UNIT 8: THE STORY OF MY VILLAGE

To help students learn and pratice: + reported speech
+ conditional senetence type 1
IV/ Objective: By the end of the lesson, Students (Ss) will be able to:
+ Make Conditional sentence type 1 and reported speech appropriately
+ Use structures correctly and suitably to communicate
V/ Teaching aids: text book, pictures, posters, board, handout.
VI/ Anticipated problems:
+ Ss may not understand the new structure clearly, so teacher (T) should be
ready to help them.
+ Sometimes, it is in the end of period, but the lesson is not finished, there
are some activities which have not happened T should control suitably
for each activity.

- T sticks the poster of Jumbled letter on the board
and asks Ss to work in group of 6 or 8 and rearrange the or 8
jumpled letter to make a meaningful words
- List of words:

BOWL

- T devides class into 6 or 7 groups and gives the


instructions of the game.
+ I have 6 words which is jumbled letter on the
board
+ You have to work in group of 6 or 8 and
rearrange the jumpled letter to make a meaningful
word
+ After 2 minutes, the repretative of each group go
to the board to write the answer of your group. The
group which has the correct answers and finish more
quickly is the winner.
Check the instructions:
+ what is your duties? rearrange the jumpled
letter to make a meaningful word
+ you work in group or pair? group of 6 or 8
+ how much time can you get? 2 minutes
+ lets start!2 minutes for you
- After 2 minutes th reprentative of each group go
to board to write the answers.
- T checks the answers of each group and gives
feedback for Ss.

Pronunciation: distinguish 2 sounds:


/u/ and /au/
T models 2 sounds /u/ and /au/
T reads again and asks Ss repeat.
Pratice: T calls Ss read the sentences that have 2
sounds /u/ and /au/

T asks Ss to distinguish 2 sounds:


T numbered 2 sounds: 1(/u/), 2(/au/)
T asks Ss close the book.
T reads some words having these sounds in text
book and asks Ss choose the correct sound of
each word.

Grammar:
1. Setting the scene:
- T sticks the picture on the board

- T elicits the target language ( structure ) from the


picture.
- T points at the picture and talk:
+ Today, Its raining, and what does he hope?
He hopes it will not rain tomorrow/ it will be nice
tomrrow.
+ Why does he hope that? because he wants
to go out with his friends.
- T asks Ss to listen and repeat this sentence in
English:
If it does not rain tomorrow, he will go out with
his friends.
- T read aloud and asks Ss repeat this sentence.

2. Present the structure: the 1st conditional
sentence
+ Today we will study the conditional sentence
type 1
- T asks Ss to look at the sentence and find out the
form of the 1st conditional sentence on the board.
Eliciting:
+ How many clauses are there? 2 clauses
+ The first clause begins with which word?
begin with If
+ What is the tense of the first and second
clause? Present simple and future simple.
- T writes down the structure on the board.

Example:
I will visit Ho Chi Minh City if I have time.

*** The basic variants:


1. it to refer to the objective ability
If + V (the simple present) +O , S + may +V_inf
Example:
- It's sunny. If we go out without a hat, we may get
a headache.
2. it refers to the permission.
If + S+V(the simple present) +O , S+ can + V_inf
Example:
If you finish your test, you can go home now.

Example:
If you want to get good marks, you must do the
exercises.
4. If . not= Unless (Tr phi; nu ...... khng)
Example:
- I won't visit you if I don't have time
Unless I have time, I wont visit you.
- We'll go swimming if the weather is fine.
Unless the weather is fine, we won't go
swimming.
Note: Contains clause "unless" is not used in the
negative
- I will go out tonight unless I don't have so muchwork
to do.
Usage: conditional sentence type 1 is a real
conditional sentence. It is used to talk about things can
happen in the present or in the future.
Concept checking:
Form:
+ Is If clause in past simple? no, it is in
simple present tense
+ Is main clause Will + V_ing? no,its Will
+ V_inf
Meaning:
+ If Lan is a boy, I will love her is correct?
no, its not real condition in real life
PRACTICE

Practice 1: Word cues drill


T asks Ss to do task in group of 6.
T introduces exercise 3 (page 90) to Ss and
explains how to do it.
+ Everyone! Work in group of 6 to do this task.
Look at what Lan hopes will happen in the future,make
sentence using structure of conditional sentence type 1.
Each person makes one sentence, next person use main

*Step for the drill:


- Model and drill the first cue: if I dont go out

- T asks Ss work in pair to do the same with other

- After 3 mins, T calls some pair to present.
*Expected answer:
1. If I dont go out much, I will do more homework.
2. If I do more homework, I will pass the exam.
3. If I pass the exam, I will go to medical college.
4. If I go to the medical college, I will study medicine.
5. If I study medicine, I will become a doctor.
6. If I become a doctor, I will cure diseases and help
sick people.
Practice 2:

answers from Ss.
- T models the first sentence.

Matching game:
- T asks Ss to prepare a piece of paper
- T devides class into 2 groups ( group A and B)
- T gives instructions:
+ Group A write the If clause in their papers and
group B write the main clause in their papers by
using conditional sentence type 1. After 5 minutes, 2
groups will put their papers into 2 seperate boxes in
the board.
+ The representative of group A will choose a piece
of paper in If clause box accidentally and read it.
Group B has to match the main clause to make the
completed sentence.
+ The representative of group B will choose a piece
of paper in main clause box accidentally and read it.
Group A has to match the If clause to make the
completed sentence.
+ Two groups appoint 2 other representatives to
continue the activity until all papers in boxes are
read
- T checks the instructions:
+ What is your duties?
+ How much time can you get?
- T lets Ss begin the the game.
- T monitors, collects the mistakes and gives
feedback.
- T asks Ss: To practice the pronunciation.
To learn by heart the form and usage
of conditional sentence type 1.
- T asks Ss do exercise in workbook.
