer plants, Cement plants, etc. Ground vibration and air
blast, Health effects; Psycho-acoustics, effects of noise on health, special noise environments:
Infra-sound, ultrasound, impulsive sound and sonic boom; noise instrumentation and monitoring
procedure.
UNIT - 05
Chapter IX
Hazardous Waste Management:
Hazardous waste classification and rules, management strategies. Treatment methods component separation, chemical and biological treatment, incineration, solidification and
stabilization, and disposal methods. Radioactive pollutants, causes of radioactive pollution, effects
of radioactive pollution, control of radioactive pollution.
Chapter X
Solid Waste Management:
Soil pollutants, causes of soil pollution, ecological effects of soil pollution, control of soil pollution.
Solid waste, scope of solid waste management, recycle, reuse, recovery concepts. Fertilizer,
plastics, paper and pulp, inorganic acids, petroleum and petrochemicals, recovery of materials
from process effluents. Sanitary land fills design.
UNIT - 06
Chapter XI
Environmental Measurement:
Sampling and analysis-dust monitor-gas analyzer, particles size analyzer-lux meter-pH meter-gas
chromatograph-atomic absorption spectrometer.
Chapter XII
Public awareness:
Standards and legislation - pollution control board-laws. EIA, EIS and EMP - Environmental
education - Background, Goals, Objectives, Guided principles
