Writing A Proposal For A New Entertainment Programme
BBC Entertainment make programmes which attract an audience of between two and eight million
viewers and broadcast to the whole of the UK. Does your idea have broad enough appeal and can it
reach such a large audience for the channel you have chosen?
The Broadcasters Audience Research Board (BARB) provides useful information about the audience
numbers for different programmes.
The BBC Entertainment What We Want section of the Commissioning website provides
information about recent programmes and is a good place to find out what has been working well
recently and what Commissioners are looking for.
If you wish to submit an idea for a spin-off programme, for example a childrens version of Pointless,
please note that many BBC programmes are made by independent production companies and an
idea such as this may encounter copyright difficulties. It may be worth contacting the production
company responsible for the original programme rather than the BBC.
The Proposal
Is it more than just a good idea?
BBC Entertainment receives lots of great ideas but an idea in itself is not enough: its the proposal
that makes an idea feel fresh and new. You will be expected to produce a wellthought out
proposal for your programme.
In this treatment you need to be clear about how the show will be structured. How long is it? Is the
idea strong enough to sustain a 30 or 60 minute show? Does it build to an entertaining climax?
Synopsis
It can be really helpful to open your proposal with a quick synopsis. Most of the best shows on TV
can be summed up in one or two sentences. Try to aim for a synopsis of 40 words or less, the kind
of summary youd read in The Radio Times.
Tip: Use bullet points to outline the main elements/structure of the idea.
For quiz shows please include descriptions for the individual rounds. For example: In round one the
contestants will be asked to
The Pitching and Development section of the BBC College of Production website provides useful
tips for writing a successful proposal.

As soon as your proposal is received it will be passed on to the development team to be read and

proposals for further consideration within six to eight weeks of receipt.
