Martina the Beautiful Cockroach

Deedy, C., & Austin, M. (2008). Martina, the beautiful


cockroach a Cuban folktale. Atlanta, Ga.: Peachtree. Martina
was a beautiful cockroach, she has become of age to get
married. Her family have all come up with wonderful gifts for
her upcoming engagement. But her Abuela gives her the best
gift of all, advice. Martina was shocked that her Abuela would
give her such advice of spilling coffee on her suitors shoes. The
characters are very distinguishing for the Cuban folktale.

The Legend of the Bluebonnet

Putnam.When a drought endangers the lives of
a Comanche tribe, a brave little girl named
She-Wh0-Is-Alone gives her doll that she loves
to the Great Spirit. The Great Spirit's answers
with rain. Every spring a special gift was
giving to Texas by the Great Spirit. A
wonderful book about Native American
legends. The book is a perfect example of
cultural markers with the clothing styles and
their dialect.

Olivia

Falconer, I. (2000). Olivia. New
York, NY: Anetheum. A very
energetic pig that is good at lots of
different things like wearing people
out. She likes many activities with
her family, going to the beach and
the museum. The uncontrollable
Olivia is ready for bed, and would
like to hear five stories. She settles
for an affectionate kiss from a
worn-out mother and three stories.
The story transcends the setting to
make understand that she loves her
life.

Sendak, M. (1963). Where the wild things


are. New York: Harper & Row. Max puts on
his wolf suit and misbehaves, so his mother
calls him 'Wild Thing'. That night a forest
begins to grow in his bedroom and Max goes
to where the wild things are by boat. Max
crowns himself as the king. He sends the
monsters to bed, he starts to feel lonely and
decided to go home where someone loves him.
The style of the book is created by the
illustrations.

by Maurice Sendak

Mirror: A book of reversible verse. New
York, N.Y.: Dutton Children's Books. This
poetry book was fun, ingenious, and
beautiful to look at. Mirror Mirror is
everything a person wants in a poetry
book for kids. The last poem of the book
The Road is perfect ending. The
characters, the theme, the illustrations
have that strong impact on the perfect
distinctiveness of this book.

Pigs. New York: Clarion Books.
The story differs from the
original folktale of The Three
Little Pigs makes it read more
like a modern day tale. It is
almost odd that a tale that is so
popular and that has been told in
many ways for many years was
imaginatively transformed into a
successful nontraditional type of
story for everyone to enjoy. It is a
more exciting story because you
are surprised with a twist. The
texture enhance the imagination
of the reader.

This Is Not My Hat


by Jon Klassen

Klassen, J. (2012). This is Not My Hat. Somerville,


Mass: Candlewick Press. The little fish takes the
tiny hat from the head of a large sleeping fish.
Then he tries to convince the reader that he will
not be caught because the fish is asleep. The little
fish continues to escape to the plants that are big,
tall, and close together. Once he reaches the plants,
the little fish disappearing among the seaweed. The
illustration help create story plot and mood. The
shapes of the bubbles convey the action of both fish.

My Teacher Is A Monster
by Peter Brown

Brown, P. (2014). My Teacher is


a Monster! : No, I am not.
London: Macmillan Children's
Books. Robert thinks that his
teacher Ms. Kirby, is a monster
because of the way she conducts
her classroom. On Saturday,
Robert wants to go to his favorite
place but who does he see Ms.
Kirby. He enjoys watching how
far a paper airplane can fly with
his teacher. That is when Bobby
realizes that Ms. Kirby is human
not a monster. The balance and
the arrangement of the pictures
is perfect for this story.

Its A Book

The monkey and the jackass are
sitting around having a
discussing about reading a book.
The jackass must have never
seen a book but the monkey
was enjoying the book. The
jackass didnt understand about
the book until the monkey
finely gives him the book to
read. The words are the strong
point of this story. The setting
is set by the illustrations.

The Paper Bag Princess


By Robert Munsch

Munsch, R. & Martchenko, M. (1980). The Paper Bag Princess. Toronto: Annick Press. This
is a fairy tale with roles in reversal the damsel in distress and the prince charming. A
dragon kidnaps Prince Ronald and burns her clothes. Princess Elizabeth finds the dragon,
outsmarts him and rescues Ronald. Ronald is rude to the princess and tells her to come
back when she is dressed proper. The illustrations extend and magnifies the story is created
through rich language, working together to establish the mood, setting, characters, and
theme of the story. It has it all.
