Proposed Fee Increase

The U.S. Copyright Office plans to increase most fees

effective August 1, 2009. The fees affected include those
for basic registration, document recordation, and searches and
certification of records. Any request received in the U.S. Copyright
Office on or after August 1, 2009, for a service whose fee is scheduled to
increase on that date must be accompanied by the new fee. See pages 2
and 3 of this announcement for a list of Copyright Office fees.
The Technical Amendments Act of 1997 authorized the Register
of Copyrights to increase fees based on a study of the cost
of providing services to the public. For the current fee
adjustments, the Register submitted a cost study to Congress
on March 15, 2009. Because most costs have gone up, most
fees have been scheduled to rise. However, efficiencies
resulting from increased automation of Copyright Office services
permitted some fees to remain the same or even decrease. Adoption
of the proposed new fees will allow the Office to recover a significant
part of the costs to the Office of registering claims and providing other
copyright-related services to the public.
