The text lists three categories of news releases:
1. Announcements of coming events or of personnel matters
2. Information regarding a cause
3. Information that is meant to build someones or some organizations business
Directions: As a group, first indicate the kind of news release each of the following is, and then
list the questions you would ask before writing the story.
A.NEWS RELEASE
The Board of Advisors for the Outstanding Young Men of America Awards Program announced
today that the men named below have been selected for inclusion in the 2010 edition of
Outstanding Young Men of America.
These men were selected from nominations received from senators, members of
Congress, governors, mayors, state legislators, university and college presidents and deans as
well as various civic groupsincluding the United States Jaycees, which also endorses the
Outstanding Young Med of America program.
In every community there are young men working diligently to make their cities, as well
as their country, better places in which to live. These men, having distinguished themselves in
one or more fields of endeavor, are outstanding and deserve to be recognized for their
achievements. The criteria for selection include a mans voluntary service to community,
professional leadership, academic achievement, business advancement, cultural
accomplishment, and civic and political participation.
The men listed below, along with fell Outstanding Young Med throughout North America,
will be featured in this prestigious annual awards publication.
Our board of advisors and editors salute all chosen as Outstanding Young Men of
America. We take great pride in bringing their accomplishments to the attention of the American
public.

McKinley, Soldan Seniors to Be Welcomed at Springfield University
SPRINGFIELD Eighty McKinley and 8- Soldan High School seniors will be welcomed to
Springfield University Friday, Feb. 10, through the Student Affirmative Action Program.
We think the program is an excellent opportunity for the seniors to learn first-hand what
the campus is like and to meet university students, faculty and staff, said Jennifer Hill-Young of
the Center for Student Life Office of Minority Student Affairs.
After a continental breakfast in Jesse Hall, students will meet with Dr. James Bates, vice
chancellor for student affairs; University Students Association President Dave LaGesse;
members of the Legion of Black Collegians; and Dr. Carolyn Washington, assistant professor of
education and coordinator of the Black Studies program.
Advisement in financial aid, admissions and housing will be completed in the morning
session.
After lunch, the high school seniors will meet at the Campus Career Planning and
Placement Center for a program on opportunities and center services. The afternoon concludes
with students attending an orientation of their choice to one of the universitys 15 academic
divisions.
More than 1,500 minority high school students in the state will spend a day at the
university through the Student Affirmative Action Program this year.
C. NEWS RELEASE
OPTIMIST BASKETBALL CONTEST TO BE HELD
The Downtown Optimist Club of Springfield will hold a Tri-Star Basketball skills contest at
Springfield College on February 19, 2004, at 1 p.m. The contest is composed of three basic skill
tests aimed at evaluating a contestants skill in passing, shooting and dribbling.
Boys (and/or girls) will compete in six age groups, 8 through 13, against youth of their
own age. All that is needed to compete is the desire and a pair of gym shoes, according to Jess
Weaver, club president.
There will be plaques awarded to the winners in each age group. Every contestant will
receive a memento scorecard. Entry blanks are available at MFA Employees Credit Union, 2909
Falling Leaf Lane, or at the contest site on the day of competition.

(evening).
