TARBELA HYDEL POWER STATION

Tarbela Dam is one of the worlds largest earth and rock filled Dam and greatest water
resources development project which was completed in 1976 as a component part of Indus Basin
Project. The Dam is built on one of the Worlds largest rivers the Indus known as the
Abbasin or the father of rivers.

HIGH VOLTAGE TRANSMISSION LINE DESIGN

For our project we take output of first unit of tarbella power generation plant i.e.
Generator with apparent power of 205MVA, real power of 175MW with power factor 0.85 and
generator voltage are 13.8kV. Generator voltage is further stepped up by power transformer of
voltage ratio 13/220kV.
The distance between tarbella station and Islamabad station is 112 km. We use Steel
Tower due to its capability to withstand longer spans. We have considered single circuit coming
from tarbella. We are using 220kV as power transmission voltage. Span of tower is 320 meter so
total no. of towers used in transmission are 350.

Analysis

STATCOM provides excellent voltage regulation,

power factor and active power regulation
capabilities. The STATCOM is one of the
important shunt connected Flexible AC
Transmission system controllers to control the
power flow and make better transient stability. A
statcom is a controlled reactive power source. It
provides voltage support by generating or
absorbing capacitors banks. From graphs It can be
seen that it regulates the voltage at its terminals by
compensating the amount of reactive power in or
out from the power system.
