Title: Converter Control for Power hardware in the Loop (PHIL) Simulation
Prof. Arindam
Ghosh
Abstract: In Power Hardware-in-the-Loop (PHIL) simulations, a digitally simulated power system which is
run in near real-time is interfaced to a real piece of hardware, usually called the hardware under test (HuT).
PHIL provides a safe environment to run different type of tests which may be expensive, impossible or risky
to be practically examined. A Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) with high speed, parallel processors and
several input and output cards can be used to interface a simulated network to a real world hardware.
Stable operation of the system is the most important challenge of a PHIL implementation. Also, accuracy
of the results is another important issue. An ideal interface between the simulated network and HuT has
a unity gain and does not impose any distortion to the system. However, in practical cases even if a PHIL
simulation is stable, the imperfection of the interface and computation time of the simulator will cause
some erroneous results. In this talk, the stability and accuracy aspects of PHIL implementations will be
presented when a switching converter is used as an amplifier.
Biography: Arindam Ghosh obtained his Ph.D. from University of Calgary, Canada in 1983. He joined IIT
Kanpur in 1985 as an Assistant Professor and became a Professor in 1991. From May 2006 to November
2013, he was with Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane. Current he is a Research Academic
Professor at Curtin University, Perth. His current research focus is Renewable Energy and Distributed
Generation, Smart Green Grids and Power Electronics Applications to Power Systems. He is a Fellow of IEEE,
Indian National Academy of Engineering and Institution of Engineers (India).

Title: Predictive Control - The Powerful Method to Control Power Converters and Drives in the Future
Abstract: Up to now the control of electrical power using power converters has been based on the
principle of mean value, using pulse width modulation with linear controllers in a cascaded structure.
Recent research works have demonstrated that it is possible to use Predictive Control to control electrical
energy with the use of power converters, without using modulators and linear controllers. This is a new
Prof. Ralph Kennel approach that will have a strong impact on control in power electronics in coming decades.
Biography: Ralph M. Kennel was born in 1955 at Kaiserslautern (Germany). In 1979 he got his diploma
degree and in 1984 his Dr.-Ing. (Ph.D.) degree from the University of Kaiserslautern.
From 1983 to 1999 he worked on several positions with Robert BOSCH GmbH (Germany). Until 1997 he was
responsible for the development of servo drives. Dr. Kennel was one of the main supporters of VECON and
SERCOS interface, two multi-company development projects for a microcontroller and a digital interface
especially dedicated to servo drives. Furthermore he took actively part in the definition and release of new
standards with respect to CE marking for servo drives.
Between 1997 and 1999 Dr. Kennel was responsible for Advanced and Product Development of Fractional
Horsepower Motors in automotive applications. His main activity was preparing the introduction of
brushless drive concepts to the automotive market.
From 1994 to 1999 Dr. Kennel was appointed Visiting Professor at the University of Newcastle-uponTyne (England, UK). From 1999 - 2008 he was Professor for Electrical Machines and Drives at Wuppertal
University (Germany). Since 2008 he is Professor for Electrical Drive systems and Power Electronics at
Technische Universitaet Muenchen (Germany). His main interests today are: Sensorless control of AC drives,
predictive control of power electronics and Hardware-in-the-Loop systems.
Dr. Kennel is a Senior Member of IEEE, a Fellow of IET (former IEE) and a Chartered Engineer in the UK.

Title: Object oriented Modeling & simulation of Power Electronic Systems
Prof. V. V. Sastry
Abstract: Knowing the interdisciplinary nature of Power Electronics as an area, the emphasis in modeling
and simulation is attempted using the simulators like Saber ( from Synopsis) and DYMOLA ( from 3DS)
simulators. Models are built using languages like MAST or Modelica, so that the models can be version
controlled and model libraries could be built and reused with encryption to maintain the integrity as well
as the IP. MAST Models built are based on the laws of conservation for all analog systems and are physics
based and have a graphical front end. Post processing, analysis and report preparation are the additional
features of Saber, which helps in the productivity of the model developers. Much of the work presented is
based on the work done at IIT- Madras. Today one finds its student version called Saber RD.
Modelica / DYMOLA has all the best features of Saber and is affordable by universities in India and abroad.
Power electronics simulation built at Iowa state university, Ames, USA is based on this tool.
The reason why these are chosen for this talk is purely based on the authors experience in the field of
modeling and simulation and is not any recommendation of these tools.
