Looking back on the happenings of Shamong

The Sun

s we bid adieu to 2014, we take a look

back at what made news in Shamong
Township this year.

Schools

The Shamong Board of Education

kicked off the new year by swearing in
two familiar faces.
Both Jeff Siedlecki and Jeff Warner ran unopposed and began three-year terms.
Im excited about the opportunity to continue to
serve the people of Shamong while ensuring the
best for our most important residents, our children, Warner said. Being chosen to serve on the
board is a big responsibility that I take seriously.
Residents in Shamong Township saw an increase in both their local and regional school district taxes in 2014. Regional school taxes increased
$123.48 on the average assessed home of $307,899 in
the township. The tax levy was 4.11 cents higher

than last year. Overall, the district raised taxes 1.35

percent over last year. The total budget amount was
$151,735,648, an increase of 0.7 percent from 2013-14.
The Shamong Township School District adopted
an operating budget of $14,587,957. That total meant
an increase of $28.92 per $100,000 of a homes assessed value. The average assessed value of homes
in Shamong Township is $307,899.
The board approved an affiliation agreement between the Shamong Township School District and
The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey for students to participate in sponsor internships, clinical
education placements and fieldwork programs in
health services delivery, during the 2013-2014 school
year.
For the first time since June 2013, the teachers in
the Shamong Township School District worked with
a contract.
At the June 17 Shamong Township Board of Education meeting, the board ratified the contract beplease see SENECA, page 2

readies for PARCC
Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, or PARCC. The
test differs from the previous
HSPA exam in that is taken digitally.
We have a great administration team who have done a great
job of preparing for PARCC,
Principal Jeff Spector said. We
feel comfortable that we are prepared for the technological aspects of administering the test.
The challenge is for our teachers
in managing and maintaining the
instructional time devoted to
PARCC and the normal curriculum. It will be an adjustment.
The Lenape Regional High

forefront with anti-bullying programs. Its efforts have not only resulted in all four schools being

It was a long time coming,
Ciliberti said. We were able to finalize the teachers contract and
the principal/admin contract.
Very pleased and happy to return
our attention fully to planning for

The history of the negotiations

County makes progress

on plan to end homelessness
motel, individuals and families in
Burlington County in need of
housing will not only be placed
into a permanent housing opportunity but will also be provided
with the assistance necessary to
become self-reliant. This is, without a doubt, a major step in ending
homelessness in Burlington County.
Garganio also noted that the
ongoing 10-year plan to end homelessness maintains, a commitment to preventing homelessness
whenever
possible.
Making
Burlington County an affordable
place to live and a prosperous
place to work can both prevent
residents from falling into the
dire straits that lead to homelessness and help pull people out of
it.
Those residents seeking assistance should contact the countys
one-stop human services department at 795 Woodlane Road in Westampton or at (609) 265-5800.

Freeholder Director Bruce

Garganio provided an update on
the progress being made as part
of the countys 10-year plan to
end homelessness.
You will remember that, earlier this year, I spoke about the urgent need to find permanent
housing for those Burlington
County residents who have fallen
on hard times, Garganio said.
As a county, we have made it our
priority to end the vicious cycle
that has far too many children
growing up in motels and lacking
the support and stability necessary for success.
I am happy to announce that
we will be going out to bid for an
initiative that will make Burlington County the only county in the
state to develop a program that reallocates emergency assistance
dollars for permanent housing
and case management, Garganio
continued. This means that

but have also helped reduce bullying, violence and vandalism incidents.
According to the district's
semi-annual violence and vandalism report, the district had 63
combined incidents of violence,
vandalism, weapons and substance abuse from Jan. 1 through
June 30. This is a decrease of five
incidents from the same period in
2013.
Jim Kehoe, the district's security and emergency management
coordinator, said a significant
drop in incidents of violence and
bullying led to an overall decrease in incidents.
We've had a decrease in incidents in the bullying, violence,

vandalism and weapons categories, he said.

Last year, the district had a significant decrease in the number
of bullying incidents.
We had no HIB incidents during the (January through June)
reporting period, Kehoe said.
For the entire 2013-14 school
year, there was only one confirmed HIB incident, a large decrease from the seven reported in
2012-13.
The Lenape district credited
the reduction in incidents to its
focus on anti-bullying programs.
Superintendent Carol Birnbohm
said the district had a number of
HIB presentations and assemblies during School Violence
Awareness Week in October. In
addition, all four schools received
a No Place For Hate designation
from the Anti-Defamation League

in our opinion

Lets resolve to give back in 2015

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

For the New Year, we could all give some of our time to lend a helping hand
Dan McDonough Jr.

ost of us are lucky enough to

spend the holidays with our
loved ones. Most of us are
lucky enough to be able to give and receive presents, to put a home-cooked
meal on the table and to sit back, relax
and enjoy whats important in life.
There are many, though, living right
here in our state of New Jersey, who
are not as lucky as we are. And these
are the people who need our help the
most.
So as we are about to put 2014 behind
us and enter a New Year, lets all resolve to give back more in 2015.
We like to think of ourselves as giving people, but compared to the rest of
the country, thats just not the case. A
study released last week by the Corporation for National and Community

Share your thoughts

Do you volunteer, or do you plan to volunteer in the New Year? Share your
thoughts on this, and other topics,
through a letter to the editor.

Service and the National Conference

on Citizenship found that 22.4 percent
of New Jersey residents volunteered
their time in 2013.
That ranked us near the bottom,
45th, in the nation. Utah topped the list
at 44.6 percent.
The study found that 1.45 million
residents volunteered a total of more
than 206 million hours of service. The
stats counted only non-paid work as
volunteering.

Millennials in our state ranked even

lower, at 49th overall, with only 17.3
percent of the age group volunteering
in 2013.
The good news is that it doesnt take
much to change this trend. Volunteering doesnt have to take up all of ones
free time, and it doesnt have to include
big monetary donations. Volunteering
can be as simple as pitching in at a
soup kitchen, coaching a Little League
team or collecting trash at a public
park.
With volunteering, doing a little can
go a long way. What may seem as not
much to most of us can have a huge
impact to someone else.
So while youre compiling your list
of To Dos for 2015, add giving back to
the community by volunteering.

Indian Mills Elementary School

celebrates Special Education Day
Special Education Day, recognized on Dec. 2 each year, is a national holiday to recognize the
first federal special education law,
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. On this day, people
commemorate the idea that every
person is important and unique
and so is the requirement for education. The original public law for
a free and appropriate education
for all children was signed in 1975
by President Ford.
The staff and students at Indian Mills Elementary School
turned an oft-forgotten milestone
into a special celebration. The
daylong event was jammed with a
plethora of exceptional ways to
emphasize the distinctiveness of
every student and embrace unity
of effort.
In support of the overall theme
of Uniqueness, the kindergarten through fourth grade students decorated owls for the
Look Whooos Unique bulletin
board. Emphasizing the critical
message of teamwork to accomplish any goal, the staff and students participated in a Spirit Day
theme of basketball. However, instead of the 76ers, they were the
75ers, the year the reform became
law, by wearing basketball apparel. To further support the ideas
expressed by the law and its intent, teachers incorporated topics

such as diversity, disabilities and

inclusion of all into their daily
and weekly lessons. Some activities included reading books that
taught about disabilities and the
acceptance of others that are different, special meet and greets
and games. Stories about acceptance and friendship were woven
into language arts and social
studies.
It was a remarkable day for
both the teachers and students.
Everyone came away with a new
appreciation for the law and the
possibilities it unveiled.
