Sample Paper - ICPCES 2010

This document proposes a modified hysteresis controller for a three-level shunt active power filter. The controller provides fixed switching frequency and three-level PWM output from the voltage source converter. It is shown to improve the total harmonic distortion in the source current compared to conventional hysteresis control methods. Simulation results using PSCAD/EMTDC demonstrate the controller provides balanced source currents with 2.1% THD while compensating an unbalanced, nonlinear three-phase load. The proposed controller yields better performance than traditional approaches.

Abstract-- In this paper a modified hysteresis controller based shunt active power filter is
proposed. The voltage source converter (VSC) is operated using the proposed modified
hysteresis current control method. The method provides fixed switching frequency operation, and
three-level PWM output. The proposed controller is yield the improved result as compared to the
conventional hysteresis control. The calculation of active power filter ratings and power loss
estimation has been shown. The performance of the proposed shunt active power filter is
illustrated through the compensation of a distribution system using PSCAD/EMTDC simulation
studies.

INTRODUCTION
Recently there has been increased use of shunt active power filters [1]-[2]. Many methods are
based on the PI controller tuned at the frequency to be compensated. The use of proportional plus
resonant controller provides the easy means to analyze the dynamic performance of the current
control loop. The use of hysteresis current control method has been attempted for the two-level
current control [3]-[5]. It has been shown that the method yields the good dynamic performance
but only the limitation is variable switching frequency.
A shunt active power filter is a voltage source converter (VSC) operated in a current control
mode. It improves the quality of the power by eliminating harmonic contents of the load.
Additionally it also mitigates the poor load power factor, and balances the source currents for the
unbalanced loads [2], [6], [7].
In this paper the control of three-level shunt active power filter is proposed using modified
hysteresis current controller. The VSC is operated using hysteresis current control method. The
method provides variable switching frequency operation of the semiconductor switches of the
VSC. The unipolar modulation of the control function provides the three-level PWM output [8].
This shifts the spectrum of the PWM output to the twice the switching frequency [9]. This
provides the unity power factor with balanced source current and improved THD (total harmonic
distortion). It is shown that the overall performance of the shunt compensated distribution system
can be predicted using the linear analysis. The performance of the proposed controller is
illustrated through the 3-phase compensation of the distribution system using PSCAD/EMTDC
simulator.

CARRIER BASED THREE-LEVEL MODULATION

The three-level inverter output is obtained following the unipolar PWM of the control function
as follows [8].
1) If
elseif

err > vtri then Sw1 is on and vAO = + Vdc/2

err < vtri then Sw4 is on and vAO = Vdc/2

Similarly for other phase leg of H-bridge,

2) If
elseif

err > vtri then

Sw3 is on and vBO = + Vdc/2

err < vtri then

Sw2 is on and vBO = Vdc/2

where err = (iref ish) is the error function obtained from reference shunt current is iref and the
actual shunt current is ish.

MODIFIED HYSTERESIS CONTROLLER

For the reference shunt current ishref generated using the suitable reference current generation
algorithm, the hysteresis current controller follows the following control law.
u(t) = + 1

for ish(t) < ishref(t) (h+)

or e(t) > + (h+)

(1a)

u(t) = 1

for ish(t)> ishref(t) + (h+)

or e(t) < (h+)

(1b)

u(t) = 0

for ish(t)> ishref(t) + and ish(t) < ishref(t) or <e(t) < +

(1c)

where err = (iref ish) is the error function obtained from reference shunt current is iref and the
actual shunt current is ish. The symbol O represents the mid point of the dc voltage Vdc. This
modulation method significantly reduces the ripples in control function. The detail will follow in
the full paper.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
Switching dynamics of the single-phase H-bridge VSI is verified using PSCAD/EMDTC
simulation studies. The parameters of the system are given in Table I. The load considered is
nonlinear and it is assumed that it draws the predetermined fundamental and harmonic frequency
content. The load is assumed to draw the following current.

In this paper load is taken for simulation is the 3-phase diode bridge rectifier supplying
resistive and inductive load. The linear load connected is unbalanced. Three-phase load current is
shown in Fig.4 this constitutes the total THD of 33%. The major distorting harmonic components
are 5th and 7th. The currents are also unbalanced.

The compensated balanced source current using the proposed controller is shown in Fig.5. The
THD is improved to 2.1. The 3-level inverter output voltage is shown in Fig.6.

The tracking of the reference shunt current is shown in Fig.7. The reference is generated
using the algorithm given in [6]-[7]. The algorithm also includes the method to control the dc

CONCLUSIONS
The results for the new controller are verified through simulations and experiments and it is
concluded that the source current becomes linear and also total harmonic distortion in source
current is improved to 2.1% by using this modified hysteresis controller..
