ORIENTATION
The OMNI-RANGE systemcon be used for orientotion (obtoining o "fix" when oirplone's locotion is
in doubt).
Beorings to ground stotions do not depend upon
the ottitude or heoding of the oirplone, ond hence
con be token eosily ond occurotely in rough oir.
No heoding correction is necessory.

(SeeFig. 4)
The full ronge ond occurocy of the VHF omnironge system con only be reolized when the oirplone is equipped with the proper type of ontenno.
A horizontol V-type is obsolutely necessory; o verticol whip is definitely not sotisfoctory, olthough it
moy oppeor to be when tried. Verticolly polorized
components ore not rodioted by the ground stotions,
but ore produced by reflections. Therefore o verticol ontenno moy receive strong signols, but not
directly from the ground stotion, giving rise to
very unrelioble beorings.
The locotion of the ontenno is likewise of porom o u n t i m p o r t o n c e . l t i s o d v i s o b l et o p l o c e i t o n t h e

ontennos ond wires locoted within two feet of the

F.I
E. MAR,KERBEACONANTENNA
(SeeFig. 5)
The morker beoconontenno, which is not furnished
with the eguipment, should be fobricoted from
suitoble ontenno wire. lt should be locoted under
the fusiloge ond spoced obout six inches owoy
from it by o poir of suitoble support mostS.Noti
that the point where the leod-in is connected is
five inches disploced from the center of the ontenno wire. This dimension is importont for proper
motching.
A shorter (quorter wove) bent-rod, shunt-fed ontenno mounted on the under surfoce of the oirplone hos been found to be sotisfoctory if the feed
point is corefully odiusted for best reception.
