Operation Theory
The Wheatley Bag Type Expansion Tanks contain a flexible bladder
which separates the water from the air cushion in the tank. The tank
may be precharged to the minimum preasure of the system. Upon
operation of the system, the water expands due to heating and begins
to fill the felxible bladder in the tank. As the bladder fills with water,
the air cushion is compressed causing a rise in pressure in the
system. Through proper sizing of the expansion tank, this pressure
increase is controlled and kept within the accepted range of the
system. The inclusion of the bladder in the expansion tank as a
barrier between the air and water prevents any loss of precharge due
to absorption.

Installation and Start-up Procedure

1. Inspect tank for damage which may have occured during shipping.
2. Bladder Type Tanks are shipped with a factory precharge of 12
psig. Check precharge using an accurate pressure gauge at the
charging valve. Pressure should be within +3 lbs. depending on the
ambient temperature.
3. If any damage exists or precharge is not acceptable, contact
Wheatley immediately. DO NOT INSTALL UNIT.
4. To install tank, set unit in place and connect system piping to
system connection on tank. DO NOT REMOVE BOTTOM PLUG OR
LOOSEN NUT ON COVER PLATE. Bottom plug and cover plate are
to be removed only in case of bladder failure. Removing bottom plug
or loosening cover plate nut will result in loss of factory precharge and
voids warranty.
5. Units must be charged to minimum system precharge up to 40 PSI
before system is filled with water. All systems over 40 PSI should be
filled by adding 1/4 bladder volume of water before charging over 40
psig to the desired PSI working pressure. Any alteration in factory
precharge should be completed just prior to filling the system with
water.
6. Leak check all connections including cover plate seal during
adjustment of precharge and initial operation of unit.
7. When filling system with water, any values in line leading to tank
must be open to insure that any trapped air in tank is displaced by the
water. Be sure to follow manufacturers startup procedures for other
components in the system.
