Relay For Life committee
are reaching out to the community with an urgent need
for participants and volunteers for the annual Relay
For Life fundraiser benefiting the Canadian Cancer
Society. With participant
numbers in the decline
from a high of 295 in 2010
to 81 last year, and with the
cost of raising a dollar of
paramount importance in
any fundraising event, the
society needs to take a good
look at the viability of some
of our smaller events.
This is a critical fundraising event for our community and to help fight
cancer, said Kelly McCreight. Money raised at
the relay supports cancer
patients in this community, giving them access to
transportation and lodging assistance, financial
and emotional support
programs, as well as information services. We also
fund Camp Goodtimes,
where children who have
experienced cancer can
spend a fun, action packed
week with peers.

World Female Hockey Festival
The WK Bantam Wildcats won the Tier 1 Division in
the Haley Wickenheiser World Hockey Festival held in
Calgary November 28 to 30. The team played four round
robin games against Prince George, Edmonton and Sherwood Park. The girls rolled through the round robin with
two wins, one loss and a forfeit tie due to PG being stranded in Edmonton by weather.

Relay For Life is an inspirational, non-competitive, 12
hour fundraising event that brings a community together to celebrate life and fight cancer. Each year a dedicated
team of volunteers has helped the Canadian Cancer Society staff put on a fantastic relay in Castlegar, the overnight
event a true presentation that cancer never sleeps.
The committee is reaching out and asking the community to register for Relay For Life 2015 early this year
14 teams (minimum) and 100 participants (minimum)
are needed by March 1 in order for the event to proceed.
The event is slated for June 20, 6 pm to 6 am at Kinnaird
Park. Many people wonder why overnight. Cancer never
sleeps so what better way to honour, remember, support
and fight for all those on their cancer journey. Castlegars
overnight relay is the last of its kind in the Kootenays,
having stayed with the original relay format. !

The Slocan Lake Gallery Society invites the public to

attend their Fourth Annual Family Hanukkah Event at
the Silverton Memorial Hall on Saturday, December 13.
Doors open at 5:30 pm, and the program gets underway at
6. This year it is a potluck feast, so bring a main course, side
or dessert dish to share. Tea and coffee concession on site.
What makes this event exciting for young, old and older
alike? Entertainment, dancing and candle lighting! There
will be storytelling, readings and music at our open mike.
Live music will be provided by members of the Nelson
Hanukkah Ensemble, Catherine McGrath on accordion
and David Feldman on stand-up bass and fiddle. Haya
Maor, a folk dance professional and maven in all things
Hanukkah, will be leading circle dances and group singalong. There will be a non-denominational candle lighting as well. Everyone is welcome.
It is not too late to sign up for open mike. If you have
