Design of Machine Elements

This document provides information about an examination for the design of machine elements course, including the exam questions. The first question asks about materials selection criteria for machine parts and preferred numbers, and calculates bolt diameters for different failure theories. The second question discusses stress concentration mitigation and calculates piston rod diameter. The third question involves calculating rivet diameter for a bracket loaded by multiple rivets. The remaining questions concern shaft and pulley design, leaf spring design, journal bearing analysis, connecting rod design, and piston design.

JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY, HYDERABAD
B. Tech III Year I Semester Examinations, November/December-2013
DESIGN OF MACHINE ELEMENTS
(Automobile Engineering)
Time: 3 hours
Max. Marks: 75
Answer any five questions
All questions carry equal marks
--1.a) What are the properties to be considered in selecting the materials in the
design of Machine Parts? Discuss.
b) What are preferred numbers? Mention their advantages.
c) A bolt is subjected to an axial force of 10KN with a transverse shear force of
5 KN. The permissible tensile stress at elastic limit is 100 MPa and the poisons
ratio is 0.3 for the bolt material. Determine the diameter of the bolt required
according to i) Max. principal stress theory ii) Max. shear stress theory iii) Max.
principal strain theory iv) Max. strain energy theory, and Max. distortion energy
theory.

What are the different ways of mitigating stress concentration? Explain with
examples.
The maximum pressure of air in the cylinder of a double acting air compressor of
0.5 m bore is 0.9 M Pa. What should be the diameter of the piston rod if there are
no stress raisers and no column action? Take the factor of safety as 1.75. Infinite
life is desired. Ultimate tensile strength is 1750 M Pa. Take the factor for reversed
axial loading as 0.85, size factor of 0.85 and machine surface finish factor of 0.78.

A bracket is riveted to a column by 6 rivets (A, B, C, D, E and F) of equal size as

shown in Figure. The centres of rivets A,B,C are on the same vertical line and the
centres of D, E, F are on the another vertical line. The centres of A, F are on the
same horizontal line. The centres of B, E are on one horizontal line and the
centres of C, D are on another horizontal line. The vertical distance between A, B
and B, C are 75 mm and 75 mm respectively. The horizontal distance between
C, D is 100 mm. It carries a load of 60 KN at a horizontal distance of 200 mm
from the centre of the column. If the maximum shear stress in the rivet is limited
to 150 MPa, find the diameter of the rivet.

Shaft is supported on two bearings 1800mm apart and rotates at 800 rpm. Two
pulleys B and C are located on the shaft at distance of 600mm and 1350 mm
respectively to the right of the left bearing. The distance of the pulleys B and C
are 750 mm and 600 mm respectively.50kW is supplied to the shaft through
pulley B and output is through pulley C. the drive to pulley B is vertically
downward while from C the drive is downward at the an angle of 600 to the
horizontal. In both cases the tension ratio is 2 and the angle of lap is 1800. The
combined fatigue and shock factors for tensions and bending may be taken.

Working stresses to be 40N/mm2 in shear and 80N/mm2 in tension.

What is a master leaf and how the lengths of various leafs are determined.
A semi- elliptic spring has an overall length of 1.1m and sustains a load of 70kN
at its centre. The spring has 3 extra full length leaves and 13 graduated leaves
with a central band of 100mm wide. All the leaves are to be stressed equally
without exceeding 420 N/mm2when fully loaded .The total depth of spring is
twice the width. If the youngs modulus is 2.1x105N/mm2, determine i) The
thickness and width of leaves. ii) The nip to be provided for prestressing. iii) The
load exerted on the clipping bolts after the spring is assembled.

A journal bearing of 50mm diameter and 80mm long has a bearing pressure of
6 N/mm2. The speed of the journal is 1000 r.p.m. The ratio of journal diameter to
the diametral clearance is 1000.The bearing is lubricated with oil, whose absolute
viscosity at the operating temperature of 750C may be taken as 0.015kg/m-s. The
room temperature is 250C.Determine(i) the amount of artificial cooling required,
and (ii) the mass of the coolant oil required, if the difference between the outlet
and inlet temperatures of the oil is 250C.The specific heat of the oil is
J/kg/0C.Heat dissipation coefficient = 500 W/m2/0C.

The following data refer to a 4-stroke cycle, single cylinder diesel engine
Suction pressure=0.095MPa
Cylinder diameter =200mm
Stroke length=200mm
Ratio of compression=15
Engine speed =7450 rpm
Equivalent mass of reciprocating parts 2N/sq.mm of piston area
Ratio of connecting rod length to crank length is 4
