A two-sided (duplex) folding brochure

Programs(s)/Tools
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Photoshop
Canon Rebel XT camera

Objectives

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.

Create an original new logo to use in a brochure.
Learn how to wrap text around an image.
Use paragraph styles in InDesign.
Incorporate quality images.

Process

The image of the box of chocolates was captured with the

Canon Rebel XT camera. I made edits to it in Photoshop
and placed it in my Indesign file. I edited the small image
of chocolates in Photoshop to allow the words to wrap
around it once it was placed in Indesign. The image
of the bow was downloaded from the Internet and I
created the ribbons to go with it in Illustrator. The red
candy bullets for the list and the logo were also created
using Illustrator and placed in the design. I used the
paragraph styles in InDesign to ensure uniformity
throughout the brochure. I used a bone folder to make
a crease before folding the brochure.

Program(s)/Tools
Adobe Photoshop

W3C Validation Service

Objectives

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png.

Write content to describe the process of creating the logo.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and CSS.
Identify hex colors to match logo.

Process

Using Photoshop, I formatted a logo from an earlier

project for use on the web so the logo could be placed
without a background. I created the striped background
as an image 20px wide and 300px high. The colors were
selected using the eyedropper tool to match the logo, and
the opacity was reduced to soften the background.
Using provided basic demo HTML and CSS files to
establish basic parameters, I followed the requirements
of changing the text color, font families, list items, and
headers. Background colors and colors throughout
were made to match the logo using the Photoshop
eyedropper tool and identifying the hex color number.
To complete the project, the HTML and CSS files
were checked for errors using the W3C Validation
Service, and then a screenshot of the web page was
taken and copied onto a Photoshop image for display
and printing purposes.

Objectives

Learn basic photography skills.

Use a digital camera to take a quality image.
Choose color scheme and incorporate colors into the layout.
Use non-destructive editing by adjusting image levels,
saturation, color balance, and sharpen.
Size, crop, and place image on page layout.
Use layers to design text in Photoshop.
Print with full-bleed margins.

Process

I chose an analogous color scheme and set out looking

for some image to capture. I settled on the warm colors
that we typically associate with autumn. I used a
Canon Rebel XT camera to take the photo. I arranged
the setting for the image and had to add some extra
lighting since it was indoors. In Photoshop I edited the
image using some basic skills to adjust the light levels,
vibrancy, saturation, colors, and sharpened it.

Microsoft Word

Objectives

Comprehend image sizing, including pixels and dots per inch.

Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design using Microsoft Word only.

Process

I started this project by considering what type of ad I would

like to create and looked through several magazines to
see which images would work with my ideas. I scanned
in the images and then the real work began. I sketched
a few different layouts and went with the one that I
thought would work best. For this project we were not
allowed to make edits with any software other than
Microsoft Word, which posed a real challenge for the
image style that I wanted to use in the layout. Even
though Microsoft Word can remove backgrounds
from images, the white flaps on the box in this image
would be included in the items removed. Instead of
removing the background, I covered it up by inserting
black lines, crescents, triangles, and rectangles while
zooming in at 200 to 300 percent to allow precise
alignments. I temporarily inserted contrasting lines
onto the document to serve as guides to align the
different elements in the design.

Adobe Illustrator

Objectives

Use basic tools in Illustrator and InDesign.

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks.

Process

I started this project by sketching the logo with paper and

pencil. I scanned the sketch and then placed it in and
Adobe Illustrator file. I locked the image to the artboard
so that I could trace the image using the pen tool. I
refined the logo by using the curvature tool and the shape
builder tool.
The replica of the real Sputnik satellite that is used as
the logos hat ornament was created using the following
Adobe tools: ellipse, line, and star. I made full circles
to create the signal emblem above the satellite, and
then used the star tool to make a triangle for a mask to
eliminate 3/4 of the rings.
For the background I added a paper texture of
a burlap potato sack and a layer of brown with
reducing the opacity on both. I also added a
watermark of an enlarge copy of the logo.

Objectives

Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow.
Unify a layout with a consistent theme and spiritual message.
Blend two or more images together gradually, using masks.
Demonstrate advanced Photoshop skills.
Use mask to apply filter to one part of image.

Process

I selected a spiritual theme based on faith and selected

images that have a strong sense of symbolism to faith. I
lassoed the images of the flower and fingers, and then
placed them on top of the image of enlarged mustard
seeds. I used masking tools to blend out the edges of
the smaller images so that they would bleed into the
background image.

Process

provided to me and my job was to create a flier for the event.
I started this project by sketching a few different ideas.
Once I settled on the design I created a digital version using

needed to be precise in designing, especially in alignment
of the different elements.
