CURRICULUM VITAE

PROF. SAMPADA KUMAR SWAIN, PGDTTM, MTA, FDP(IIMI) Ph.D. & D.Litt. (Tourism)
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

JOURNEY OF MY LIFE:
It begins with dreams that drive
someone to work hard with commitment. This has so far
happened in my personal and professional life. I did not dream
of becoming a professor in a Central University as well as a
National University. I did not dream of becoming an Oxford
University Press (OUP) author. Having started my career as a
government approved Tourist Guide in the early 1990s with the
primary job of receiving guests, explaining about the places of
interest, taking care of their comfortable stay, and finally,
sending them back happy, I entered the world of teaching and
research on the issues of travel and tourism in 1996.

CHILDHOOD:
It was an eventful experience in childhood
starting from fishing, swimming, cycling, climbing trees to
playing kabadi, kho-kho, cricket and hide-and-seek in the
banyan and Jamun trees. I used to play with my three cousin
brothers: Manoj, now a young entrepreneur in the Air
Conditioning business, Lalatendu, presently a qualified and
trained high school teacher, and Lalitendu, currently a
promising teacher-cum-trainer in Hotel and Catering
Management. I also used to play along with my cousin sister
Chhabi, presently a successful homemaker. My own maternal
uncles house and the house of my cousin brothers maternal
uncle were two preferred places where I used to play and enjoy
with Dilip, my long-time friend, now working as Assistant
Professor in English. It is the culture of the joint family that has
taught me three things: LOVE, SACRIFICE AND SHARING. These
three symbols of value have influenced and shaped my
personality.

CHILDHOOD FRIENDS: Pradip (Chagala), is presently working

as Post- master and Susanta, presently working as a High School
Headmaster. All three of us used to catch fish by traditional
methods.
1

MY COLLEGE FRIENDS: From Kendrapada College to Vani

Vihar (Utkal University), Prasant Mallick, Animesh Roul and
Hrudanand Rath, all three were a pleasure to be with. While
Prasant and Animesh went to Jawaharlal Nehru University, New
Delhi for further studies and thereafter settled in their
respective careers, Hrudanand teaches college-level Economics
in Odisha.
SURVIVED TO SERVE: I was rescued from my paternal
grandfathers house gutted by fire in one evening when I was
about three months old. People in my village declared me dead
after they recovered me from a village fishing pond. I had a fatal
injury after falling down from a running stone-loaded truck at
the age of 10. I was presumed drowned in the water when I
was attempting to swim in the village pond. I could manage to
save myself from snake bite. I was critically wounded during the
final year of my graduation when I fell into a canal. I am the
third child and only surviving child of my parents. My innocent
and semi-literate parents lost six children and all of them died
within three or four months of their birth. Hailing from a
peasant family located in an inaccessible place in Odisha, I
completed my primary, middle and high school in the village
environment. Neither did my parents or my grandparents
imagine something different for me nor did I dream of doing
things differently. I used to help my grandfather and father in
the field and sold vegetables in the market.
POVERTY-STRICKEN LIFE: I was witness to the poverty of
our joint family. I had to manage the school homework and
agricultural work together. My primary and high school
education passed in a very haphazard way. My mother insisted
that I read books and do my homework, unlike my father who
was unmindful of my study. I still remember the days in the
monsoon season when we did not have money to buy daily
household articles.

DREAM OF MY PARENTS: My father wished me to be with him

all the time while mother wished me to pursue higher studies
and get government jobs. The happiest day that my late father
enjoyed was the conferment of PhD degree to me by Utkal
University, Odisha. I have had the privilege of receiving the first
PhD and D.Litt. degrees in Tourism from Utkal University.

ROLE MODEL: My late grandfather is Dambarudhar Swain,

who was a hardworking and honest
marginal farmer. He
fought against all odds and adversities to harvest the crops. I
have been inspired by his honesty and sincerity. I have learnt

two basic philosophies from his life: WORK IS WORSHIP AND

DUTY IS GOD.
MY FAMILY: Both me and wife (Puspalata) studied in the same
village school. We got married on 2 March, 2000. She was the
first girl whom I had liked without seeing and knowing much
about her. I conveyed my wishes to my father that I would
marry Puspa and the rest is history. God has blessed us with
two beautiful daughters: Purbasha (MAMA) and Pratyasha
(MEGHANA). They are my two eyes. Both of them are now
studying in Kendriya VidyalayaI in Bhubaneswar. Purbasha is
extremely versatile and has interest in creative writing.
Pratyasha is an introvert but committed to her work.

HAPPIEST DAY: The day that I received the Book titled

Tourism Principles & Practices authored by me and Dr. J. M.
Mishra, Assistant Professor, Pondicherry University from OUP,
New Delhi
GRIEF-STRICKEN MORNING: I broke down after hearing the
untimely death of my father on 26 September, 2007. I could not
be present to perform the last rites for my father being the only
and lonely child. I pray that this should not happen to anyone.

MY RECENT PROFESSIONAL LIFE IN ADMINISTRATION: I

have recently embarked on the University Administration with
a call of the esteemed Vice-Chancellor Prof. Tejasvi Kattimani to
serve as In-charge Registrar. I have Joined as the registrar
without having a second thought to it for two important
reasons: to make a robust system for better delivery of services
and to ensure the functioning of various activities in a very
transparent manner. Administration in a typical university
system serves the teaching as well as students community and
helps them bring laurels and honours.
A university
administrative system can be more efficient to provide desired
results and effective in catering diverse needs of its key
members. In a conventional sense, administration connects
each member on one common thread to understand, help and
contribute each other mutually. It is a service center to ensure
innovative teaching, learning and research atmosphere, thereby
moving towards creation of new knowledge. Being a diehard
and hardcore researcher with much flare and interest in
actionable research and value-based teaching, I found myself an
odd person in a most challenging job. I resumed my work with
a little apprehension in the first one week at the office whether
to be able to make timely delivery of services or not. First three
fateful nights became sleepless for me and disturbed me so
frequently and so much that is inexpressible and unutterable.
Two interesting questions sparked my mind. First, can the
administration be people friendly and people-centric? Second,
can people be friendly to the functioning of university
administration? It is always win-win to be accountable and
productive.
LIVING WITH PEOPLE: I have managed to uncover two implicit
as well as two explicit problems engulfing the university
administration network. Two implicit problems are: Lacking
Mutual Trust and Belief and Lacking Interest in Timely Delivery.
Two explicit problems are: Expression of Anger and Apathy and
Lack of Professionalism. Changing the attitude through
continuous dialogue, interface and counseling is the thrust area
that we are now focused on. I firmly believe in six important
organizational value systems:

SELF-DISCIPLINE
MUTUAL RESPECT
INTEGRITY
TIMELY DELIVERY
TEAM WORK
ORGANIZATIONAL LOYALTY

We are determined to bury and keep behind three key poisons

paralyzing the system.
INFIGHTING
INDISCIPLINE
INDIVIDUAL VESTED INTEREST

SERVING ORGANIZATION LIKE SERVING STUDENTS:

Administration was not my core domain to be cheerful and
make a career. It was not my areas of interest to think and
work seriously. It is rather a mission for me to serve selflessly
for all those who are devoted towards their duty and
responsibility in raising and nourishing this baby university. A
teacher becoming an administrator is like a monk becoming
a family man. A teacher is always worried for his/her wards
and is committed for building a new generation with healthy
and bright mind through powerful teachings. It is perhaps my
other facet of life to serve and care for organization as my
MOTHER. I find no differences between serving students and
serving organizations. Both are the two different works with
one principle. A serious teacher never sleeps for his/her
students like a serious administrator never compromises with
the sincerity and honesty in serving organization. My love and
respect for my organization is equally important like the way I
respect my parents and elders. I do respect the principles and
philosophies of organization, which are our guiding forces to
enjoy our professional life.
SIMPLIFYING THE COMPLEX PROCESSES: My utmost effort is
to reduce hassles and provide easy ways of getting the woks
done. Administrative processes are largely complex in nature
despite evolution of several theories to understand the complex
and dynamic nature of administration. Rules and regulations
are governing forces of administration and people acknowledge
you when works get done easily and others do criticize with
abusive languages when works do not get done as per the rules.
Rules make and break friendships. I do believe in interpreting
the rules for benefits of masses not for individuals. I stand
firmly against the rule breakers and violators. Simplifying the
complex processes need tremendous patience and
understandings. To me, an individual stands nowhere when
interests of organization are given importance.
