BACKGROUND:
Starting in December 2006, B-Shirt Foundation established a one year professional program in
English and computer, with the aim of creating computer professionals who could supply the
needs of local business or start their own business. The students were selected from all around
Bekasi, with priority given to bright students with poverty-level family backgrounds. All
scholarship students are carefully screened prior to selection.
As a pay forward, scholarship students are required to perform community service as part of their
graduation requirements. They have gone into rural elementary schools and shared IT and
English expertise not only with students, but teachers as well, in B-Shirt's EduCare out reach
program.
PROJECT PURPOSE/GOAL:
EduCare is a student and volunteer pay forward program established in 2006 by B-Shirt
Foundation to reach out to small rural villages in Bekasi. On Sunday mornings our volunteers,
drawn from our own sponsored student body and trainee teachers, provide remote village
children with English language and leadership training in an innovative and playful format.
EXPECTED RESULTS:
Young children throughout rural areas in Bekasi who are normally constrained by large
classes and in adequate teacher interaction receive a chance to open their minds, expand their
horizons and learn practical applications of community values to maximize their potential
and change their environment.
Local village teachers participate and learn, developing new facilitating kills to open the
children's minds.
Volunteer trainee teachers from teaching universities in Bekasi experience first-hand village
school education and develop values based on interaction with the children.
B-Shirt Foundation scholarship students pay forward their scholarship and gain valuable
experience for future career.
