College of Business Management
Karachi
Dear Sir,
We are pleased to submit this long report on our project Promotion of
Experiential Learning at Institute of Business Management which was done
under the supervision of our course in-charge, Mr Wajdan raza, Senior Lecture,
Communication Department, IoBM.
The main objective of the project was to promote the concepts of Experiential
Learning among the students and faculty members of IoBM. Experiential
Learning ("EL") which means learning by doing or learning through experience is
now being practiced in many schools, colleges and universities throughout the
world to enhance the traditional classroom teaching with interactive applications
of theory and practice.
The Institute of Business Management ("IoBM") has also started a campaign on
EL so that it can be included as a subject in its curriculum. Our projects was a
part of this campaign which was completed by using the business
communication principles i.e. verbal and non- verbal communications. We used
several communication channels including website through facebook, banners,
brochures, brief lectures in class room, persuasive letters, emails, direct verbal
communication with students and senior faculty to promote the concepts of EL.
This project itself was an experiential learning for all of us where we learned
team management, communication skills, writing skills, development of ideas
ii
through brain storming and discussion. We also learned how to deal with
different kinds of people, face the challenges and failures and most importantly
it was an educational experience for all of us because we came to know the
concept of EL which was not known to us before.
This report highlights the basic concepts of EL, the methodology we used to
promote it, analysis of the benefits and outcomes of the project and our
experiences during the whole activity of promotion of EL. The campaign went
very well with a very good response from the students and teaching faculty. Over
140 faculty members and 1300 students were approached while over 2000
brochures were distributed. Around 162 students posted more than 500
comments, 18 videos were downloaded, 211 pictures were uploaded.
At the end we would like to thank you Sir for your time, suggestions and valuable
comments. We want to express our sincerest gratitude to our course in-charge
for all his efforts he has taken during this campaign. We are also grateful to our
Rector and other respected faculty members. Thanks to our whole class as
without their support we could not complete this project. We would like to
thank all the students and employees of IoBM for their support and also our
friends and colleagues outside the IoBM who joined the campaign of Experiential
Learning through Facebook.
Thanking you,
Yours Sincerely,

Executive Summary
Experiential learning means learning by doing or learning from experiences.
There are several approaches such as experiential education activities,
presentations, internships, seminars that can help the students to evaluate their
experiential learning potential. It allows students to contact with the
environment, and gives exposure to processes that are extremely unpredictable
and uncertain. Keeping in view the above importance of experiential learning,
IoBM organized an experiential education campaign to provide students and
faculty members a valuable learning experience for their professional growth
and development.
A group of eight Business Communication students belonging to different professions
was selected on the basis of experiences in their relevant fields to promote experiential
learning at IoBM among the students and teaching faculty. Under the guidance of
course in-charge the group used various business communication skills in terms of
verbal and non verbal communication. Students created Facebook page to share their
concepts about EL, made banners, posters and brochure to create awareness. On final
day games were organized to test the knowledge of students about EL.
The campaign went very well with a very good response from the students and teaching
faculty. Over 140 faculty members and 1300 students were approached while over 2000
brochures were distributed. Around 162 students posted more than 500 comments, 18
videos were downloaded, 211 pictures were uploaded. The senior faculty members
including Dean and Rector of IoBM highly appreciated the efforts of first year students.
Students also learnt about EL through this promotional campaign.
The students and teachers took keen interest in EL campaign which clearly shows that
they are keen to introduce the concept of EL in their traditional way of learning. Such
campaign should be continued on regular basis and EL should be included as the
management course.
Introduction
Experiential Learning
Experiential learning (EL) means learning by doing, through our actions and
experiences. It is also learned by discovery or exploring something on our own. It
is a purposeful process of engaged and active learning to constructs knowledge,
skills, or values by means of direct experiences in authentic, real world contexts
(Association for Experiential Education, 2007)
Learning through experience is not a new concept for the classroom learning.
Notable educational psychologists such as John Dewey, Carl Rogers and David
Kolb have provided the groundwork of learning theories that focus in learning
by doing. Dewey popularized the concept of experiential education which
focuses on problem solving and critical thinking rather than memorization and
rote learning. Rogers considered experiential learning significant as compared
to what he called meaningless cognitive learning (Experiential Learning).
There are various saying on experiential learning which are helpful to understand
why EL is an effective process of learning.
I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand
Confucius, 450 BC
Tell me and I Forget, Teach me and I remember, Involve me and I will
learn Benjamin Franklin, 1750
There is an intimate and necessary relation between the process of
actual experience and education John Dewey, 1938
Kolb's learning styles can be seen in terms of a two-by-two matrix (Figure 1).
Diverging (feeling and watching - CE/RO) These type of learners prefer
to feel and watch the things from different perspective rather than doing.
These types of people generate ideas, do brainstorming, like to gather
information and tend to be imaginative and emotional. They prefer to
work in groups and listen with an open mind and welcome the feedback.
Assimilating (watching and thinking - AC/RO) They are called the
thinkers with a concise and logical approach. People with an Assimilating
learning style are less focused on people and more interested in ideas
and abstract concepts. They prefer readings, exploring the new ideas,
analyze the models, and having time to think things through.
Converging (doing and thinking - AC/AE) In converging learning style,
people use their learning to find solutions to practical issues. They prefer
technical tasks, and are less concerned with people and interpersonal
aspects. They prefer to do experiment with new ideas and theories.
Accommodating (doing and feeling - CE/AE) They rely on 'hands-on'
experiment and also use other's analysis to take a practical, experiential
approach rather than carry out their own analysis. This learning style is
prevalent and useful in roles requiring action and initiative. They prefer
to work in teams and set targets to achieve an objective (Kolb, 1984).
carried out, how themes, problems and issues emerged as a result of the
experience.
Generalizing So What?: Students connect the experience with real
world examples, find trends or common truths in the experience, and
identify real life principles that emerged.
Application Now What?: Students apply what they learned in the
experience to a similar or different situation and discuss how the newly
learned process can be applied. They also discuss how issues raised can
be useful in future situations and how more effective behaviors can
develop from what they learned.
This approach provided the students a platform for learning, to increase their
knowledge, add and develop workplace skills, to have professional interactions,
develop the ability to take risks which in turn will foster confidence in them to
participate and communicate effectively and efficiently with the creative and
business world.
The EL project also encouraged the students to build on the theoretical
knowledge which in future will eventually reflect in them when they take on
challenges in the professional world.
Objectives
The purpose of the project Promoting Experiential Learning at Institute of
Business Management was
To introduce basic concepts of Experiential Learning to the students of
IoBM.
To motivate students to change their learning behaviors with the help of
informative sessions, awareness workshops, audio-visual and activity
based learning.
To change the learning dimensions and to eradicate the conventional
methods of teaching as well as learning.
To encourage the students to engage and apply academic understandings
through hands-on experience, while simultaneously learning new
information about the world around them.
To give confidence to the students through this practical approach of
learning in their own abilities, discover innovative ways to overcome
obstacles and turn a class project into a life experience.
The main emphasis of the project apart from EL promotion was the use of
business communication (the main subject) in all aspects of organizing
this project.

the final game and coordinated with participants while MF was responsible for
budgeting and financial functions. Entering the final phases, aiming to achieve
the main purpose of the project, i.e. to highlight and create an awareness of the
concept of experiential learning, AG, AS and MK prepared a 5-minute lecture to
deliver in various classes at IoBM to reach the students directly and invite them
to understand and embrace the concept of EL (Figure 5).
SY made the final report of EL project. AG took the lead taking the team through
highs and the lows, planning and coordinating the activities as well as
communicating with the faculty members.

The Dean, Dr. Irfan Hyder has been very generous to allow the group to meet
him in person and all group members improved under his supervision, as he took
keen interest in the project and guided through with the presentations and
facilitated in coordinating with other senior faculty members. He also wrote a
testimonial for the project.
The project took on a whole new level when the rector, Mr Talib Karim got on
board. The support and encouragement received from him was remarkable. He
also wrote a testimonial for the brochure was very prompt in releasing the
budget for the project.
Other faculty members were also very responsive and enthusiastically joined the
journey of EL and enlightened the students on understanding the core concepts
of EL through Facebook page as well as by facilitating the group members in
giving class presentations and writing great testimonials.

Reflection
The whole process of learning through experience gave the group members a
practical insight to improve and implement our skills of planning, organizing and
leading the task at hand and enhance the teamwork skills. They started off by
33
brainstorming the organizations to carry out our project in but due to limited
accessibility, they learnt to face rejections. They also learnt how to work as a
team and take along the members from different backgrounds to bring out the
best in them to achieve a common goal. This venture helped to strengthen the
communication skills by carrying out discussions and actively participating in
project proceedings. Furthermore, the project has very important long term
implications, because whatever the group of movers and shakers learn from
this experience will be implemented at their workplaces and used to avoid
repeating the past mistakes. The project will also help to improve their approach
towards problem identification and come up with possible solutions and give
their confidence a great boost and empower them to reach out to people to
make their point.
Challenges
Two months passes by and the journey wasnt easy. We faced challenges in
terms of communication, lack of coordination between the groups and time
limitations due to the holy month of Ramadan. Before the final round, when we
were at the last stage of our campaign the rain stuck us and we missed the last
moment pace. Unfortunately the attendance of the students was also low due to
rain. Initially there was lack of participation, the members were unaware of the
34
subject. Time management was a great challenge because all of the members
were doing job and it was difficult to take out some time when everyone was
made available. There were deadlines to be met and tasks to be accomplished.
But with a promising team under guidance of the supportive faculty members,
we succeeded in introducing EL at IoBM.
Evaluation Criteria
In order to assess the effective outcomes, feedback can be taken from the
students, senior management and teachers of IoBM to determine any positive
effect of this project on their teaching methodologies and on learning behaviors
of the students. And, if found to have lasting positive impact we would like to
create a society for Experiential Learners so that it will continue to progress and
touch heights in changing learning strategies.
35
Conclusion
The basic aim of Experiential Learning is to empower individuals capacity
to learn and grow more professionally.
Experiential learning allows us to understand that to be remembered
over a long period of time.
It provides guidance for applications to helping people improve their
learning in education and development.
It helps us to understand learning and flexibility at a deeper and yet more
comprehensive level.
Experiential learning project helps to create awareness and provide
guidance of how they can improve and implement such learning
techniques in their professional lives to obtain a satisfactory outcome
ensuring progress in their field.
It goes beyond knowledge and into skill by generating a learning
experience - the more experience the greater the skill.
Experiential learning teaches us that people learn best from their own
experiences and their own reviews (Arora).
36
Recommendations
Since this report presents evidence to suggest that both students and instructors
have a strong interest in experiential education, we would therefore like to make
the following recommendations/suggestions in order to foster the development
and implementation of experiential learning in response to the event that has
been conducted at IoBM to promote Experiential Learning (Hoover, 1975;
Experiential Learning Report; Clark 2010) .
EL should be implicated practically as a part of curriculum and used as a
learning methodology all over IoBM.
Teacher education programs, particularly in experiential education
should begin to include instructions on the entire process of experiential
learning not just the importance of hands on concrete experience.
Students should be encouraged to carry on experimenting on a small
scale, initially developing an experiential learning activity .We suggest
beginning small, and letting success build on success just like we did in
the EL promotion campaign.
Use lectures for content and tutorials for the purpose of promoting EL
within the institution should be further widespread to a greater extent.

workshops, audio-visual and activity based learning. If needed, motivational
speakers will be invited to enhance the overall impact. After the students are
well-versed with the concept of EL, it will be implicated practically as a part of
curriculum and used as a learning methodology all over IoBM. The ultimate goal
is to change the learning dimensions and to eradicate the conventional methods
of teaching as well as learning. IoBM is also committed to these constructive
changes in higher education of Pakistan. Finally, feedback from the students will
be taken and if found effective, we will spread the word out through social media
and let other people get to know about it.
This project is meaningful for the entire team in terms of learning, project
management and most importantly how to work as a team. Every individual will
be utilized for their own unique potential, creativity and critical thinking to bring
out the best in each member to achieve the goal successfully. Funding in the
amount of Rs 155,500 is requested for promotional materials and hospitality
suites. This project will be a challenge for all of us and is itself an experience of
experiential learning.
6. Reflection
How will you actively reflect on your learning throughout and following the
experience?

Dear Dr Hyder,
RE: Promoting Experiential Learning at Institute of Business Administration
We, the students of MBA-MHM are pleased to present this proposal for your review.
Our group has been working on this project from last few weeks and now we are able to
communicate the whole project with you. This project is about promoting Experiential
Learning with in IoBM. First of all, the main objective of this project is to introduce
Experiential Learning all over IoBM and persuade students to change their learning
practices through open day forums, awareness sessions and workshops.
The main focus of Project EL is to change learning methodology by making Experiential
Learning as a part of our curriculum. Later on, we would like to publicize the project
through social media and finally after the successful completion of the project we will
approach Higher Education Commission of Pakistan to anchor this transformation in
learning all over the Country.
In order to assure effective execution of this project, our proposal requests PKR 155500
in funding so that promotional items and audio-visual aid can be arranged to carry out
the promotional activities throughout IoBM.
We would highly appreciate that if higher authorities of IoBM take an interest to make
Experiential Learning as a new dimension of learning around IoBM and approve our
proposal for the execution of the project.
Thank You,
Team Project EL

Did you read the cover letter, you wrote!!!! Read the subject line again!
Where are you promoting experiential learning at IBA or IoBM?
First lesson in communication. Don't ever send out an important letter unless
you have proof read it. The only way to proof read an important letter in a "foolproof" manner is to print it out!!!!.
See the importance of experiential learning!

Dear Anas
I really appreciate your efforts and coordination for creating a platform for a real
purpose-based communication (Experience 1: happiness).
The Dean is the real spirit behind this change through experiential learning (EL).
Down the track the whole team of EL will find him one the most motivating
leaders for the change inculcated in me by Dr Sb. You will observe him in me in
many interactions of mine with you in future (Experience 2: possibility of further
experiences).
On Dr Sb's damage-control feedback, writing is permanent thus needs many eyes
for a finer editing (Experience 3: critical realism). I know mistakes are natural but
we may reduce them with our understanding of Business Communication
(Experience 4: there is always a room for improvement) .
51
Please show me each part of writing of the proposal before you send it to the
highest management of Institute of Business Management (Experience 5:
collective wisdom).
Dr Sb, Lesson 1 is learned. Thanks for the feedback.
Regards
Wajdan

Dear Dr. Hyder,
Firstly, i want to humbly apologize for the mistake i made while writing the name
of our Institution in the subject of the cover letter, a person should learn from
his mistakes and i assure you that i have learnt a valuable lesson from this, thank
you so much for your feedback.
Secondly, we would be honored to meet you tomorrow at 9 15 am, three
people, including myself, would be representing our group and i am hopeful that
this meeting would have positive outcomes.
I again want to thank you for your support and feedback.

Congratulations for being the torch bearers of Experiential Learning (EL) at IoBM.
EL is simple: put your Higher Order Thinking in place, analyse, synthesize, and
evaluate your experience and share it for healthy criticism. Implement EL and
the oyster is your world. Best of luck!
Hope this is okay

Lecture based teaching and preparing for the exams makes us forget most that
we memorize. Experiential Learning (EL) links experience of real-life, reflection
and trial-and-error and makes learning fun, long term and life-long. Just think of
learning to swim or learning to drive. No amount of classroom lecturing by an
Olympic gold-medalist or a Formula-1 winner is of any help. You can't learn
unless you jump into the water or sit behind the wheel and press the
accelarator. Also known as "learning by doing", Experiential Learning enables
you to take charge of your learning and to boldly go where no one has gone
before!

Subject: Dissemination of Experiential Learning Initiative
Dear Faculty:
We are in the process of implementing experiential learning which is a goal set
by higher management of IoBM. Students of Business Communication course
have been assigned with a project to disseminate information about
"Experiential Learning" to the students of IoBM. In this process they would get
experiential learning of how strategy directions get communicated to
employees/stakeholders of a company. In this connection, the group would
require 5-10minutes of your class time to explain experiential learning to your
students.
Looking forward to your cooperation and facilitation.
Dr Irfan Hyder

Dear Dr. Irfan,
The Business Communications students group would be welcome to my
Integrated Marketing Communication class (30 students), on any Saturdayfor 1015 minutes. As the class runs from 8:00-10:15 during Ramazan, it would be best
if they came at 10:00am sharp. Samra Javaid could perhaps help confirm the
date.
Best regards!
