V4 FTA Method PDF

This document provides guidance on working with Functional Tolerancing and Annotation (FTA) data migrated from CATIA V4 models into CATIA V5. It describes which FTA elements can be migrated and how, and how to view the migrated data and generate 2D views in drawings from the 3D FTA information. Key points covered include the FTA migration rules and limitations, how to visualize migrated FTA data in CATIA V5, and how to create "Views from 3D" on drawings to project 3D FTA annotations onto 2D sheets. The appendix describes how to view FTA elements that were not migrated.

Viewing Non Migrated Data

Introduction
The purpose of this method is to:
Provide best practices for Viewing FTA information embedded in CATIA V4
model files.
Provide best practises for creating 2D generative drafting views using FTA
information embedded in CATIA V4 model files.
Describe the Rules, Limitations and any prerequisites that and required to
perform the processes
Detail any relevant CATSettings where applicable.

FTA Migration Key Points

Migration is performed using a Copy-Paste operation. You should paste the Version 4
annotation set at the level of the product containing the geometry.
Version 4 Tolerancing data is migrated for parts only, not for assemblies.
To migrate Version 4 Functional Dimensioning & Tolerancing data to Version 5, a Version 5
Functional Tolerancing & Annotation license is required. Either FTA DT1 or FT1
Not all Version 4 data can be migrated to Version 5, and sometimes, migrated data can be
invalid.
If an annotation set already exists in Version 5, Version 4 data will be pasted to this existing
annotation set. In this case, make sure that the parent standard is the same in Version 4 as
in Version 5; otherwise the copy will not be performed.
If there is no existing annotation set in Version 5, a new annotation set will be created. In
this case, the Version 4 standard will be used.
In the case of several Version 4 annotation sets within a Version 4 model, you will either
need to merge FD&T data within a single Version 5 annotation set, or split the Version 4
model in several Version 4 models, containing each a single annotation set.
Version 4 Functional Dimensioning & Tolerancing windows are migrated as Version 5
captures

TOLERANCING STANDARD

Defines conventional standard options:

Default Standard At Creation
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

ASME American Society for Mechanical Engineers

ASME3D
American Society for Mechanical Engineers
ANSI American National Standards Institute
JIS
Japanese Industrial Standard
ISO
International Organization for Standardization

By default, the ISO standard is selected.

ANNOTATIONS IN SPECIFICATION TREE

Defines the annotations in specification tree options:

Under Geometric Feature nodes
Defines that 3D annotations should be displayed under the geometric feature nodes in the
specification tree. This lets you view 3D annotations under the Part Design or Generative Shape
Design feature nodes to which they are applied.
By default, this option is not selected.
Under View/Annotation Plane nodes
Defines that 3D annotations should be displayed under the view/annotation plane nodes in the
specification tree. This lets you view 3D annotations under the view node to which they are
linked.
By default, this option is not selected.
Under Annotations Set node
Defines that 3D annotations should be displayed under the annotation set node in the
specification tree, available only if Under View/Annotation Plane nodes is selected.
By default, this option is selected.

VIEW FROM 3D

Keep layout and dress-up of 2D extracted annotations

Select this option if you want the layout and dress-up applied to 2D extracted annotations to be
preserved when updating a view from 3D (Functional Tolerancing and Annotation workbench).

2D dress-up modifications are kept when updating design changes from 3D.

Associativity of the annotations or their leader with the 3D geometry is taken into account.

Associativity between annotations is taken into account.

By default, this option is not selected.

Generate 2D geometry
Select this option if you want to generate 2D geometry (i.e. wireframe and 2D points) when generating a
view from 3D from a layout view (2D Layout for 3D Design workbench).

By default, this option is selected.

Generate red cross on annotation

Select this option if you want red cross mark to be displayed for any annotation or dimension with a leader
linked to hidden geometry (i.e. 3D geometry which is not visible in a 2D view) when generating view from
3D
((Functional Tolerancing and Annotation workbench).

By default, this option is selected.

Viewing V4 FTA information in CATIAV5 - 1 of 3

This Scenario outlines the process to view FTA data with an FTA license
1.

Create a New CATProduct. When prompted

enter the part number of the V4 model you are
about to view.
Note: You cannot use the exact string. e.g if the V4 model has a
part number of WG1509-0113-101-Support you could use
WG1509-0113-101 in the product part number field but you
cannot use WG1509-0113-101-Support

2.

Insert the Existing V4 FTA Model into the Product

by Right clicking on the Product Components Existing Component Browse and select the
model

3.

Select the Product Functional Tolerancing &

Annotation Workbench from the Start menu.
START MECHANICAL DESIGN - ..

4.

Select the 3D Visualization Icon from the

Visualization toolbar.
The Annotation Set Switch window appears.
Select Enable All and OK
The Annotation becomes Visible

Generating drafting Views from 3D on a 2D drawing Sheet - 1 of 3

This Scenario outlines the process to create 2D Views by projecting the 3D FTA data onto a
drawing sheet with an FTA license
1. Repeat the Steps from Slides 10, 11 and 12
so that the FTA information is visible.
2. Expand the Specification Graph so that the
*TOLPx branch is visible.

15

3.
4.

Right click the *TOLPx branch as select COPY

Right click the Product and select PASTE

5.

You may encounter a Partial Migration Panel if some of

the Data could not be migrated.
Any Data that is not migrated is added to a dedicated
capture in the specification tree. (See Appendix)

Generating drafting Views from 3D on a 2D drawing Sheet - 1 of 3

7.

To Create a View the will show the 3D FTA annotation the Drafting View type
of View from 3D is used. Select the icon
8. Swap back to the 3D window or tile horizontally the screen. Select from the
specification tree the first View in the Views node
9. A Preview of the view will appear, drag the green frame to position the view
then select the white sheet to place it.
10. Repeat steps 7 thro 9 for the other Views until you have created them all
NOTE:
Remember these views may not be orthogonal as
you can see below

19

Appendix 1 of 2
How to View FTA information that was not Migrated

When the *TOLx is pasted onto the top level product a message may appear informing
the user of any FTA that could not be migrated.
This NON migrated data is stored in a dedicated CAPTURE in the specification tree
called Non Migrated data of *TOLx
To View this Data Right Click on the Non Migrated Capture node and select
Display Capture

In the example below it is the Chamfer Dimension that is not Migrated

20

Appendix 2 of 2
How to View FTA information that was not Migrated

When the drawing is created the FTA that was not migrated will not appear in the views
generate by the View From 3D function. The missing annotations will need to be
added manually using standard V5 drafting techniques
