Separators

Why have grease separators to be used?

Industries generating waste water have

to ensure with the aid of appropriate pretreatment installations that substances
and liquids spreading harmful and
noxious vapours and smells do not attack
building materials and drainage installations or interfere with operations and do
not penetrate the pipes. Grease separators pursuant to DIN 4040/DIN EN 1825
have to be set up in premises which are
exposed to the incidence of waste water
containing fats and oils in order to ensure
that the fats and oils of organic origin are
removed from the waste water. This
applies, for example, to kitchens and
meat processing plants. In order to protect the building, an active back pressure
stop has to be fitted. It follows that a lifting plant or prefabricated pumping sta-

tion has to be provided after every grease separator fitted below the backflow
level (normally road level)!
The individual requirements to be met by
trade and industry concerning the performance of grease separators, lifting
plants and prefabricated pumping stations call for adaptable products of different sizes and made of different materials. ACO Passavant have for decades
been supplying the most comprehensive
range of grease separators, lifting plants
and pumping stations for installation in
and above ground made from reinforced
concrete, stainless steel and polyethylene.
Reinforced concrete and polyethylene
have proved particularly suitable for
ground installation.

Grease separators pursuant to DIN 4040/DIN EN 1825 have to be set up

in premises exposed to the incidence of waste water containing fats.

Excerpt from DIN 1986-100, paragraph 6.2.2

Why have light mineral liquid separators to be used?

Light mineral liquid separators constitute

the proven problem solvers in the case of
minerally polluted waste water capable of
forming a flammable or explosive atmosphere. Light mineral liquid separators are
chiefly used at petrol stations, parking
spaces, wash installations, motor vehicle
workshops, mineral oil storage plants or
power stations. These installations have
to be such that no contaminated waste
water is able to emerge if there is a backflow or when the self-closing shutting
device (float) of the plant begins to operate.

When the European norm DIN EN 858

came into force, ACO Passavant completely revised their range of light mineral
liquid separators and set new standards
with the aid of innovative products. It is
now possible to adapt the separators to
users actual practical requirements, thus
considerably reducing investment and
operating costs.
You are able to obtain more information
by requesting our new light mineral liquid
separator brochure. Please get in touch
with [email protected].

If mineral oils or light mineral liquids, particularly those which are

flammable or capable of forming an explosive atmosphere, penetrate
the drainage network, separators for light mineral liquids have to be
provided after the drainage points.

1.

If static water level is below backflow level (normally road level), an "active backflow safety device" (lifting plant or pumping
station) has principally to be fitted.

2.

Caution in the case of ground installation: In order to avoid additional costs and unnecessary coordination expenditure,
we recommend separators which reach the mentioned static load without additional reinforcement expenditure (e. g.
load distribution plate) - for example OLEOMAX , OLEOPATOR or ECO-FPI.

3.

Caution in the case of free-standing installation of grease separators: in the case of temperatures in the separator of
> 60 or in the case of erection in areas exposed to fire hazards we recommend to use separators of material stainless steel.

Grease Separators

The principle

The disposal

A grease separator operates purely mechanically according to the gravity principle

(density difference), i. e. heavy substances
in the waste water precipitate and light substances, such as for example animal oils
and fats, rise to the surface of the water.

Sludge trap and separator have to be completely drained and cleaned at least once a
month, preferably, however, fortnightly.
Subsequent refilling of separator plants
has to be done with water (e.g. drinking
water, operation water, treated water from
grease separator plant), which corresponds to local inlet regulations.

Injected air

Operating method of air bubble injection

Air is continuously being injected into the pressure tube with the aid of
a compressor. The air bubbles rising at the end of the pressure tube
ensure a constant movement below the pressure tube, thus preventing
any floating substance forming media (e. g. residual grease from the
separator) from depositing. This ensures an extremely reliable level
measurement.

Fresh Grease Separators

Partial disposal
Principles and function
This type of grease separators is mainly
used in restaurant kitchens, canteens and
catering trades
.
The grease accumulates in the upper
cone, the sludge drops to the lower cone.

Fields of application

The grease is maintained liquid by heating the upper cone.

Depending on grease and sludge incidence, filling into the collecting tanks can
be performed.

Process Technology

ACO Passavant process technology - high performance technology

Application
Biological waste water treatment is a particularly environment-friendly application
system. The considerable quantities of
oils and fats of organic origin from kitchens and the food processing industry
as well as the cosmetic industry carried
by waste water call, in accordance with
the regulations in force, for the use of a
separation plant. Solid and liquid organic
oils and fats are removed from the waste
water in the separator exclusively by force of gravity. However, only the freely
separable oils and fats as well as suspended matter are normally retained. Emulsified and soluble components in the waste
water pass through the separator almost
unimpeded. This is bound to lead to
exceeding the limit value of the lipophilic
substance parameter. As in many cities
(Frankfurt, Munich, ...), the authorities
focus on lipophilic substance parameter,
the use of furthergoing cleaning stages
behind a separator plant is required.
Thanks to ACO Passavants newly developed and often used high performance
biology, the actual values fall permanently short of the maximum values governing
the addition of lipophilic substances. Furthermore, following values can be reduced thanks to the high performance biology: COD, pH-value, BOD5, settling substances.

Function
In the case of high performance biology
developed by ACO Passavant, the bioreactor is laid out as tower biology. This
considerably reduces the space required
when compared to a standard submerged body or fixed bed biology. After
having passed through the grease separator, the pretreated waste water is buffered in an intermediate tank and is taken
from there fully automatically (controlled
by level measurement) to the biological
phase. The substances still present in the
waste water are processed in the area
of the bio-reactor with the aid of specially
adapted micro-organisms. The oxygen
required by the micro-organisms is added
with the aid of the most modern diaphragm technology. The central feature
of the bio-reactor is the arrangement of
the carrier material. The decisive advantage presented by the carrier material is
the large surface used as growth area for
the specially adapted micro-organisms.
Part of the waste water as well as
suspended and residual matter are continuously recycled to the intermediate tank
in order to be subjected once again to
the degradation process in the bio-reactor, thus increasing the performance of
the plant. The treated waste water is then
taken to the drains. There is also a possibility to take the waste water before reaching the drains through a filter, and thus
to separate the still remaining solids.

Practice
The organic load carried by waste water
differs according to the type of kitchen:
restaurants, refectories, canteens, hospitals, ... Thanks to our experience of treating waste water containing fats, we
design the high performance biology duly
allowing for the various origins. Before
operating the plant, we inoculage in a
unique manner the ideal type and quantity
of micro-organisms in the bio-reactor. The
plant then merely requires energy to operate the pumps and ventilation technique.
The use of chemicals is completely
dispensed with. Follow-up costs can thus
almost be avoided.

Grease Separators
Hints on installation of free-standing grease separator plants as per DIN EN 1825-2

1 Ventilation

Inlet and outlet have to be adequately ventilated!

Take ventilation above roof
Connecting pipes exceeding 5 m
have to be separately ventilated.
Directly in front of the separator
plant, a ventilation pipe has to be
provided to inlet pipes exceeding
10 m and without ventilated connecting pipe!

2 Avoiding

Thermal insulation in the case of

inlet pipes led through unheated
cellar rooms
Heating in the case of inlet pipes in
building parts exposed to frost, as
e. g. in underground garages
Temperature of heating should be
adjustable via a thermostat.
With heated rooms and frostfree
laid pipes, no additional measures
are required.

grease deposits

Transition to horizontal pipes by

two 45 bends
Intermediate section must at least
be 250 mm long.
Then, a stabilisation path has to be
provided the length of which must
at least be ten times of nominal
width of inlet pipe. (Example with
DN 100: 100 x 10 = 1000 mm
stabilisation path)
Inlet pipes must have a slope of at
least 2 % (1:50).

3 Inlet

Pipe bottom of backflow loop has

to be taken above backflow level.
