Operation Theory
The Wheatley Bag Type Expansion Tanks contain a flexible bladder
which separates the water from the air cushion in the tank. The tank
may be precharged to the minimum preasure of the system. Upon
operation of the system, the water expands due to heating and begins
to fill the felxible bladder in the tank. As the bladder fills with water,
the air cushion is compressed causing a rise in pressure in the
system. Through proper sizing of the expansion tank, this pressure
increase is controlled and kept within the accepted range of the
system. The inclusion of the bladder in the expansion tank as a
barrier between the air and water prevents any loss of precharge due
to absorption.
Sizing Procedure
Job:
1. Enter Total System Water Content
_________________________ gal.
2. a. Enter Minimum System Temperature
_________________________ F
b. Enter Maximum System Temperature
_________________________ F
c. Enter Expansion Factor From Table 1
_________________________ gal.
3. Calculate Expanded Water Volume
(Multiply line by line 2c)
4. a. Enter Minimum System Pressure (P1)
_________________________ psig
b. Enter maximum System Pressure (Po)
_________________________ psig
c. Enter acceptance Factor From Table 2
5. Calculate Total Tank Volume Required
_________________________ gal.
(Divide line 3 by line 4c)
6. Select Tank from Product Data Table--Side 1
