Welcome to MASSIVE

Thank you very much for installing MASSIVE! This new software instrument combines
a unique synthesis engine with unparalleled ease of use and most of all, a focus on
expressive sound design and creation. MASSIVE is your solution for punchy bass lines
and cutting leads, through to beautiful atmospheric pads and funky rhythmic grooves.
Also, MASSIVE uses the KoreSound format and thus provides perfect integration with
NATIVE INSTRUMENTS KORE.
For detailed information about using MASSIVE please refer to the products manual.
You might also want to check the README.TXT file placed in your MASSIVE installation
folder for a documentation of the most recent changes.

Getting Started
Here we will provide you some first
steps that will get you up and running
with MASSIVE. For more detailed information and examples please check
the MASSIVE manual and the separate Setup Guide.
The setup procedure (discussed on
this page) only applies to the standalone mode, all remaining steps are
identical in both stand-alone and
plug-in mode.

Full Version and Demo Version

After installation, your copy of
MASSIVE needs activation with the
NATIVE INSTRUMENTS Service
Center. MASSIVE will run in demo
mode until activation. If you already
activated MASSIVE and installed an
update, you dont need to repeat the
process.
When starting MASSIVE before activating it, a window will ask whether
you want to do this now.
If you choose to activate your installation, the NATIVE INSTRUMENTS
Service Center is launched. It will
guide you through the activation
process during which you have to
enter your serial number. The serial
number is included in the package
of MASSIVE (box version) or in an
e-mail (download version).
If you do not own MASSIVE you
can click on "Buy" and use our locator to find a dealer in your area or
buy it in the NATIVE INSTRUMENTS
online shop.
If you dont have a serial number,
you can use the demo mode. You
will not be able to save sounds, and
recalling of settings within a host is
also disabled. The application will
also quit automatically after 30
minutes. All features of the sound
engine as well as the library sounds
are available so that you can test the
full potential of MASSIVE.

More information about activation

and the Service Center is available
in the separate Setup Guide that was
also installed. Note that the Service
Center also conveniently provides access to the most recent update of
MASSIVE.

Computer Setup
After installing MASSIVE, doubleclick on the MASSIVE icon in the
Application folder (Mac OS X) or
click the corresponding Start menu
entry (Windows XP). Upon first start
you are presented with a dialog box
that contains your Audio and MIDI
settings.
In the future, you will need to check
the Audio and MIDI settings every
time you install a new soundcard
or MIDI device. You can access the
settings from the File menu in the
MASSIVE window. Also, if you should
ever face the problem that there is
no audio output or no MIDI input,
these settings are a good place to
start troubleshooting.

Soundcard Setup

3. Choose your output device. Most

soundcards nowadays have drivers
specifically written for them. We recommend using those drivers whenever possible.
Caution for PC users: A generic
driver like ASIO DirectX or
ASIO Multimedia will not
give as good a response as a
specific driver for your card.
If available, choose the driver
name that includes the model
number or manufacturer of
your soundcard or audio interface.

Routing Setup

If your soundcard has multiple output capabilities, here is where you

configure those. If not then skip this
step. Most standard soundcards have
just one stereo out. MASSIVE will use
that, provided the soundcard was set
up correctly (see above).

MIDI Setup
1. First choose your interface type.
ASIO and CoreAudio are your best
options as they have the potential for
the lowest possible latency. This is
the delay from the soundcard input
to the soundcard output.
2. Select the desired sample rate.
Make sure its supported by your audio interface we suggest starting
out with 44100, because virtually all
sound cards support that rate.

If you have a MIDI device installed

(USB is most common for MIDI these
days), here is the setup for that.
Upon starting MASSIVE for the first
time, your MIDI device will be off.
To begin using it, you need to turn

the input on. If you cant see any device listed in the window, then this
means MASSIVE has not detected
your MIDI device. Please make sure
that it is turned on and plugged into
a free MIDI or USB port. It could also
mean that the device driver is not correctly installed. Please see your MIDI
devices documentation for
further

information.
When all is done, close the dialog and
start using MASSIVE.

Load and play

First lets take a look at the Browser
and see how to find and load a sound
from the built-in sound library. Switch
to the Browser View by clicking the
Browser button towards the right side
of the Navigation Bar at the top. You
can also press F2 on your keyboard.

load any patch from the Search

Results List by simply doubleclicking on its name
Using the Attributes is a very convenient and powerful way to quickly find
the sound you want to use!
Now that you have loaded a sound,
try playing some notes with your
MIDI keyboard and you should hear
the sound. Try modifying the output
with one of the Macro Control knobs,
arranged in a row 1-8 just above the
Browser: while holding down a MIDI
key and sustaining a sound, click on
one of the Macro Control knobs and
drag the mouse upwards. The Macro
Control knob will follow the movement, and you should hear some effect, depending on what the Macro
Control is assigned to in the particular
patch you are using.

Youll see the Database View of the

Browser at the lower left, and the
Search Result List to the right. Above,
you will see the eight Macro Control
as well as the Master Volume Control
When you first open the Browser View,
the Search Result List at the lower
right will show the list of all sounds
available in MASSIVE. Now lets try
using the Attributes at the lower left of
the Database View to limit the Search

the Search Results List will update

active Attributes

How are these Macro Controls affecting the sound? Lets change to
the Synth View now to get an idea
of how this works. Click the Synth
Button towards the right side of the
Navigation Bar to switch to the Synth
View (or press F3 on your computers
keyboard). You will see the same eight
Macro Control knobs 1-8 in the lower
right corner of the window. However,
in the Synth View you can see how
each control is modifying the sound,
and you can create your own control
assignments. For example, in the image below the small yellow numbers
beneath the control knobs indicate
that the knobs are being controlled
by Macro Controls 1 and 2, respectively.

yellow ring around the control. For example, in the image above we can see
that the influence of Macro Control 2
on the Intensity knob is greater than
that of the green modulation source
indicated by the numeral 6. The different color reflects that this modulation source is not a Macro Control, but
an LFO. The blue 2, finally, denotes
an envelope generator.
How can these modulation routings
be controlled? Have a look at the
Macro Controls in the Synth Views
lower right corner. Beside each control you will find a small cross, the
Modulation handle. You can click it
with the mouse: a small number will
be attached to your mouse, according
to the Macro Control you selected.
Now click into one of the Modulation
Slots the small boxes below the main
controls. The number attached to your
mouse will vanish and appear instead
within the box. Now the Macro Control
is assigned to that parameter.

However, turning the Macro Control

will not show any effect as you first
need to adjust the modulation depth,
i.e. the amount by which the Macro
Control modifies the parameters
value. Click the modulation slot you
inserted the number into with the
mouse and drag the mouse upwards.
A ring will appear around the parameter, indicating the Macro Controls influence. If you now change the Macro
Controls value, this parameter will follow the change.
